Braverman attempts a cover up.

She asked her civil servants to try two things after speeding

1. to arrange a completely safety private course to avoid being reported

2. then she asked to be entered for a course anonymously.

They refused as it was not in their remit.

So she took the points.

This was reported widely as in including the Guardian and the Mail, but its become an issue for two reasons

the attempted cover up
and asking civil servants to collude with the cover up.

Its the second which in my mind is possibly the most reprehensible.

Both speak to her character however - "I am different, I am better, I can be above the law. (and I want to hide my wrong-doings)

Hopefully, another nail in the coffin, tho unlikely to be a sackable offence?

Honestly guys! Can you imagine how many famous people get speeding tickets and we never see them on Zoom courses or live courses. Of course Suella asked if she could do the course privately. And she is very very busy - trying her best for OUR country. I can’t believe how much attention this is getting when there are so so many more important issues.

People need to remember that Labour’s Harriet Harman has been caught speeding several times. Once when she was doing 99 mph and once when she was Solicitor General. She was given a ban for about 4 DAYS plus a fine and there was outcry at the time about such a lenient sentence!

Going at speeds like that she would not be eligible for an online course. I am guessing SB was just over, like myself. I was doing 34 in a 30.

I can’t believe that after so many posts, and so much information about why this is an issue, you still don’t get the point Primrose53. Many MPs speed, like the rest of the population, take it on the chin and it’s a momentary news story. This is not about the speeding!

Whitewavemark2 Wed 24-May-23 09:52:13

Just over usually means the difference between injury/serious injury or death, or stopping in time to avoid an accident.

There is never “just over” for the victims.

There is zero excuse for speeding.

Nicenanny3 Wed 24-May-23 10:10:52

Suella Braverman is not going to be getting her P45, the witch hunt failed 😊

Chocolatelovinggran Wed 24-May-23 10:26:12

Golly Primrose, that's a very strange post " looked like a wolf with blood dripping from her mouth..." surely not..

maddyone Wed 24-May-23 10:42:39

Just been announced, SB is not going to face any charges. So it’s all over, nothing to see here folks.

Mollygo Wed 24-May-23 10:47:13

The enquiry has already happened here on GN and SB has been found guilty on all counts. The outcome on here was never in doubt, whatever official decision was made.
(I have no detailed knowledge of the ministerial code, nor any liking for SB, so cannot comment on either. )
Now it’s time to start on Rishi Sunak who has said she didn’t break the ministerial code.
We could discuss that for several pages. Shall we question his knowledge?
Shall we hunt up all the evidence of other politicians who have been speeding and may or may not have made undiscovered private arrangements?

Maremia Wed 24-May-23 10:50:49

It was never about the actual speeding charge. It is about who is allowed to be above the rules, and it looks as if our Home Secretary, in charge of Law and Order, may do as she pleases.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 24-May-23 10:55:33

If you mean asking about a one on one course Maremia, a lot of high profile people have them and the companies running the courses actually offer them so as to avoid other attendees being distracted by the famous person in their midst. It’s entirely within ‘the rules’. As I must have already said twice on here.

maddyone Wed 24-May-23 11:04:04

Well said GSM.
What if it had been the King? Would posters have expected him to attend a public re education course?

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 24-May-23 11:07:08

Oh, some would maddy, I have no doubt.

MaizieD Wed 24-May-23 11:08:06

Well, panic over. Sunak has (without consulting his Ethics Adviser) decided that Braverman has not breached the Ministerial Code.

So that's alright then, isn't it... hmm

Where her long, undeclared, association with Rwanda stands I don't know...

ronib Wed 24-May-23 11:14:40

MaizieD some codes have been broken along the lines… time to trace the fault line?
Rwanda - SB with Cherie Blair set up a charity. Won’t you have fun with that one?

Casdon Wed 24-May-23 11:19:11

I do actually feel slightly sorry for Sunak, he’s caught between a rock and a hard place. What I’m in no doubt about though is that there will be more major embarrassments for him very soon with Sue-Ellen, she has now used at least seven of her nine lives, and that in the end he will have no option but to ‘let her go’.

ronib Wed 24-May-23 11:58:21

Casdon that’s your personal fantasy.

25Avalon Wed 24-May-23 12:08:06

Princess Ann was once caught speeding and more recently Justin Welby. Don’t hear much about the latter. Neither attended a course.

growstuff Wed 24-May-23 12:33:29

Tom Tugendhat was banned from driving for six months because he was caught using a mobile phone. He already had six points on his licence. It was in the media for a couple of days, but doesn't appear to have done his career much harm.

If Braverman had paid the fine or done the course (like everybody else), without making it look as though she wanted some kind of special treatment, it would all have been forgotten about by now.

It's because she tried to get the civil service involved in something which was a purely personal matter that this has blown up in her face. Moreover, she has form on not following "rules".

There weren't any courses when Princess Anne was caught speeding (or has there been a more recent one?)

It's not obligatory to do the course. Yu can pay up and take the points if you want to. It's entirely a personal choice.

But the whole affair has nothing to do with taking courses or not taking courses or even getting a speeding ticket.

It is about the improper use of civil servants by a government minister.

Does 'following the rules' not apply in your world, 25Avalon?

I think Welby was fairly recent, but this is completely irrelevant to Braveman's improper use of civil servants.

She asked a question. "No Minister we cannot help you there,it is a private matter". Should have been end of story. No some little man / woman in the civil service thought they would get some notoriety and try and get a minister sacked. He could have asked his superior for advice, but oh no a leak to the press satisfied them.

ronib Wed 24-May-23 13:26:27

Like the typo- Braveman. Yes needs to be pretty brave to put up with this ….. fill in the missing word.
You have failed to understand that there was no improper use of civil servants . It has not been proven. End of the story… please 🙏

Casdon Wed 24-May-23 13:36:52

Casdon that’s your personal fantasy.

😂 I do not fantasise about anything to do with Sue-Ellen I can promise you. It’s a prediction, based on her track record for cocking up everything she touches.

25Avalon Wed 24-May-23 13:58:32

I’m not certain Braverman was breaking the rules MaizieD when she asked the Civil Servant if she could do the course privately. Depends on your slant, but the answer was no and that should have been end of. Why is it being raised now?

Justin Welby was doing 25 in a 20mph zone and was recently fined but not splashed all over the press.

Do you realise how patronising you sound? I absolutely DO get the point. My point is SHE ASKED A QUESTION …. That’s all she did! We know people speed, we know SB exceeded the speed limit but she did not try to get out of it, she took the points and paid the fine.

This has been pointed out to you on countless occasions and by various people and you still don’t get it!! 🤣
