Anyone from Coalville/NW Leicestershire. What do you think about the Bridgen saga?

I'll come clean, I find him a loathsome individual and there should be a by-election asap.

I would imagine that his constituents are counting the days to the next election. Would anyone want to take any issue that usually falls within an MP's remit to an MP with such flawed thinking? How could you have any confidence in his judgment of th e possibility of him making a rational decision and following through.

Is he your MP, Fleurpepper?
Is there a by-election (if that was on the news, I missed it).

How do some of them get through the selection process? 🤔

I'm not from his constituency (as you know) but close by. I have never met anyone with a good word to say about him.

He has had the Conservative whip removed and joined reform. I've no idea how a by-election can be triggered in that circumstance - anyone able to enlighten me?

No, but I know the area well. He and his 'twin' Mark Francois always struck me as little Captain Manwarings and quite loathsome.

What has happened to Francois by the way- has he disappeared?

But we love Captain Mainwaring, not a good comparison. He's not loathsome, not in the same category at all.
Underneath that brusque exterior was a good man. (Mainwaring, not Bridgen.)

"Don't tell him, Pike!"

No by-election, but he is apparently joining the Reclaim Party, which is Lawrence Fox’s new home, I saw it on the news the other day. I don’t think his constituents will have any say in his choices until the next election, that’s how it usually works. It seems completely wrong.

Callistemon21 Fri 12-May-23 16:36:10

Yes, his updated information states he is a member of the Reclaim Party.

It is wrong; they have someone representing them whose policies they did not vote for.

Oh agreed.

I shudder to think Bridgen served in the Marines but never finished the course. Wonder what happened.

It’s no disgrace not to have finished Royal Marine training…. It’s okay.

Amen to that.

Yes, there is a comma missing in my sentence- and should have written 'however'.

Ah yes, English punctuation, like spelling , can catch out the unwary.

ronib Fri 12-May-23 16:57:56

Prince Edward dropped out too ….

M0nica Fri 12-May-23 17:01:37

Did Brigden drop out, or did the Marines kick him out?

I just cannot work out how the Conservatives approved him as a candidate or the constituency chose him.

That is what I'd like to know.

I think you are perhaps on the wrong thread ChickenLicken

ChickenLicken Fri 12-May-23 21:01:19

Doh! I was trying to start a thread! Thanks for pointing it out, Fleurpepper!

Fleurpepper Fri 12-May-23 21:09:28

No worries- it was quite funny.

Bonne chance.

Yes, it's very, very tough.
Unless someone has tried even part it, they shouldn't criticise.

Is anyone even paying the slightest attention to the arguments that Andrew Bridgen raised? Isn’t that more important than worrying about Royal Marine training?

Comparing the Covid vaccine to the Holocaust do you mean, and then joining a party which endorses his beliefs? He has more than one screw loose, he’s not fit to be an MP. I’d be furious if I was one of his constituents.

ronib Sat 13-May-23 10:45:59

And exactly why did Andrew Bridgen throw away his parliamentary career? Leaving aside the obvious mistake of referring to the Holocaust - what was his motivation and main argument? What evidence is there either way?

I’m not getting into a pointless debate about vaccines, he is not representing his constituents. The Holocaust statement was unforgivable in itself, but he had had other issues as well.

He was also suspended from the House of Commons earlier in 2002 over his “careless and cavalier attitude” to lobbying rules and suggesting the woman investigating him could be bribed with a peerage.

He made multiple approaches to ministers and public officials on behalf of Mere Plantations, a UK-based reforestation company with forests in Ghana, for which he was initially paid £12,000 a year as an adviser, a report by the Standards Committee found.

It stated that Mr Bridgen then attempted to influence Standards Commissioner Kathryn Stone during her investigation by claiming he heard a “rumour” she would only receive a peerage if she ruled against him because he was an outspoken critic of then Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

(From Evening Standard, this is reported in numerous publications).
