I have just seen this on twitter and it is quite the strangest thing I've seen for a long while.

As one commenter said, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry..

It did irresistibly remind me of a Beyond the Fringe sketch from the 60s which discussed Britain's latest missile which 'depended on a team of highly trained cyclists to carry it into battle'...

(Not sure if it really belongs on N & P but some people might enjoy appreciate it...)

Omaoma57 Mon 24-Apr-23 14:03:10

It was amusing especially the commentary!

Oopsadaisy1 Mon 24-Apr-23 14:04:02

It would be funny if it wasn’t so ridiculous, maybe it’s the Mets way of reducing emissions?

paddyann54 Mon 24-Apr-23 14:07:29

Is it a rehearsal for the coronation? Surely if Charlies spending £120 000 000 on it they can afford cars for the police....some of those officers look distinctly unfit, has he made sure they have insurance ?

Smileless2012 Mon 24-Apr-23 14:10:23

I was thinking the same thing about how unfit some of those running looked paddyann.

What on earth is going on?

Foxygloves Mon 24-Apr-23 14:30:01

The Met team for next (or this) year’s Marathon?

The Met team for next (or this) year’s Marathon?

Yes, I believe that's what it is.

Thousands of police officers were working over the weekend to ensure safety of the public and to enable the public to enjoy the Marathons including the children's mini-Marathon, FA cup semi-finals and other football matches in London.
Protests were threatened too, which could have disrupted thousands enjoying these events and the police had to ensure safety of the public as well as that of any protestors.

I'm speechless! 🤣

Redhead56 Mon 24-Apr-23 14:45:11

That’s probably the only exercise the police officers will get since they are never on the beat anymore.

Peraps they're in training for going back on the beat!

Perhaps it's another Haribo advert.

growstuff Mon 24-Apr-23 14:46:42

I think it's a great idea.

I think it's a great idea.

The problem is it's only in TV shows that you see the criminal running away, with a police officer chasing then flooring them in a rugby tackle.
In reality, the criminal will have a car and driver waiting and a police person on a bike won't be able to keep up.

Although, thinking about today's traffic, yes, the police will soon overtake them.

growstuff Mon 24-Apr-23 15:06:45

You don't often see horses galloping after criminals either, but the police still use horses for crown control.

I would imagine that if the cycling police encountered any trouble, they'd be on their phones to back up immediately.

The idea here is to keep the road clear and I must admit that I wouldn't step out in front of a load of cyclists (police or not).

PS. Our town council funds two PCSOs. They have a bicycle each, which enable them to ride around more quickly than walking and they're approachable. They're a great hit!

GrannyGravy13 Mon 24-Apr-23 15:48:13

Police Officers on bikes in congested cities/towns means they can get around a lot quicker.

Better for the environment and setting a good example.

paddyann54 Mon 24-Apr-23 15:55:58

What about the running policeman?

growstuff Mon 24-Apr-23 15:58:31

Oops! Just reread my post. I meant crowd control, not crown control - although maybe it's appropriate for the coronation grin.

AGAA4 Mon 24-Apr-23 16:06:59

Keystone Cops?

BlueBelle Mon 24-Apr-23 16:26:49

Many appear quite out of shape, unfit - I thought standards had to be met?

BlueBelle Mon 24-Apr-23 16:39:32

I don’t think they have standards at all now Norah
They used to have to be no less than a certain height I think it was 5’8. They had to be fit and be able to run a mile in a certain time they had to have good eyesight There’s no way they would be let in te force with bushy beards and tattoos
It was similar to the military, they were looked up to
Now anyone can’t get in they seem to be so desperate they seem to have no pride in their uniform some are over weight, short, and when I saw a policeman with tattoos I believe they have lost feeling of authority

Good cyclists can whizz about at great speeds!

You’re wrong.
Police do have standards tho not a height one.I looked it up and they have regular fitness tests which serving police have to pass.
Is there a profession that bans tattoos? Other than on the face?
A beard, why not?

Wyllow3 Mon 24-Apr-23 18:16:45

I have to confess I'm a regular channel 5Action viewer on police reality shows.

A certain amount of weight needs to be lost for many before they'd catch up......

Hetty58 Mon 24-Apr-23 18:25:28

The fitness 'standards' must be set very low - makes for uncomfortable watching when you wonder if it's a comedy sketch!
