Has the penny dropped (as fast as the Pound)- Brexit is a disaster

Is there anyone here on GN still prepared to stand and say that it is not- and give evidence to the effect?

Whitewavemark2 Sun 11-Jun-23 13:52:46

Do you expect everything you vote for to be written in tablets of stone for all time?

What a pickle we would be in!!

So yes of course if there is another referendum (and I sincerely hope there is not) and it resulted in reversing the decision, then assuming the EU were in agreement, it would be reversed.

Oreo Sun 11-Jun-23 13:51:59

Smileless2012 😂 yeah that sums it up nicely for some.
Of course it was a democratic vote the first time around.

Smileless2012 Sun 11-Jun-23 13:47:46

Brexit has never been a democratic choice and And that Democracy means it can be changed, or even reversed in the future. Genuinely confused by this.

So, if there was another referendum and the majority voted to reverse Brexit that would be democratic but the fact that the majority of those who took the time to vote, voted for Brexit is undemocraticconfused.

So how & when are we rejoining the EU?
Is it just going to happen quietly whilst no one is looking or is there going to be an announcement?
‘Ok everyone, we’re rejoining the EU as of next Wednesday’
I mean, seriously, how is it going to happen?

In a way we are already retreating from the hard brexit forced on us by Johnson.

NI is one example and closer working is definitely on the cards.

As we try to recover from the hammer blows of brexit we will undoubtedly begin to cooperate in many more areas.

Oreo Sun 11-Jun-23 13:36:01

Maybee70 You’re right there I don’t listen to it, am working part time shifts and childminding in free time for DD’s.
If Brexit is mentioned in all in ‘Rory’s podcasts, and the subject annoys you then listening can’t be good for a peaceful life, but obvs that’s up to you.smile

Oh Poppyred, come off it! Everybody has known for a very long time. What were you called before, and Oreo!

Don't feel sorry for me, despite being seriously affected by Brexit is so so many ways, as MayBe70 says- I have a magical life. So don't waste your sorry on me.

Nothing goady about my post- it is clear that Johnson's demise is a game changer, and that Brexit has never been a democratic choice, nor has been implemented.

And that Democracy means it can be changed, or even reversed in the future.

How you can say this is 'goady' is just weird.

Back to OP 'Is there anyone here on GN still prepared to stand and say that it is not- and give evidence to the effect?'

Do you Oreo, do you Poppy?

This is just, well weird. Who was I and poppy before? Before what exactly?Who were you? Is this the real life or just a fantasy.😆
Look, Brexit threads are a yawn fest and you thinking that Boris resigning for now! Is a ‘game changer’ is just delusional.

Maybee70 if you and DH moan about it every day ( do you
really?) then not a healthy way to live.
Listening to podcasts that talk about it all the time isn’t great either.
It will take years to sort out properly and politicians should have been honest about that. All of Europe has a refugee/ asylum seeker problem amongst others.
The greatest impact on people has been the war in Ukraine with all the knock on price hikes, that’s what’s really affecting money in pockets and the biggest worry to everyone I know.

You obviously don’t listen to The Rest is Politics then. Or it’s interview one, Listening. Can I suggest that you listen to one and then tell me that listening to such an informative, interesting, funny podcast is bad for my mental health. Their live shows sell out faster than Glastonbury. Rory is usually speaking from an airport somewhere as he never seems to stop travelling. He did the emergency Johnson podcast at one in the morning, having just returned home to Jordan. There’s also a lot of chat about wild swimming, books, football and bagpipe playing. And music hall stars…they say it’s to rekindle the At of disagreeing agreeably, something that MP’s in parliament used to do pre Brexit, too. It wasn’t me that polarised the country but a divide and rule tactic employed by vote leave.

They have produced some good stuff lately I think. Always worth a listen to though.

Neither are goady postings knowing it will stir up trouble.

Then stop being so unpleasant.

By all means argue your case but stop the personal comments.

I have noticed this happening before and am always very disappointed to realise just how unthinking and unfeeling people are to throw out such nastiness. Rise above it!

Surely we are all better than that?

Where have I been unpleasant?
Your posts are just adding fuel to any fire Whitewavemark2
Maybe you can’t see that.
The OP, as in opening post I regard as goady, and sounds like we are in court!
These threads are all over SM in different forums and usually by the same person.Just sayin’

These ridiculous people, they have done all in their power to discredit a democratic vote and don’t mind how many lives are ruined by witch hunts to get rid of people they think stand in their way, just because things didn’t go their way. Bad losers and so boring. They want to bring parliament down and our democracy. Goodness sake, get a life, stop whinging and licking old wounds, it’s pathetic. They are creating such division in this country, go and live in France or somewhere where they have what you want.

