Missing Titanic Submarine

Thinking about this could almost cause me to hyperventilate! I would never embark on such a dangerous voyage. I know it’s only supposed to be of short duration (not sure how long) but so risky. I feel the same when I hear of Richard Branson’s plans to offer commercial space flights at some astronomical price.

Would anyone on here take part if money was no object?

I hope this sub and the people on board (one just a teenager) are found safe and well but the signs don’t look good.

5 or 6 very rich men lost in 3,800 metres of water, on a vanity trip.

Hundreds of drowned women and children lying 5,000 metres deep in the Mediterannean, locked in an overcrowded boat, fleeing from misery and poverty.

This.

The rescue mission of course must be done and it doesn't bear thinking about the plight - but our world is a very strange place.

Usernametaken After all, we don’t go and visit the site of a plant crash do we. Must be something very wrong with these people imo.

People visit Auschwitz, the Colosseum in Rome and war cemeteries. The Titanic was a remarkable ship and has the same interest to people as Nelson's 'Victory' at Portsmouth and the original 'Queen' liners when they became tourist sites after they ceased to be working liners.

What is the difference?

Magsymoo The event in the mediterranean that led to such a terrible loss of life was short lived. We were simply told about the event after it happened.

In this case we have an ongoing emergency that is spread over many days. I think if the mediterranean disaster had taken three or four days to happen, the number of posts would be similar. Once everything is resolved, either way, this event will drop off the headlines just as fast as the other disaster did.

Where there’s life there’s hope - that’s my comforting mantra in all situations ….

Callistemon21 Wed 21-Jun-23 21:50:01

It made me feel so sick, posting about it seemed almost gratuitous, Mollygo.

Where's there's life, there's hope.

Mollygo Wed 21-Jun-23 21:45:01

Callistemon21 you could be right. Once you have expressed horror at the death of those on the boat including the children and queried the actions of the coast guard, there’s not much left to say. Those children are dead.
For me, posting about this submersible is like expressing a hope that those on board will survive.

Usernametaken, I’m relieved the majority of contributors are expressing compassion for the five humans who are in such desperate need of rescue.
I found your post cruel

I am beginning that compassion has a limit for some people.

Perhaps posters didn't contribute to the thread about the boat in the Mediterranean because, as grandparents, the thought of those young children in the water was just too horrifying and sickening. It was too late for them 😥

There’s no point in being able to open it from the inside when you’re so far beneath the surface. In fact I’d guess it’s safer not to be able to - someone panicking would be able to kill the rest, like opening a plane door.

Very true.

I remember being in a row of seats on an aeroplane with the emergency door; our 12 year old was next to the door so the air crew moved her and put a man next to the door. However, he was a panicker and kept scrabbling at the door, moaning and it was quite frightening. They moved him away and moved DH to his seat.

This post has attracted 150+ comments, the previous GN thread about the migrant boat disaster attracted 31.
The gist of that thread was that the story wasn’t headline news and perhaps should have been, but that idea didn’t attract much support. This morning the sub. story headlined in practically every newspaper. Are some human beings lives more valuable than others?

The thoughts of this makes me shudder can't think of anything worse for those poor people. Hope they do find them, have until 12 noon Thursday I believe, before 02 runs out.
No amount of money would persuade me to go under the North Atlantic in a sub. Personally think that the grave that is Titanic, should be left in peace.

Absolutely, agree with every word.

Usernametaken Wed 21-Jun-23 19:19:47

Why would anyone want to go and gawp at a ship that sank over 100 years ago where so many poor souls lost their lives.

After all, we don’t go and visit the site of a plant crash do we. Must be something very wrong with these people imo.

I'm wondering if anyone here has the same opinion about 'visiting graves' when it comes to the pyramids in Egypt which is what they were built for.

They've been stripped of their contents including the remains of the dead, many having been put on public display.

I don't think it matters in the slightest why these poor men who are trapped are in this horrific position or how wealthy they are. We can't begin to imagine what they and their family and friends are going through.

Indeed.

Cemetery in Normandy, mass graves at Dacau, Soldau, Auschwitz. The Honopu Valley, the Arizona. Gallipoli. Long sad list.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 21-Jun-23 19:08:00

I will continue to hold these five people in my prayers along with their family and loved ones.

rafichagran Wed 21-Jun-23 19:05:26

I am watching this and hope for a good outcome. I am not interested in hearing about how much money these people have paid for this trip, I just want them to get out alive. These people are human beings.

I saw footage on the news of one of the people onboard using a control system that just looked like the sort of thing you use to play on a computer game with. It looked so amateurish. I keep trying not to think of it, but when I do I start to panic. Surely there was a danger that the submersible could have got trapped in the wreckage even if everything had gone smoothly?

The US navy have been using the Xbox 360 controller on their submarines since 2017.

Amazing isn't it? A pilot on one of the US space shuttles explained his early missions into space using similar to gaming 64 systems.

It seems communications they had for this submersible failed.

Redhead56 Wed 21-Jun-23 18:49:49

Well said the whole situation is very hard to comprehend. Peoples need to see a something in such a dangerous position and the risks involved doing so.

Blondiescot Wed 21-Jun-23 18:44:54

Indeed, Smileless2012, you could make the same argument about visiting many places around the world - such as the killing fields in Cambodia, concentration camps and so on. And at this present time, it really doesn't matter why they went - we should be focusing on the awful plight in which they now find themselves, and on the horrendous situation being faced by their loved ones.

I would never have taken part even if I had the funds. Just reading about the depth of the water makes me feel panicky. They knew the risks but wouldn’t have expected the worse to happen. Its an awful situation for them and their families. Let’s hope they are found in time.
I do think it’s about time the Titanic and all of those poor souls that went down with her were left in peace now.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 21-Jun-23 17:34:22

Rob Ballard always used a communication cable I believe.

M0nica Wed 21-Jun-23 17:30:52

gee1jay* they did have a means of communication, but it has failed. This was the first sign there was a problem.

There are similar problems with having any kind of cable or chain going from the machine to the mother ship. The chain or rope would be so heavy because of its immense length, it would be too heavy for the inherent strength of the materials it was made of that it would break.

The problem with a machine like this that is going so deep into the sea is that the water pressure 4 thousands of metres under the sea is well over 5,500 lbs per square INCH. At sea level it is 15lbs per inch. This mean not only do the walls of the vehicle need to be incredibly thick but anything light, like sonar beacons attached to the outside would just crush. If in strengthened lockers, they would crush on release.

mrsgreenfingers56 Wed 21-Jun-23 17:14:41

Never mind all the in's and out's on this, we have human life at risk here and let's hope they can be found, surely that is the most important thing at the end of the day.

But personally I wouldn't have gone.
