Apparently we are all supposed to stand up in front of our tellys and pledge allegiance to the King saying stuff like “ May the King live forever”
Will you me doing it? Me neither, I’ll be in the garden hopefully.
What does “pledge allegiance” even mean in the 21st century? Before royalist pile in, yes I do know it has its roots a few hundred years ago, and it’s taken from a Handel anthem , but , honestly , that’s no excuse is it? We’re not in the Brownies fgs.

I will be watching i was a toddler when the Elizabeth was made Queen now in my 70's i will be watching as possibly the last time i will see this happen but No i will not be making any pledge

We’re not “supposed” to do anything unless we wish to. As a monarchist who remembers the late Queen’s coronation I’m looking forward to it and will join in with an oath of allegiance.

As an American I wonder if it bothers you that your tax money is being used to fund the coronation? I know that Charles has lots of his own . I dislike it when our taxes are used to fund events that could pay for more housing for the poor, to help children, etc.

Utter tin eared gobbledegook. Its laughable and we're paying for it!

wicklowwinnie Tue 02-May-23 12:25:51

Pledge allegiance?
I won't even be watching it.

maddyone Tue 02-May-23 10:37:25

One of my children had to swear allegiance as part of his job. I don’t think he should have had to do that, but he did, I watched him. He laughed when I asked him if he was going to do it on Coronation Day and said he’d already done it.

I think they are having a lend of everyone, for sure. They can’t be serious!

Philippa111 Tue 02-May-23 10:11:26

Absolutely not. So ridiculous. Which century do they think they are living in? The days of serfdom have long gone!

Same here Callistemon! Role on the meritocracy!
A man's a man for a 'that !

And a woman's work is never done 😁
Must go and scrub the sheets and put them through the mangle.

Pledging allegiance is feudal and even if the country were feudal I'd probably not be a freeman but a woman chattel.

😁

My ancestors were probably serfs.
My passport tells me I'm a citizen, not a subject.
They'd be happy for me, I'm sure. 🙂

Over 70% of Scots say they wont be watching ,sadly people in the age group on here seem to still think the RF is a "good thing" with one women interviewed who said the RF have never disappointed her and they were "the only thing she believes in " .Poor woman she must have had an awful life if the RF are her only hope!!
Having said that there are many groups of Veterans( armed forces) and other aged folk FOR an Independent Republic of Scotland back in Europe where despite opinions here we will be welcomed .Humza was invited by the German ambassador to the UK to a dinner in London in his honour which was also attended by a number of other EU Representatives.

The photographs show a happy gathering of like minded people ,there were no English/WM representatives invited !

Being an insomniac I hear
it too often (and no, I remain in my bed).

I remember those far off days rushing to get out of the cinema before the National anthem began.
However it’s still played every night on r4 when it ends and world service takes over.

annodomini Tue 02-May-23 08:51:27

70 years ago, we stood for the National Anthem at the end of a cinema film, though there were some of us who managed to escape before the credits ended. We were expected to stand up for the Anthem when it came up on television and certainly did during the Queen's coronation. Those days of deference are over and I can't say I'm sorry. No, I am not going to swear allegiance to Charles III - or to anyone else, human or (allegedly)divine.

Fleurpepper Tue 02-May-23 07:57:14

Baggs quoted '“I swear that I will pay true allegiance to Your Majesty, and to your heirs and successors according to law. So help me God.”

so no need for me to do it again, once was quite enough, thanks.

Lambeth Palace are now saying pledging allegiance is voluntary so I won't be sent to the tower for not complying.

😁

🧗‍♂️🧗‍♀️ here we are, abseiling down the battlements

It does sound rather American, I shall be raising a glass and that is it.

Pledging allegiance to the king sounds as though it's come from a Hollywood movie maybe King Arthur?
Whoever thought this was a good idea doesn't understand the British people.

I think it came from Lambeth Palace 🤔

Nope, and wishing for somebody to live forever is just plain daft.

Not only daft, but very unkind.
