Every life is precious, human or not. The police overstepped the mark and must be made accountable. The dogs weren’t aggressive nor had they caused injuries. Where are the police when you need them these days? It’s just taken 5 months for a police officer to come and take a statement regarding an assault in December! And we’ve had to turn detective to try and find the offender as they’re not interested. I shouldn’t have been surprised, we have a drug dealer who deals next to a school and to under age kids. They’re not in the slightest bit interested. So to send out an armed police unit for that is frankly unacceptable.

Dogs shot by Met police
(193 Posts)Apologies for inability to post a link. Yesterday a woman was attacked by two dogs. Police responded. The DM has a video on line showing a man holding back two large, aggressive bull type dogs as police try to talk to him. The police killed both dogs by shooting them.
The woman filming this is heard to criticise this. The police spokesperson states the dogs posed a threat to police. Having watched the video, I don’t know what else they could have done in the circumstances.
Sorry for yet another post about our of control dogs with irresponsible, ill-informed owners.
I watched the clip on that video and all I could see was a hysterical woman standing some distance away from the man and his two dogs. The woman was screaming and screaming and I saw her picking up her own dog and still acting hysterically. The man was standing further away and his dogs were on leashes and were not running loose they were not even barking. I would say perhaps the man was vulnerable as it was reported he is homeless but that woman also sounded like she needed some help and she was causing a lot of trouble.
I think it would have been possible for the police to call an emergency vet or even the R.S.P.C.A. to assess the situation and the outcome would have probably been handled much more calmly, it was awful to shoot those dogs like that.
Many times I have been in the vets with my own dog and I have seen every breed in the vets from the smallest to the largest and not once have I seen any of the large breed of dogs become aggressive.
At the end of the day these were dogs. I don’t value the lives of dogs above those of humans. In my opinion the police did the best they could under the circumstances to keep everyone safe.
I expect trained policemen to try to calm dangerous situations involving animals or people.
Anyone who has watched Graeme the dog trainer, or Paul O'Grady knows you don't shout aggressively, but instead speak as gently as may be in situations where dogs and people are frightened and everybody is barking at everyone else.
*The met police disgust me
Let’s call it murder *
No let’s not call it murder. It’s nothing close to murder.
The Met has had more than acceptable levels of poor policing/abusive behaviour from officers recently
I don’t include this incident in that
No doubt the officers will be out through an investigation.
I feel for them. We can’t deny the number of dog attacks causing death or serious injury has increased. We’ve seen the clip of the screaming woman. The officers were responding to what they understood to be aggressive dogs, being handled with a man they knew had been banned from keeping dogs after a previous incident of aggression. Let those who can judge do so. Let’s rubbish police officers running towards danger.
Who’s to say the incident with the woman, handily filmed, was the only one involving those dogs and their owner who was banned from keeping animals for a reason?
It was not murder
Murder is the unlawful killing of a human being by another human being.
They were dogs not humans.
Met police disgust me
They have had their problems lately but that is the few.
I truly hope you don't need their services yourself one day nanna49.
I watched a news slot yesterday about a dog that was seized in a raid, it was living in awful conditions and seemed aggressive however the police saw potential in this German Shepherd cross and he has now passed all his training as a police dog with flying colours he looked the picture of happiness, with control, speed and obedience alongside his new master
This is just to add to the debate and not just to do with the incidence except because the mentally ill man was shouting at the police I believe they completely exasperated the situation for both man and dogs by shouting back making a lot of aggressive moves by walking forward threatenly confusing both the man and the dogs, he had no weapons and a softer approach would have saved both death and tasering

Dont believe everything you read except when you are reading something written by an anonymous person on the internet. Then its definitely true.
Nature of these forums I'm afraid. If you want to DM me please feel free I won't be anonymous then.
You only have to watch the footage, this is factual.

