Hello 👋
Just that. A straw poll.
It would be interesting to see the lay of the land with this.
See how it goes…

As Callistemon said,

"However, I do have misgivings about Gransnet being used as a platform for Republic's propaganda which is often lifted word for word from their website."

I've long thought that too.

Old news Grany

Grany Tue 18-Apr-23 10:57:33

Republic do not do propaganda unlike the royals who use the BBC as their mouthpiece used abused as a state broadcaster. Republic deals in facts and I like to use them from the horses mouth as it were they say it so much better. So you don't want to know royals have art jewels ect that doesn't belong to them?

FannyCornforth Tue 18-Apr-23 10:56:53

Paddyann, I love a bit of deviation in a thread, but I can’t see the relevance of your above post.
It doesn’t matter though.

But I’m pretty certain that Mollygo isn’t a supporter of the Conservative government

paddyann54 Tue 18-Apr-23 10:53:40

Oh dear Molly of course Starmer would "allow" a holiday ,he's a SIR so he obviously agrees with the monarchy or he'd have refused an Empire title/medal .
THATS one of the reasons many labour or previous labour voters wont vote for him that and his pro israeli stance to the extent palestinian supporting jews were accused of anti semitism and barred from a party they had been members of for decades.
No skin of my nose the pro palestinian jews I know joined the SNP who dont accept honours or think Israel is in any way justified in the treatment of the Palestinian people .Aparty that sees being anti Israeli government is NOT anti semitic .
Of course SNP is a mess....according to media and Gransnet ,unlike your own squeaky clean government...where are the billions given to Tory donors ,relatives and even a friendly pub owner ?

Callistemon21 Tue 18-Apr-23 10:14:29

express not Express
Autocorrect again.

What a strange post Grany. Republic have written What republic?

Republic is an organisation, the sole aim of which is to abolish the monarchy.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion and most of us are thoughtful enough to see the pros and cons of different systems and are able to discuss this and Express our own opinions.
However, I do have misgivings about Gransnet being used as a platform for Republic's propaganda which is often lifted word for word from their website.

Treating official gifts as their own, accepting undeclared gifts from business and the rich, spending untaxed wealth on extravagance. Why do we put up with them?

I wouldn't expect Republicans to give up a bank holiday for the Coronation any more than I would expect any person who wasn't a Christian to refuse a Bank Holiday for Easter or Christmas.

So as I said the last time I would have to break into a couple of schools and work with children and teachers who arent there. This would lead me to being fired and arrested so no I probably wont be working.

🤣🤣🤣
I won’t be working (in school) for the same reason! I might even not work out of school as we are visiting relatives who live in a village where they are having festivities.

I worked in a profession where we didn't get bank holidays anyway, and as I'm not working now, it won't make any difference to me. I'm sure I'll find something interesting to do...

GagaJo Mon 17-Apr-23 16:32:19

I'll be working on the day. It's no loss.

Will all republicans refuse the day off ?

🤣🤣🤣🤣
I’m still waiting to hear whether republicans think both sides of a case should always receive equal publicity e.g. in the case of the war in Ukraine, and the Russian viewpoint, or is it just where the RF is concerned?
NB This bank holiday is specifically for the Coronation, so maybe if you’re a republican and don’t agree with the coronation, you would want to ignore the benefits as well as the irritations. Or maybe not.
I have written to Keir Starmer asking whether his government would have allowed an extra bank holiday. I don’t expect a reply, but what do you think he would say?

I often had to work on bank holidays no matter who introduced them.

But that would have been due to work pressures, rather than a point of principle.

You think republicans should work on Coronation bank holiday to validate their principles - I was asking if you as a right winger worked on May Day on principle, given at the time of its introduction by Michael Foot it was seen as a very left wing action.

I think all republicans should show their principles by insisting on working and not taking the bank holiday. Unfortunately that would make it difficult for them to demonstrate but you can’t have your cake and eat it grany.

Did you insist on working on May Day bank holiday, introduced by a Labour Government?

Republic have written a letter to BBC about its bias reporting and coverage of royals. The BBC is meant to be a public broadcaster not a state broadcaster. BBC does what the Palace wants and what to show what not to. Republic wants and even coverage showing republican viewpoints as well. Polling shows less people interested in a monarchy with only 15% interested in coronation. Republic want a meeting with the BBC to discuss their views. If not they will report to offcom The Gauardian has picked up this and is the only paper to do in depth investigation into royals one piece recently about the art they were given by Dali that turned up in Philips collection amongst other things the royals have kept for themselves.

Grany, the 15% was people who wanted both Harry and Meghan to be present.
Here’s the poll.

I’m looking forward to the ‘show’. Probably once in a lifetime for us older members. I couldn’t give a toss about the royal family though I think Charles and Cam are as good as any, probably better than most if you have to have one.

What a strange post Grany. Republic have written What republic?

What exactly do you have in mind? Do you want publicity of all Republican demonstrations that will be going on, on the day of the Coronation, enabled by the republican workers taking advantage of the extra bank holiday to have a day off, so they can demonstrate?

That’s like saying that all the information about the damage and suffering caused by the war in Ukraine should be accompanied by publicity of all the pro-war Russian opinions.
Or maybe that’s what you think should happen about that war. Who knows?

Republicans should be given as much publicity as the RF. I’m fine with that.
I see so little news of the RF except on special occasions that I’d happily see the same amount of information about the Republicans.
But wanting to use world-wide viewing of an event for their own publicity is a bit dog-in-the-manger and wouldn’t enhance the appearance of republicans.
