Is this the best outcome?

maddyone Thu 13-Apr-23 11:48:08

The royals are an ordinary family. The idea of royalty is outdated in my opinion. In days of old it was just about power grabbing but it’s not any longer. I don’t really know what it’s about any longer, I can’t see the point of it. But I recognise that if there was a referendum the majority would probably stick with what we’ve got.
Harry and Meghan wanting titles for their children in America is one example of how daft it all is.
I’ll watch the coronation because I quite like all the pomp and ceremony but I recognise it’s all ridiculous and has no meaning relevant to everyday life.

VioletSky Thu 13-Apr-23 11:45:21

I don't know where I got that notion that they were all meant to be examples for us all

Galaxy Thu 13-Apr-23 11:43:06

Often there are a number of contributors to an incident, theres a word for it? so you had drunk chauffeur, media chase, seat belts etc. If you remove any one of those things might have been different.

Billybob4491 Thu 13-Apr-23 11:41:27

I never thought they were VioletSky

VioletSky Thu 13-Apr-23 11:39:01

I actually did like Diana and remember the whole situation as being the first time I felt disillusioned by the royal family and thinking, they are just ordinary daft people and not an example to aspire too

Anniebach Thu 13-Apr-23 11:36:48

Why leave the Ritz ?

Glorianny Thu 13-Apr-23 11:33:00

If we carry the "what could have happened" scenario to its next step.
If the paps hadn't been surrounding the hotel and following Diana, she and Dodi could have driven slowly and safely back to their flat or stayed in the Ritz. It wouldn't have mattered which they did.
So we get back to Harry's view it was the paps.

DamaskRose Thu 13-Apr-23 11:29:56

I thought the reason Meghan and children weren’t coming was because they thought it would be too much of a security risk? Didn’t Harry complain that they weren’t given a high enough level of security?
I just hope his coming means a lot to his father and might help heal the rift. Probably being naive …

Calendargirl Thu 13-Apr-23 11:23:42

Diana and Dodi could have stayed overnight at the Ritz, they didn’t have to race off as they did. They would hardly have needed to worry about paying the bill.

Then the paps following them, the drunk driver, the no seat belts….none of that would have come about.

And the whole course of Royal history might have been different, who knows?

🤷‍♀️

LondonMzFitz I hope people remember his Mum who was - quite literally - driven to her death while chased by media.

But... but... The Ritz chauffeur didn't need to take on a race with the paps. He could have driven normally and not tried to out-run them. Dodi and Diana could have then left the car at their destination holding something over their faces so as not to be photographed.

They could have had a sober chauffeur.

They could all have worn seat belts.

It didn't have to end that way. Diana's UK bodyguard, Ken Wharfe, has said that there's no way he would have allowed her to leave the Ritz in the way that she did. Unfortunately he was no longer looking after her.

Anyone here believe that Princess Diana knew the driver was drunk? That she would have knowingly got into a car driven by a drunk? That somehow it's her fault she's dead, dying at the side of a road being photographed, flashes of camera's as she was being treated with Dodi dead beside her?

Literally driven to her death while chased by media. You simply cannot dispute any of this.

Anyone who's support of a monarchy depends on who is in the top job is is really a Republican.

They just don't know it yet.

VioletSky Thu 13-Apr-23 11:01:46

That would actually be a bit sad, I'm not a royalist but you know, you kinda get used to having a king/queen about the place

Jaberwok Thu 13-Apr-23 11:00:25

Any chance of Harry acceding to the throne and I too would become a republican over night. As for the plane crash comment, I read that as well, be it all ages ago. Him coming on his own is probably the best outcome here, but how deeply sad that it has come to this. Hasn't Harry got a court case pending on May 8th? I could have got this wrong of course, if so he will, I imagine stay here until that hearing is over?

maddyone Thu 13-Apr-23 10:56:49

I care timetogo. I’d prefer we had a republic.

Regarding photographs of the Royal children, I don't think that the Cambridges can be happy when the press gleefully print pictures of Louis pulling faces so that he can be labelled as the cheeky one.

THis is probably correct. Prince William and Catherine don’t really have too much of a choice in that their children are next in line after William and there will always be public interest in them as long as we have a monarchy. William and Catherine have tried to limit the amount of exposure by carefully planned releases such as birthday photos and first day of school photos, but at the same time gradually involving their children in public life where appropriate eg the Queen’s funeral and the Coronation. I think they’ve done their best under the circumstances.

Where did she say that? I've not heard that before

There's been plenty about it online for several years.

I think if H&M ever did come to the throne, we would very quickly indeed become a republic.

Galaxy Thu 13-Apr-23 10:51:45

Lots of people were really cross that they didnt see Harry's baby when they were born, or only saw their foot or something, I cant remember the details it was so weird.

maddyone Thu 13-Apr-23 10:49:49

Some celebrities successfully keep their children out of the press and those children are able to get normal jobs and move freely.

Yes, some celebrities do and good on them. Others court the press and I wouldn’t think that good for the children. However Harry and Meghan have kept their children out of the press to a large extent, but so has Princess Beatrice, but not Eugenie who has released pictures of her little boy. It’s up to them, no one’s saying that the public should see Harry’s children. It’s strange that they’ve given them the titles Prince and Princess though as that inevitably will draw attention to them as they grow up. Many of the royal family have normal jobs but Harry and Meghan don’t want a normal job. That’s evident from the fact that they’ve decided to use their royal connections vis Netflix to make money.

Forsythia Thu 13-Apr-23 10:47:29

I don’t believe the media chased Diana to her death. Harry believes that because it suits him to further his agenda. Diana had a chauffeur who shouldn’t have been behind the wheel of a car. Diana also used to court the media, like Meghan and Harry, and tip them off when she wanted them to photograph her.

Galaxy Thu 13-Apr-23 10:47:28

It's fairly unlikely isnt it.

Anniebach Thu 13-Apr-23 10:47:08

Diana and Dodi chose to leave the Ritz in full knowledge of the
Paparazzi waiting ,

What would happen if circumstance meant Harry ended up King?

I’d become a republican overnight.