That has got to be the weakest argument I've ever heard in favour of Brexit and against Remain.

We have "a life", we are not "whingeing" - that's you trying to discredit legitimate concerns. As for the division in this country, it started long before the Referendum with the antics and tactics of the Vote Leave campaigners, and people like Johnson employing Cummings as Chief Advisor to stir up the angst and anger of the electorate - until Cummings overstepped the mark - with Johnson ridding the government of anyone who might oppose him. Democracy my foot.

We have left, you have Brexit. And so do we. If you believe we're going to keep quiet because it offends your sensibilities, talking about an issue that you'd rather not talk about - it's not going to happen. That is not how democracy works. Ask the ERG - they know how to chip away at a democratic decision taken decades ago - because it "didn't go their way".

Some posters need to take a good hard look at their personal comments directed at the OP.

There is absolutely no need for such rudeness and puerile posts.

If you find the subject of criticising Brexit boring etc. ignore the thread. I am quite sure you ignore other threads in which you have no interest.

I can only assume that you comment just to be unpleasant.

No a very good look is it?

The penny has just dropped here! I’ve realised who you are Fleurpepper or what you used to call yourself.

Still bleating on about Brexit
Trying to convince us all of your happy family life
And how everyone you meet wants to take about the god awful brexit.

I feel very sorry for you…….

Paying the price Phillipa111? In what way? The war in Ukraine and economies still in recovery from Covid have had a big impact on food and goods and services and energy price hikes in all European countries as well as other far flung places.
But you are right, no good raising blood pressure about it anyway.
I see starting these kind of threads over and over as goady postings.

No Dinahmo, I no longer live in France but am visiting French friends I haven't seen for 5 years (covid etc.). That is why our conversation touched briefly on Brexit, but you're right that we are all far more interested in talking about each others' fsmilies, our house projects, hobbies and of course wine!

Of course, as Brexit was 7 years ago.Doubt very much that anyone other than British who live in France/Germany is still rumbling on moaning about it.

DH and I moan about it all the time because there’s still hardly a day goes by when one of the side effects of Brexit isn’t in the news. And The Rest is Politics, which is the most listened to podcast in the country, tries without fail to mention the b word in each episode. It was supposed to stop the boats. It hasn’t. We were supposed to hold all the cards the minute we voted to leave and yet it has just become an exercise in damage limitation. Look how long it has taken to sort out the problems with Ireland ((who voted to remain). If Brexit had been a great success I would have happily held up my hands and said I was wrong but I can’t. Our farmers have been treated appallingly. Not sure what has happened to our fishermen, you know the ones that were used to highlight how awful the EU were even though our fishing industry only contributed a tiny amount to our GDP. Johnson’s father has taken out French citizenship so he will have access to all the benefits we have lost. My grandchildren can’t take part in the Erasmus scheme. We lost the medicines agency: it was one of the first thing to go. And Brexit supporters still can’t tell me what we’ve actually gained.

So who are these people and what exactly have they done?

Philippa111 Sun 11-Jun-23 11:47:54

Yes, we all know that it is a big disaster.

But I knew this before it even happened. It was glaringly obvious and most of the people here in Scotland knew this hence our votes rejecting it.

The poor souls who believed the hype/lies are now also paying the price. It's a heavy price we are paying and the biggest crime committed ever, against the people of the UK.

The fallout is very far reaching and ongoing but like some here have said I too can't waste any more time getting angry and sad.. Just enjoy each day as it comes and look for the good in my life.

I have to accept the things I can't change..... or raise my blood pressure with anger all the time!

I don't think it's an unmitigated disaster. What I do think is that what's done is done and there is no point in the OP's continuous wailing about it. Better to put energy into more productive channels. Rude? Yes but we've heard it all before over and over. It doesn't make any difference what any of us say she'll just be back again going on about it.

Hear hear

I know my country is in a mess and we are not part of Europe, never have been. We have a Labour government, too. Be careful what you wish for, they are no better than the Liberals ( Conservatives). I really pity the young ones coming up with the huge costs of housing, food, electricity, gas, petrol- far worse than we even had to cope with post World War 2 when at least our expectations were very ,very low. The number of homeless grows, meanwhile …