The clip on the tube shows one incident. He appears to be drinking. His speech seemed slurred during the interaction with police The man was banned from keeping dogs because of a previous incident when three of his dogs attacked and killed a dog
MOnica’s experience will be one experienced by social workers, health, school staff etc visiting a fair number of homes these days
I don’t know enough to condemn the police fir ‘over reacting’ They’d have been aware why this man was banned from owning dogs
Damned if they do damned if they dont
Agree. I don't think you can just take one experience & suggest that police were therefore correct. There are many incidents where police don't handle situations well. Just because they are an authority doesn't mean that they get it right, or that they don't take advantage of their own power.
IMO it makes things far worse because this guy is homeless, therefore vulnerable.
It's a dangerous path to suggest that people with mental health issues shouldn't somehow be pet owners. Or that just because someone has a mental health issue that they should be deemed out of control.
The footage of the index 'attack' the woman is completely out of control. IMO she should be arrested she's responsible for worsening this situation, falsely reporting to police & ultimately the unnecessary brutal murder of two dogs.

The dogs were not 'innocent' thay had attacked someone. The dogs are bred to be aggressive.
Of course they were innocent, and they weren't aggressive & hadn't attacked anyone. Don't believe everything you read
The police were aggressive & mishandled a situation that didn't have to end that way
Let's call it what it is. cold blooded murder
These dogs weren't aggressive. They didn't attack the woman either. She got tangled in leads & fell over injuring her knee. The met police were wrong to shoot them, they weren't acting aggressively during the incident with police either, and were on leads.
I work with dogs everyday & these dogs weren't out of control, the incident didn't have to end that way. The footage of the woman shows her to be out of control entirely.
The two dogs shot dead were described as friendly & in no way aggressive by local people.
Be careful people our police are becoming like American police, trigger happy, out of control. And it makes it worse that this guy was homeless & therefore vulnerable. Disgusting.
I agree Franbern and Iam6.
Oh yes, me too.
I heartily agree Iam64. That petition I would sign.
I currently have two but often have lived with 3 dogs. My experience in recent times is if too many offf lead groups of dogs with no recall. It’s changed my 50 years well established easy dog walking routes
Yesterday during the 2 mile drive from town to home, I saw r young bull dog breeds being walked. All on harness, all straight going, pulling and well in front of the young men handling them, none of whom had any idea how to manage these dogs.
I’m mor interested in petitions to regulate dog breeding, ownership, safety issues then. A petition against a police officer doing his best in difficult circumstances
Totally agree with Iam64,. Even if these animals had been taken in alive, they would probably have been put down within s shot time. Much more control needs to be brought in with regards to keeping animals as pets.
Must say I really have little feeling about the putting down of aggressive dogs, if it can save one child from horrible mauling.
absolutely awaful. I have added my name to the petition www.change.org/p/hold-the-met-police-criminally-accountable-for-the-barbaric-killing-of-two-leashed-dogs?utm_content=cl_sharecopy_36214178_en-GB%3A10&recruiter=42236252&recruited_by_id=007129e0-6230-0130-17b0-00221964dac8&utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=copylink&utm_campaign=psf_combo_share_message&utm_term=psf_combo_share_initial&share_bandit_exp=message-36214178-en-GB&fbclid=IwAR1qDCG1OvZieoEaI45v5gbxGo7TDA_fX2KpI71WaMw6WDJjyuBV6h0-FcU

Shooting a dog is unlikely to be a clean kill in most cases. Just as shooting foxes is unlikely to produce clean kills. Farmers are less familiar with firearms than in former times and a fox is a small target.
Exactly.

Polly / Dickens/Monica it seems no woman was attacked there was a screaming woman holding her small dog up but she wasnt attacked as far as can be seen
Did you watch the video above though. The woman is hysterical, and even so, the guy and dogs are totally calm.
Her behaviour seems to be the cause of all the kerfuffle- I wonder how she feels now. It is because of her the police was called and the situation escalated.

Someone just shared this clip which gives a slightly different view of the dreadful events! Again not the whole story but the only aggression I can see is coming from the female and her dog doesn't look injured in any way, neither do the dogs killed appear aggressive at this point.

Goodness, yes, that shows a totally different view of the event- the young guy and the dogs are calm despite a massive hysteria and screams- that would have upset most dogs. She seems mentally deranged.
How terribly sad.
