I have just seen this on twitter and it is quite the strangest thing I've seen for a long while.

As one commenter said, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry..

It did irresistibly remind me of a Beyond the Fringe sketch from the 60s which discussed Britain's latest missile which 'depended on a team of highly trained cyclists to carry it into battle'...

(Not sure if it really belongs on N & P but some people might enjoy appreciate it...)

This was inevitable. Sunak’s police, Benny Hill style

They need to book Dixon of Dock Green to give them some tips.

Hilarious!!!!

They bring to mind those old war films of the Japanese invasion of Singapore.

Am I the only one to find the whole thing sinister. At the end you see the fleet of blacked out Range Rovers who I assume these officers are "protecting". I assume there is someone important in there. Reminded me of FBI/North Korea. Wouldn't those officers be better on the beat than running/cycling in front of those cars ?

Fleur20 Wed 26-Apr-23 12:07:47

Copying the American Presidents cavalcade..
Obviously if its from America we HAVE to copy it..
Just look at police uniforms these days.. they have everything but the kitchen sink attached/hanging from it..
No wonder they can't catch criminals...

It would be funny if it wasn’t so ridiculous, maybe it’s the Mets way of reducing emissions?

Well if it was just to move one man there were an awful lot of cars in the procession, not much reduction in emissions there.

There was a clip following the bicycle one where an elderly man appeared to be assaulted by the police. He was tasered and forced to lie down, kicked hard in the back, handcuffed and by the end he was bleeding from the head where he's been injured. He wasn't resisting, just not wanting to lie face down on the pavement. A more worrying video than the one with the cycling and running officers.

It was supposedly protecting our PM.

'Overkill' is the word that springs to mind.

This is even more sinister.

How judgemental. The fact that an officer has a beard or tattoos doesn't reflect on the person he is ir the job he does. Times have changed

Glorianny Wed 26-Apr-23 14:02:34

I wondered how they decided who got a bike and who had to run. Did they draw lots? Was it first come, first served so the latecomers had to run.?
It makes you wonder why a PM needs such a huge number of officers, even when the IRA was at its most active there wasn't such a huge number involved when the PM moved about.

Maremia Wed 26-Apr-23 14:26:56

Yes Nusgranny, 'North Korea' was the first thing that came into my head. Also, it's that thing about making people look ridiculous, just because you can. Not impressed. Uneasy.

Exactly - and they do have stringent tests they have to pass to get into the police, including a certain level of fitness. You'd be surprised at how exhaustive the background checks are too - or at least they are for Police Scotland.
Oh, and I'm pretty sure those moaning about police with beards or tattoos wouldn't be so quick to complain if they were in any kind of trouble and a tattooed, bearded officer turned up to help them!

Glorianny Wed 26-Apr-23 14:36:30

I suppose all the criminals in London will now be tracking the PMs movements knowing that half the Met will be on bike or foot giving them ample time to commit a crime and escape in a car.

Farzanah Wed 26-Apr-23 15:03:22

I think it was humiliating for the police to have to do this.
Especially sorry for poor old Boris bringing up the rear 😂

HeavenLeigh Wed 26-Apr-23 15:07:45

I saw it the other day on Twitter keystone cops lol

Glorianny Wed 26-Apr-23 15:16:10

Does anyone know why some have hi-viz jackets and some don't? Is there a shortage? Or is it just a fashion choice?

MerylStreep Wed 26-Apr-23 15:29:16

This is assuming that Sunak was actually in one of the vehicles being escorted.
It’s not always the case.

Riverwalk Wed 26-Apr-23 15:47:37

I keep expecting that extraordinary footage to be denounced as a spoof, fake news, manipulated, CGI - just anything but the real thing!

I've seen many a motorcade in London, and everyone has seen in the past year the ariel shots of the various PMs going to the Palace, etc., and the MO is always the same: one outrider goes upfront to halt the traffic, various cars and outriders follow, then there's the slick choreography of the outriders as they take turns to lead - all at great speed.

The idea is to move at a fast pace so the PM, Queen, visiting president etc is not a sitting target, not dawdle so slowly that unfit police officers can puff alongside.

In addition to the joggers there were the many bobbies on bikes - what was going on? And so many officers!

Today it was announced that The Met is 1000 officers short.

I'm at a loss to think what it was all about.

MaizieD Wed 26-Apr-23 15:57:47

Perhaps it was a dead cat.

Or the police decided to make a TikTok...

I don’t think they have standards at all now Norah
They used to have to be no less than a certain height I think it was 5’8. They had to be fit and be able to run a mile in a certain time they had to have good eyesight There’s no way they would be let in te force with bushy beards and tattoos
It was similar to the military, they were looked up to
Now anyone can’t get in they seem to be so desperate they seem to have no pride in their uniform some are over weight, short, and when I saw a policeman with tattoos I believe they have lost feeling of authority

You’re wrong.
Police do have standards tho not a height one.I looked it up and they have regular fitness tests which serving police have to pass.
Is there a profession that bans tattoos? Other than on the face?
A beard, why not?

I believe the police force still won't accept tattoos, my son-in-law was turned down because of his tattoos (and they are not on his face!) I've never seen them anyway!

Saetana Wed 26-Apr-23 18:41:37

It was because of the Extinction Rebellion protest that day.

MerylStreep Wed 26-Apr-23 19:16:35

The Met police policy on tattoos.

I found the commentary slightly worrying. How typical of people in the west country was it to want Liz Truss back?
