Fawcett Society's Victory for Women

The Fawcett Society is today celebrating its victory in having the Sun and Jeremy Clarkson judged guilty of misogyny by the Independent Press Standards Organisation. This is the first ever judgement that has condemned sexism in the media. The Sun will have to print a front page apology. The article of course was his rant about Meghan Duchess of Sussex. This is great and momentous victory for women www.fawcettsociety.org.uk/news/fawcett-complaint-about-clarkson-column-upheld-on-basis-of-sexism

Yes, and it's also a big leap forward in the history of civilised culture.

A great and momentous victory for women? Twaddle. He was rude about her (though I did find his piece amusing). End of.

Anniebach Sat 01-Jul-23 16:02:53

Is Meg suing ?

AGAA4 Sat 01-Jul-23 16:10:46

Not a fan of Meghan but what he said was just plain nasty. Sexist? Probably but it came across as being indecent and bullying.

Or, as Fraser Nelson puts it:

"The milestone is in the weakening of press freedom.

Until now, opinion pieces have been an issue between a paper and its readers. Ipso has never ruled on taste, etc. It rejected third party complaints on principle. In breaking its own rule to nobble Clarkson, Ipso has shown it can be blown by Twitterstorms and political interference."

Sexist, spiteful, malicious, yes definnitely indecent, glad to hear the news.
Clarkeson is a nasty piece of work, even his wife admits he can be very misogynist. Point is, it may not be a huge example GSM but imo we shouldn't give men the space to do this to women.

Yes, it was nasty but that isn't the most important thing at stake here.

Meg's lawyers are probably getting their abacus set up as we speak. grin

Why anyone should care about the opinion of someone as deeply unpleasant as Clarkson has always been a mystery to me. He appears to have the mind of a rather disturbed arrested adolescent. So does this mean that he and the Sun will now be hit for damages? No trivial sum, I hope...

The journalist and former Top Gear presenter caused uproar after writing that he dreamt of the day when Meghan was “made to parade naked through the streets of every town in Britain while the crowds chant, ‘Shame!’ and throw lumps of excrement at her.”

Did you really find this amusing?

Bodach Sat 01-Jul-23 16:37:49

Clarkson was referencing an episode of the popular TV series "Game of Thrones', in which a pretty odious aristocrat (mother and manipulator of the Boy King) is forced by a Cult leader to undergo this ordeal. It was a joke, for goodness sake. OK, a joke in bad taste, but no-one in their right mind could surely have believed that he was seriously advocating such a fate for Meghan. And I cannot see what is specifically misogynistic about it; he could well have said the same about Harry.

Blossoming Sat 01-Jul-23 16:38:02

That piece was disgusting. They deserve censure.

Vintagenonna Sat 01-Jul-23 16:38:32

Between him being allowed to publish and self-hating Sarah Vine of the Daily Mail talking about being sexually groped in public and deciding to treat it as 'a bit of fun' it isn't really such a shock that so many girls seem to be bailing out of identifying as female.

Vintagenonna Sat 01-Jul-23 16:42:05

Bodach, can I salute your good nature. To see the joke in that column shows you have a well-spring of kindness that is rare in the extreme. Perhaps we all should try to learn from this.

GSM We all know you have a legal background, you must therefore know about landmark rulings, when a judgement is made which will affect future actions. This is one such ruling. IPSO has never before ruled that an article in the press is misogynistic and sexist. Now you may have found it amusing, but for thousands of women, who experience domestic abuse the publication of such stuff only reinforces and gives value to the views of their abusers. The case was brought by the Fawcett Society, who have campaigned for women for over 100 years, and the WILDE Foundation, who work to support and empower women who suffer domestic abuse. Obviously the article just amused you, for other women it had much more harmful results.

For some it is a joke, for other women it is how man thinks they should be treated.

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 01-Jul-23 16:51:30

I agree Bodach. I have never been what most here would call a feminist. Probably because I spent my working life in what was a men’s world and got on with them perfectly well, doing the same job and neither expecting nor getting special treatment. I tend to get on better with men than women.

And yes, I find Clarkson amusing.

AGAA4 Sat 01-Jul-23 16:56:00

It is a victory but there is a long way to go to stop the abuse of women.

I'm actually gobsmacked that someone can't recognise that there are men out there who are not nice men, not men they would get on well with, and men who regard the writings of people like Clarkson as justification for violence against women.
Be grateful you haven't encountered them, but try to understand that they do exist. (And you wouldn't "get on" with them )

VioletSky Sat 01-Jul-23 16:57:47

Good news!

This is a massive victory

Now we just need to work on newspapers expressing any type of discrimination getting penalized and held to account. It's so incredibly damaging

AGAA4 Sat 01-Jul-23 17:00:54

GSM an ideal world with men and women respecting each other as you have found in your employment is sadly not the case for many women.

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 01-Jul-23 17:04:43

I’m not a fool Glorianny. I have encountered deeply unpleasant men and was married to one for 23 years. It hasn’t turned me into a crowing feminist. I take people as I find them.

eazybee Sat 01-Jul-23 18:15:30

The piece was crude, lewd and rude.
But a great victory for women? Oh dear.

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 01-Jul-23 18:19:56

You know, I’m not surprised to hear men say they’re afraid to get in a lift with a woman.
