American court would not allow Fox News to use "freedom of speech laws" to justify knowing they lied

Someone at a disciplinary hearing said that if enough people believed something it was a fact. Fortunately the panel didn’t agree. Since then I have come across so many who think the same. It’s a worrying trend.

Gawd, it's like a Tinkerbell argument, isn't it?

Come on children, if you all shout out that you believe in fairies Tinkerbell won't die....

No, your truth is your truth
Mine is mine
For a believer, God exists
For an atheist, God doesn't exist

Beliefs aren't truths. Until either of these positions can be demonstrated to be true by undeniable evidence they remain merely opinions bolstered by belief.

You can dress it up whatever way you like but it is a fact that Trump did not win the 2020 presidential election . It is a fact that voting machines were not tampered with to deny him victory and it is a fact that Fox News lied to retain his supporters as viewers.

Big Brother would love Fox News. The post-truth era is like '1984'.

Trumpers call CNN fake news and love fox

Watching fox is like living in an alternative dimension full of conspiracies and gaslighting

this is how polarized the US is right now, sadly

No, your truth is your truth
Mine is mine
For a believer, God exists
For an atheist, God doesn't exist

The issue is when we want to impose our opinions and way of living in others

Somebody's truth is someone else's lies

Do you think that is clever? It is certainly not true.

If you set out to deceive by lying it is your lie as much as a lie that I hear. Are you suggesting that if I say you a a thief that make it true because it is my truth? Madness!

I saw it reported on twitter yesterday that Fox does not have to make any acknowledgement of this settlement on air. So it is more than likely that most of its viewers will be unaware both of the lawsuit and Fox's admission of guilt implied in the settlement. So it's effectively a win for Fox.

How do you work that one out? hmm

Fox obviously made an offer that couldn’t be refused - as they could well afford. I hope Smartmatic aren’t so easily bought. It would do some Americans, who hang on the every word of Fox et al, good to have their eyes opened. Not just Americans either.

I think it all comes down to cost GSM as I know you will be aware. Like you though, I wish it would be out in the open. Perhaps they need a "Just Fund Me" page for their costs. They would be welcome to a donation from me but it's really and American problem, I suppose.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 19-Apr-23 08:59:59

I was sorry that Fox achieved a settlement. I hope Smartmatic go to trial.

So is the statement Biased Bullshit Corporation a fact?

It is, in fact, a fact.

Fox has not been allowed to claim the First Amendment.

👀 highest journalistic values - they even lied in this statement!

Murdoch and others knew that the "steal" claims were bogus but didn't prevent their hosts from implying the opposite, and allowed them to repeat the lie.

So they tried to invoke the First Amendment, as justification. angry

Getting back to the subject. I was selfishly sorry that Dominion accepted the $787.5m (£633m) settlement. I would like to have seen Fox's methods explained in court. However, they are a business and had to do the best they could for that business.

Sky commented: it has cost Murdoch a great deal to stop the humiliation of a five to six-week trial would never have been remotely in his or his company's interest.. I think it would have been in the interest of truth, however. The settlement still needs the approval of Judge Eric Davis.

One of Dominion's lawyers, Justin Nelson, said outside the court: The truth matters, lies have consequences. Over two years ago, a torrent of lies swept Dominion and election officials across America into an alternative universe of conspiracy theories causing grievous harm to Dominion and the country

Today's settlement represents vindication and accountability.

We must share a commitment to facts.

Misinformation will not go away, it may only get worse.

This litigation cannot solve all problems, all of us remain ever vigilant to find common factual ground.

Today represents a ringing endorsement for truth and for democracy.

Another US voting technology company, Smartmatic, is pursuing its defamation lawsuit seeking $2.7bn (£2.2bn) in damages from Fox in a New York state court.

So is the statement Biased Bullshit Corporation a fact?

It doesn't take long does it. This post does not quote any statement so how can we know what the puerile, opinionated name calling refers to?

I see that Fox has settled.

Shame - I was hoping to see Murdoch give evidence about his support of Trump’s mendacity.

Someone once claimed on GN that their opinion was as valid as any facts.

If that's the case, then we're sunk!

Everyone's entitled to an opinion, but I believe a fact is immutable.

Being somewhat opinionated myself, I sometimes just have to acknowledge that an inconvenient fact has proved my opinion worthless.

It's not easy!

Happens all the time here ,there is rarely anything accurate or true about Scottish politics in any of the media, newspapers or Broadcast media. Its what we expect because media is run by the right wing who are ardent unionists.Yes they'll shout about Independence for ANY country like Ukraine or celebrate the Independence of Pakistan but Scottish Independence is a swearword .
Take note of the feeding frenzy around the so called MESS the SNP is in..all the while the Westminster government is let off the hook for REAL not imagined misdeeds .Sadly there are still native Scots who believe Westminster regardless of the nonsense that comes from them ,its 300 years of conditioning by telling us we're incapable of self rule .
Independence is NORMAL ...though not according to the Biased Bullshit Corporation !!

I do hope this this starts to make an impact both America and here.

Freedom of speech should not allow the knowing telling of lies and yet how often do we get the "right to my opinion" quoted here when people put forward "facts" which have shown to be untrue.
