That’s it really. Harry has lost his bid in court to be allowed to pay for armed security when he’s on the UK.

Monica says it all very succinctly and I agree with every word.

So let's have some facts. Senior members of the RF have 24hr protection teams. These are Charles and Camilla, William and Kate and their children. Other royals have protection when on royal duties. Harry and Meghan and their children visiting the UK would seem to be on the same level as W&K that is children and grandchildren of the monarch,. So surely they should have the same protection.
Beatrice and Eugenie both had full time protection teams until they left university.
There does seem to be some inequality in the system which seems to value some more than others.

Smileless2012 Tue 23-May-23 16:18:29

Yes, a good post M0nica.

Can't see him coming back here for sometime, maybe not until his father dies so it's a mute point really isn't it.

William and Catherine ( you afford Meghan the courtesy of spelling her name correctly and in full, why not Catherine?) get protection in their "off time" because they earn it by performing royal duties, and William is heir to the throne. Harry has no intention of performing royal duties, far too onerous, but wants protection if he deigns to visit for a jolly. As pointed out up thread Anne's children didn't get protection despite being grandchildren of the monarch, they didn't get titles either. Anne still only gets protection while on royal duties. You seem to want to make Harry and his family special exceptions.

He seemed to slip in and out of the UK, quite nicely, without anyone noticing for the coronation. Well done him, hiding behind his Aunt's hat feather. Funny to everyone who saw that feather flying about.

Imagine he's parenting in CA and won't be back until his dad passes.

Could be wrong, maybe he'll race through LHR today. grin

Forsythia Tue 23-May-23 16:49:26

They are not on the same level as William and Catherine. For a start, William is heir to the throne. William and Catherine are working royals. William and Catherine have children who are visible and real. Harry is on the same level as Peter, Zara, Eugenie and Beatrice none of whom have tax payer funded security because, like Harry, they are not working royals. These are also facts.

They left.
They dont work for the Royals
They dont work for the UK

The book wasn’t pulled Glorianny. That’s nonsense. The ‘Sussex Squad’ put that story out and it has never been verified or confirmed because it didn’t happen. Tom Bower also stood by every word and invited the journalist in question, along with H & M to sue him.
Also the launch of the book in North America was later than in the UK which is standard practice and also led to the pulled story.

I know that Rosie51 and it is interesting to wonder why Anne's children didn't but Andrew's did have 24 hour protection at least until they finished university.
It is nothing to do with performing duties. George , Charlotte and Louis have full time protection.

tickingbird Tue 23-May-23 19:29:02

So would Meghan and Harry if they were still living in the UK as working members of the RF. It’s not rocket science.

varian Tue 23-May-23 19:38:27

They can't have it both ways. They made their choice.

Jaberwok Tue 23-May-23 20:04:13

George,Charlotte and Louis are direct heirs to the throne. Of course they, along with their parents, Grandfather and step Grandmother have full time protection. Obviously Officials and other visiting dignitaries have full protection, they are important people, Harry is not evenly remotely important, not any more. His choice.

Rosie51 Tue 23-May-23 20:13:47

Glorianny I think you'll find that was because Anne never assumed the jumped up self-importance that Andrew always has, which he extended to his daughters. Harry appears to share that character trait with his uncle. Anne famously said her children just happened to have the Queen as their grandmother.
Interestingly Lady Louise, daughter of Edward, is entitled to be styled 'princess' now, but has elected to stay Lady. She comes across as very grounded.

Did you not want to comment on the difference in courtesy you display towards Catherine and Meghan?

V3ra Tue 23-May-23 20:33:10

Andrew and Harry as children grew up as next in line after Charles and William.
Maybe they found it harder than Edward and Anne to relinquish that status as each heir had their own family and A and H were consequently lower down the line of inheritance?

That might be true but the team responsible for organising the protection claim it is nothing to do with the RF and they make the decision based on risk.

So far as I know Meghan is commonly called Meghan- I've always spelt it with an "h" and Kate is called Kate-usually spelt with a K. Just common usage.

I think this conversation has brought up some interesting points, and perhaps has educated the public somewhat about how police for hire are handled.

I totally agree that the public should not have to pay for his security expenses now, but don't really see an issue if he hires them and pays for them himself, especially if private security is not allowed to be armed.

So I wonder, if I were a visiting Sheik doing business in London, what sort of security I would have? Could I apply for a permit to allow my own security to be armed? Is the London Police different from the National police (I don't know what they are called), and what police force does the security in different parts of the UK? It's opened a whole new line of curiosity for me.

I wondered the same.

I know my brother's security. What happens in Canada?

William and the rest of the RF always refers to Catherine as Catherine. I have heard her answer a child who asked her what her name was with "Catherine" Just because the tabloids and their ilk refer to her as Kate doesn't mean others shouldn't offer the courtesy of using her full name spelled correctly.

There were more Games than other threads recently in Active - I counted one late evening (how sad is that 😁)

I counted them a late evening recently too Callistemon21🙄

... but I'm even sadder as I spent 10 minutes "hiding" them all! grin

I'm on the desktop site so it doesn't have that facility.

Anyway, I might want to join in one or two 😁
I have on rare occasions!

Rosie51 Tue 23-May-23 22:53:46

I'm on a laptop and haven't noticed a 'hide' facility. Should I have done?

GrannyRose15 Tue 23-May-23 23:13:31

My understanding is the reason he doesn’t want private security here is because they wouldn’t be allowed to carry guns.
