I know the last thread was taken down at the op’s request - but if anyone wants to continue discussing this major news item I’ve started this one.

I didn’t have babysitters when my daughters were 17 yet it’s against the law to leave a child alone

Can you imagine if you were a BBC presenter and was on holiday.
So didn't appear on TV everyone will think it's you.

Nahil Arthanayake of Radio 5 tweeted to explain that he was off air this week because he was at Wimbledon

Casdon Mon 10-Jul-23 09:48:24

Let’s be honest, we know virtually nothing. It’s all very well blaming the BBC, blaming the mother, blaming the presenter. Actually, so far we don’t know what information the BBC initially received or what they did with it, we don’t know whether the mother’s motives were what she says they were, and we don’t know whether the presenter believed the young person was over 18, how they met them, whether they were one of many people the young person was potentially selling services to, whether they were being blackmailed - it’s all speculation and gossip. All we actually know is that a presenter has been suspended pending further investigation.
The Sun should have gone to the police, and used their powers directly with the BBC to force action in my opinion if they believed the mother and had the young person’s permission, not indulged in irresponsible journalism that will destroy lives.

Yes its awful for innocent people who are having their names bandied about.

FannyCornforth Mon 10-Jul-23 09:52:32

GrannyGravy yes, re The Sun and Sam Fox.
Terry Christian tweeted this

Good post Casdon and yes exactly mistakes all round

DiamondLily Mon 10-Jul-23 09:55:47

I suppose it was different times then.

Bill Wyman, of the Stones openly had a relationship with Mandy Smith, when she was 13/14. I think in the 1980's?

Nothing much was said - nowadays, rightly, all hell would break loose.😗

I believe the matter has now been reported to the police, it’s best to wait until a statement is issued imho.

We don't have an identified perpetrator to focus on, so let's have a go at the alleged victim's Mother instead, despite the fact that we know nothing about the circumstances in which she felt it appropriate to contact the media, and that she must already be hurting so much. Sad.

Wow, interesting "spin".

We don't have any verified information other than the Sun reported on a "Story" told to them.

We have no more facts than that.

FannyCornforth Mon 10-Jul-23 09:58:17

Yes, that was unbelievably awful re Wyman.
And her mother had a relationship with Wyman’s son.
I believe that Mandy Smith later had a nervous breakdown.
I know that she had very bad anorexia

What a shameful circus. I’ll leave my pitchfork in the shed till I know for certain who, if anyone, to aim it at. Which would probably be only after a fair trial in a court of law.

Tv channels know who it is now but are not allowed to say. Just heard this on TV.

FannyCornforth Mon 10-Jul-23 10:02:03

The mother reported the issue to the BBC in May.
It (the BBC) seems to be investigating now due to the report in The Sun.

Anniebach Mon 10-Jul-23 10:09:28

Did the mother or son inform the Sun of the telephone call, they certainly don’t contact the police

DaisyAnneReturns Mon 10-Jul-23 10:18:42

Gossip ruins lives and this thread is about, and adding to, gossip.

I do wish GN would close this thread down.

The proper place for the statements to be made is a police station.

nanna8 Mon 10-Jul-23 10:19:36

Very odd. Why on earth would you ring the Sun, of all papers? Not going to go there ….

Anniebach Mon 10-Jul-23 10:20:03

Who here has made a statement?

BlueBelle Mon 10-Jul-23 10:21:06

*Yes, that was unbelievably awful re Wyman.

I believe that Mandy Smith later had a nervous breakdown.
I know that she had very bad anorexia*
….and not forgetting Jerry Lee Lewis married his 13 year old cousin very different times

Anniebach Mon 10-Jul-23 10:28:54

Not all is different, a 17 year old child! can join the army and train to kill

DaisyAnneReturns Mon 10-Jul-23 10:31:41

Anniebach

You can stop feeling guilty Annie.

There's no legal age a child can be left home alone, but it’s against the law to leave a child alone if it puts them at risk. Every child matures differently, so it would be almost impossible to have a "one size fits all" law. (NSPCC)

nanna8 Mon 10-Jul-23 10:35:37

They have actually named someone online here but, not knowing the man, it means nothing to me and anyway who knows if they are right or if it is just someone who doesn’t like him?

Wyllow3 Mon 10-Jul-23 10:53:55

What Casdon says.

However, most of the discussion above has not been prurient but looking at the law, social media, consequences of actions, protection, concern, on a topic of broad interest to all,

Which is why I've followed it.

When you go public in the way the Mum did, she is inevitably opening the door to speculation about their family life.

I'm very angry with the Sun but I shouldn't be surprised.
