Will You Pledge Allegiance?

Apparently we are all supposed to stand up in front of our tellys and pledge allegiance to the King saying stuff like “ May the King live forever”
Will you me doing it? Me neither, I’ll be in the garden hopefully.
What does “pledge allegiance” even mean in the 21st century? Before royalist pile in, yes I do know it has its roots a few hundred years ago, and it’s taken from a Handel anthem , but , honestly , that’s no excuse is it? We’re not in the Brownies fgs.

Apologies if I have said this but apparently the coronation is costing us tax payers 250 million.
That is shocking given the times we are living in.
Definitely a much pared down royalty is preferable to this obscene waste of money.

Well, you could compare the costs of a presidential election every four years with the cost of first Coronation in 70 years.

🤔 let me think .....

Do you have a breakdown of the £250 million, please?

What would replace the monarchy?

Maybe we could have a genuinely pared-down slim-line monarchy as some other countries do. We pay a decent salary to a king or queen and expenses for royal duties and that's it.

Upkeep of their many properties, estates and art collections would be their responsibility, just like other property owners.

The cost of ceremonials that increase tourist income could be regarded as expenses, but the final say over reasonable costs should rest with the government as our representatives.

We do not have to go straight down the presidential route - give a pared down monarchy a go and if that fails, then move on to presidential.

I've just watched a young person (another one) who told the story of how she was helped by The Prince's Trust. She was in prison at the time, started being helped by the Trust then, and has gone on to set up her own florist's business plus two cafés. She said that Prince Charles, as he then was, took a personal interest, came to meet all her staff and see how she had succeeded, with the help of the Trust, to turn her life around.
Over one million young people have been helped by the Trust over the years.

I can't see a short-term President beginning and following through on anything like this of this scale.

What would have happened to those young people?

When I first heard this I thought it was slightly odd. However, it’s being read as a prayer by the Archbishop of Canterbury: “I swear that I will pay true allegiance to Your Majesty according to the law. So help me God”.

So not dissimilar to the words in the National Anthem: “God save the King”

I can’t believe this mad idea for the serfs to join in (if they wish of course) by swearing allegiance to the King, ever got off the drawing board.
After the Oath business the Archbishop of Canterbury will apparently say “God Save the King” and the response is “God Save King Charles” Long May he Reign” May he Live for Ever”.
What? Long Reign! He’s already elderly and no one lives for ever anyway, not even a king!

Well, his Granny lived to 101.

I suspect most of these novel ideas come, not from Charles, but
Lambeth Palace. The coronation one presumes is regarded as a state occasion and matters appertaining to is decided by the government and all religious aspects by Lambeth Palace. I doubt Charles has much say in the matter, he would receive "advice". Not that I have a direct line into Lambeth Palace, the Royal Family or No 10. This is just my perception. For the record I am neither a Royalist (those big hats don't suit me and I look awful in frills) nor a Republican, I am an Indifferentist (if that's not a word it is now).

Well if I do happen to see some of it there will be oaths,( but not of allegiance)

Made me 😆

‘All who so desire in the Abbey and elsewhere’

This is not asking all to stand in front of their television

No it isn’t
We are not supposed to do this at all, any public or private joining in is entirely up to us.Being British that likely means very few of us will do it.😄

Just be glad we don't live in a country where this might be compulsory and dissension and protests might incur imprisonment
Sorry but this instantly reminded me of Hillaire Belloc and what happened to his children in poems, particularly Jim

His Mother, as She dried her eyes,
Said, ``Well--it gives me no surprise,
He would not do as he was told!''
His Father, who was self-controlled,
Bade all the children round attend
To James's miserable end,
And always keep a-hold of Nurse
For fear of finding something worse.^

Easy! Turn off any devices for a week, TV, iPad etc and go for a long walk in the country every day. Take a packed lunch to avoid mention of it in the shops.
Gala has the right idea.
Can't understand why people get so exercised over something they say they're not going to watch or celebrate. Go about your day. Enjoy.

And as Callistemon21 put it,
It's not compulsory, nor is watching it compulsory either.
Nor are street parties, nor is volunteering on Monday.

Just be glad we don't live in a country where this might be compulsory and dissension and protests might incur imprisonment.

Me neither, my pinkie is hurting from practising ☹

Visgir1 Sun 30-Apr-23 12:47:01

This really is a bonkers idea, but some will do it.
Not me tho '

Callistemon21 Sun 30-Apr-23 12:44:32

It's not easy when your fingers won't do what they used to do!

Callistemon21 Sun 30-Apr-23 12:41:41

Right, must remember the Brownie/Guide salute and say:

"I promise that I will do my best, to be true to myself and develop my beliefs, to serve the King and my community, to help other people and to keep the (Brownie) Guide law."

Glorianny Sun 30-Apr-23 12:40:55

LRavenscroft Sun 30-Apr-23 12:27:07

I won't be swearing an oath of allegiance as I don't need to - my family roots go back to Anglo Saxon times. A scaled down version with a salute to the pageantry and folklore, a definite yes, inclusivity of all faiths and cultures, a definite yes. The times are moving forwards. But, if we were to remove a thousand year old monarchy with what and with whom would we replace it? As a nation we need to tread carefully for the future as the old ways don't seem to work anymore and the future appears to be a murky fog on the horizon.

Ladyripple Sun 30-Apr-23 12:26:50

Not a chance. But I am not a fan of Charles and never have been.A weak man.

Yes of course, about the same time when hell freezes over.

A lot of people think the Coronation is on Monday because they’ve been given that day off. I’ve corrected them if they do want to watch what is an historic event.

Callistemon21 Sun 30-Apr-23 12:11:55

We'll probably watch the ceremony then I think are off out to celebrate 🥂🍾🎉🎂 😁
