Migrant boat capsized in Greece

Yesterday it was reported 79 feared dead in this incident. It’s now being reported as breaking news that over 600 feared dead. I can’t understand why it’s not headline news. 9 reported to have been arrested. I wish there could be an international response to people traffickers. They are the ones driving this and getting wealthy on the backs of these migrants and placing them in unsafe boats.

It has been reported on the UK news. I don’t see why it should be headline news everywhere. That won’t stop the traffickers.

tickingbird Fri 16-Jun-23 08:53:46

Because of the sheer numbers. Over 600 dead!

nanna8 Fri 16-Jun-23 08:58:02

It was headline news here yesterday. They also said most were on their way to the UK.

I wasn’t suggesting international headline news would stop the traffickers. An international response to stop the traffickers. If a similar number of people had died in a natural disaster or a fire there would be far more on the story.

Unfortunately it’s a very complicated issue.
But one thing is for sure: you won’t stop corruption in poor countries.

It has been reported but not headline news. I think this comes under the category of "not our problem" so we need not dwell on it.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 16-Jun-23 09:20:02

What exactly do you have in mind when you call for ‘an international response to stop the traffickers’? What do you think will stop them tickingbird?

toscalily Fri 16-Jun-23 09:28:30

Just to clarify, that is not my personal opinion. I meant that the UK news media often under report what happens elsewhere. So often you can spot an international news item at night or early morning and later in the day it is never reported.

Oh come on! They can foil terrorists and share intelligence where that’s concerned. They know Albanian traffickers are operating in various countries. It can’t be stopped entirely but cutting off the head of the 🐍 would go a long way.

I read that they were going to Italy.

Either way, still a terrible waste of life.
100 children apparently in the hold too..

I hope we in Europe have the compassion to deal with this collectively now.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 16-Jun-23 09:46:15

I think foiling terrorist attacks is a little higher up the list of priorities.

margauxbordeaux Fri 16-Jun-23 09:53:18

There is an exemplary write up in The Guardian (2 days ago & yesterday).

They were enroute to Italy.

Terribly painful. ALL the children and women died (100) as they were in the hold of the boat.

I understand that the President of Italy and the Lady President of The E.U. amongst other political leaders have been discussing the matter with the Tunisian President.

However, these victims were from Libya ! Not Tunisia.
They were predominately Egyptian, Pakastani and Afghanistani.

Truly terrible.

Maybe you just believe some lives are worth saving more than others. Seeing as we’re currently spending over 5 million a day to house immigrants plus the money given to France it would make more sense to reduce the numbers by targeting the traffickers.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 16-Jun-23 12:34:09

Is money more important than innocent lives taken by terrorists on home soil? 7/7, Manchester Arena, London Bridge etc and the IRA bombings?

westendgirl Fri 16-Jun-23 15:29:04

Surely the lives of innocent refugees matter too , no matter where they are.
I feel that countries working together is vital to find and stamp out these traffikers.
I did read that Sunak's stress on "stopping the boats "could quite easily have led to people in distress rushing to travel earlier.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 16-Jun-23 15:34:42

Rubbish.

choughdancer Fri 16-Jun-23 15:36:59

Some actions to make the traffickers' trade disappear:

Providing safe routes; countries such as the UK taking in more refugees, and providing support to the countries around the areas the people are fleeing from who have taken in the vast majority of refugees; creating an efficient multi-country approach to the ongoing problems of people being forced to leave their homes as a consequence of war, famine; persecution and the effects of global warming.

The EU have returned 82,000 migrants to Libya in the past 6 years.

Germany are considering sending migrants to African countries.

As AI is supposed to be very intelligent, I don’t understand why it isn’t put to work on tracking the money from all these thousands of trafficked people, to find where it goes. This trade could be stopped, and the illegal money be confiscated money. But I can dream.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 16-Jun-23 16:08:57

How would that be done? The refugees would hardly keep a note of the serial numbers on the notes.

I know (didn't know exact number) - but heard interesting discussion in the wake of this - which seemed to be more positive about working together at last for the relief of this terrible suffering.
I will have to ask my husband later who we heard talking about it.

Kim19 Fri 16-Jun-23 16:16:46

Interested as to why women and children were in the hold. Was it supposed to be more sheltered or safer down there?

Grammaretto Fri 16-Jun-23 16:37:04

Kim19 The segregation of the sexes perhaps for strict Moslems?
