Braverman attempts a cover up.

She asked her civil servants to try two things after speeding

1. to arrange a completely safety private course to avoid being reported

2. then she asked to be entered for a course anonymously.

They refused as it was not in their remit.

So she took the points.

This was reported widely as in including the Guardian and the Mail, but its become an issue for two reasons

the attempted cover up
and asking civil servants to collude with the cover up.

Its the second which in my mind is possibly the most reprehensible.

Both speak to her character however - "I am different, I am better, I can be above the law. (and I want to hide my wrong-doings)

Hopefully, another nail in the coffin, tho unlikely to be a sackable offence?

Golly Primrose, that's a very strange post " looked like a wolf with blood dripping from her mouth..." surely not..

You should have seen her! As I said she was drooling and looked positively gleeful. Awful woman.

What a vast waste of time for ministers trying to run the country at a difficult time. She made a slight error of judgement but definitely NOT a crime or a sackable offence. Go home lefties and spend YOUR time doing something useful.

Honestly guys! Can you imagine how many famous people get speeding tickets and we never see them on Zoom courses or live courses. Of course Suella asked if she could do the course privately. And she is very very busy - trying her best for OUR country. I can’t believe how much attention this is getting when there are so so many more important issues.

People need to remember that Labour’s Harriet Harman has been caught speeding several times. Once when she was doing 99 mph and once when she was Solicitor General. She was given a ban for about 4 DAYS plus a fine and there was outcry at the time about such a lenient sentence!

Going at speeds like that she would not be eligible for an online course. I am guessing SB was just over, like myself. I was doing 34 in a 30.

I can’t believe that after so many posts, and so much information about why this is an issue, you still don’t get the point Primrose53. Many MPs speed, like the rest of the population, take it on the chin and it’s a momentary news story. This is not about the speeding!

Do you realise how patronising you sound? I absolutely DO get the point. My point is SHE ASKED A QUESTION …. That’s all she did! We know people speed, we know SB exceeded the speed limit but she did not try to get out of it, she took the points and paid the fine.

This has been pointed out to you on countless occasions and by various people and you still don’t get it!! 🤣

Doesn’t choose to get it I think Primrose53 wink

All over now so no need for anyone to continue frothing about it.

ronib Wed 24-May-23 15:40:13

Oreo what do you mean? Not all over - expect more of the same in about two weeks? Different minister, same internal battle going on. The Conservative Party are slogging this out Sunak v Johnson. Is it beginning to make sense?

I’m so pleased that’s the end of that witch hunt and it was unsuccessful. She has advisors. She asked for advice. Is it possible to have a private speed awareness course. No wonder the country’s in such a mess. Civil servants need to do their jobs and stop trying to stop this government doing theirs.

If you genuinely think Sunak’s decision was because she just asked a question, and there were no other issues, I’m astonished, but I apologise if I’ve offended you.

Civil servants should be allowed to do their jobs and not spend time on ministers' private matters.

There you are! I've corrected it for you.

How do you spend your life? Apart from trying to bait so-called "lefties?

Saetana Wed 24-May-23 19:39:34

Given the independent ethics advisor has decided she has not broken the Ministerial Code, that is now the end of the matter. Thankfully - what a waste of time! Unfortunately I now await the next attempt to get her fired/force her to resign, they will not give up now she is in their sights.

Dinahmo Wed 24-May-23 20:53:17

The speeding argument might be over but there's still the Ruwanda question to be dealt with. And I don't mean sending asylum seekers there.

ronib Wed 24-May-23 21:18:02

Dinahmo SB set up a charity in Rwanda with Cherie Blair so maybe investigate both of them?

MaizieD Wed 24-May-23 22:33:27

Cheri Blair isn't Home Secretary keen to send asylum seekers to Rwanda, never to return to the UK.

I understood that the charity was involved in training lawyers. That can be done while still understanding/knowing that Rwanda isn't a safe country for refugees...

ronib Thu 25-May-23 04:20:36

SB inherited the scheme from Priti Patel and had no involvement in its inception when Attorney General.
I think it’s an advantage for SB and Cherie Blair to have prior knowledge of Rwanda in a different capacity. I would be interested to hear CB’s comments on safety in Rwanda.
The whole point about seeking asylum is that it is intended to last for the duration of the threat to life in the home country. Therefore once the threat is fully resolved, migrants can expect to return to their home country. I hope that this will be built in to the Rwandan system in the unlikely event that the scheme goes ahead.

You’ve corrected nothing, just revealed your arrogance. Obviously the failure of this particular witch hunt has really got to you.

ronib Thu 25-May-23 09:34:03

Just caught up on the next witch hunt- Baroness Falkner, 40 civil servants, channel 4, leaks etc.
Is this a record in turnaround time?

Dinahmo SB set up a charity in Rwanda with Cherie Blair so maybe investigate both of them?

The point is that some of the lawyers trained by the charity are in the Rwanda govt. The same govt that she is now dealing with regarding refugees. This from the Independent:

The home secretary co-founded a charity called the Africa Justice Foundation with Cherie Blair, which trained Rwandan government lawyers between 2010 and 2015.

Several people the charity worked with are now key members of President Paul Kagame’s government and are involved in the UK’s £140m deal to send asylum seekers to Rwanda.

Ms Braverman did not officially disclose her previous links to the country when appointed home secretary in 2022, despite the deal being a linchpin of the government’s migration policy and ongoing legal challenges alleging politically-driven human rights violations including torture, murder and kidnappings.

One former minister told The Independent that the home secretary “never mentioned” her work with the charity and should have been “upfront and transparent”, while two former standards chiefs said Ms Braverman should have formally disclosed her former role.

Ms Braverman resigned from her post as director of the Africa Justice Foundation weeks before being elected to parliament, and did not declare her previous role to Home Office permanent secretary Matthew Rycroft last year.

Wyllow3 Thu 25-May-23 09:38:28

That's the second accusation of "witch hunt".

I must have used the wrong herbs. wink

Seriously tho, my wish is to see someone more suitable as Home Secretary and hoped this would be the occasion it happened. I feel no glee in it. Braverman is responsible for whipping up a lot of hate and equally bad, she is ineffectual.

Nothing has changed: she has links with a very shady far right group with connections to the right in the USA and endangering her own party never mind the rest of us, what with the tightening up of laws on strikes and on peaceful public protests.

ronib Thu 25-May-23 10:02:33

Dinahmo I think it’s a benefit for SB to have a good relationship with key members of the Rwandan government. SB will have the benefit of unique personal experiences of the internal workings of that government therefore. SB only became Home Secretary in September 2022.
I don’t know the full rules about disclosure but since SB had resigned from the charity in 2015 and became Home Secretary in 2022, I wonder if there’s a 7 year time frame after which disclosure is not required?
I don’t think SB would need to make a disclosure to Matthew Mycroft but rather to the positive vetting team btw.

ronib Thu 25-May-23 10:03:34

Rycroft typo

ronib Thu 25-May-23 10:12:15

No am wrong. SB needed to make a list of interests to the Permanent Secretary.
Maybe current working interests and not historic?
