Well I agree with this. Everyone should be issued with an ID card, but when Tony Blair’s government tried to do just that, the outcry could probably have been heard on the moon. Most EU states have ID cards for their citizens, why not Britain?

As for voter fraud yes I personally think in some communities there could be a problem, that's the nature of fraud people are cunning.

Whatever you might think, there is no evidence of voter fraud for in person voting. Laws should be made on evidence, not 'there may be but we don't know'.

A big to do about nothing in my opinion, it lists on the back of the polling cards sent to everyone who is eligible to vote what photo ID is needed. As for voter fraud yes I personally think in some communities there could be a problem, that's the nature of fraud people are cunning.

Can you explain how all people of voter age would verify who they are in order to be given this ID?

For example
In Germany, you are registered at birth with the registry office. If you move, you have to inform the old and new registration office.

From 16 years old on you have to have a “Personalausweis”, an ID card with a photo.

What would we use here?

The question also needs asking as to why has it refused to accept the advice - even from senior Conservatives - who argued that the changes could lead to massive disenfranchisement and disillusionment with the democratic system. Our system is crumbling as it is, this can only make it so much worse.

No one will know if a no show is just the usual non voter, of which there are many, or someone who hasn’t turned up because they didn’t get ID, either because they forgot it because they don’t see why they should.
The only accurate record will be of those who didn’t get/haven’t got ID who turn up to vote.

That is why voter ID should have been given to everyone of voter age.

No one will know if a no show is just the usual non voter, of which there are many, or someone who hasn’t turned up because they didn’t get ID, either because they forgot it because they don’t see why they should.

And, GG13, how did this get into a discussion about the police being given wide and undefined powers to stop people they think might be going to cause chaos somewhere?

I haven’t got the answer I’m afraid, but if a stop and search saves one persons life surely that’s a good thing?

Not at any of the polling stations round here.

There were two outside my polling station - one asked if I has voter ID - I simply looked through him.

I should have reported him, but I got carried away listening to all the objections.

It seems people are not fooled - at least around here they aren’t.

At the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine how did we all feel about protestors being carted off by the Russian police for holding up an anti war sign, or even a blank one, or a flower?

You do know that 'holding up a sign' might well come within the definition of 'intending to cause chaos'?

One useful statistic that could (but won’t) appear would be if there was a comparison between those who voted last time but didn’t vote now because they have no photo ID, maybe classified by age.
