Johnson in contempt

He has failed to hand over his mobile phone.

I hope the court follows up swiftly on this - the law must apply to Johnson just as it does for us all.

Why do they want his phone ? Just curious. I wouldn’t want to hand mine over, either. Is it a police state there now then ?

nanna8- you're not the ( former, disgraced) PM ....are you?

Returning to the point: what a surprise. The man lies like most of breathe, and thinks he is an exception to all rules. I hope the courts demonstrate that nobody is above the law.

Oreo Tue 11-Jul-23 08:18:13

Never mind ‘returning to the point’!
How bloody rude of you Siope and * chocolatelovinggran*
Not everybody knows all the ins and out of British politics, especially those grans in other countries.
nana8 he promised to hand over his phone for inquiries and now he hasn’t done tho may still do so.

rosie1959 Tue 11-Jul-23 08:21:18

There is some security problems with this phone apparently. Since when did the powers that be actually need the device to find out what’s on it just the number.
Probably not up to Boris Johnson

Oreo Tue 11-Jul-23 08:35:12

You’re right rosie59 they don’t need the actual phone, just the number, maybe that’s what has been asked for ( the number) tho that would be a security breach maybe?

Oldbat1 Tue 11-Jul-23 08:59:26

BJ seems as per usual to believe he is above the law. Obviously he has lots to hide. Do you think one of us could refuse to hand over our phones in such a situation?

This is a far more important matter than the distracting non story about the BBC presenter. Strange coincidence that Murdoch gets that all over the media while his buddies Osborne and Johnson have more serious things going on. 🤔 I hope Johnson gets charged with contempt of court.

DiamondLily Tue 11-Jul-23 09:38:46

He changed his phone, half way through Covid, due to his number being posted online.

Officials said that the phone had been "mislaid".🙄

I don't know if they're talking about the first phone or the second.

But, both should be found and handed over - they were work phones.

Handy that right wing media are managing to bury this and Osbourne email saga under the BBC story.🙄

Callistemon21 Tue 11-Jul-23 10:34:21

Very rude indeed siope

nanna8 sounded curious.

halfpint1 Tue 11-Jul-23 10:38:08

Maybe nana8 was being sarcastic. Living in another country doesn't stop you knowing the system in another

NotSpaghetti Tue 11-Jul-23 10:38:30

I think it's the first phone actually as the second was "afterwards" so the first is the one likely to have been the important one.

I seem to think he was "told" not to use the 1st again in case of a security breach.
He said it was "dangerous" to switch it on.
Apparently.

Freya5 Tue 11-Jul-23 10:48:05

Siope

I believe they need the phone because end-to-end encryption prevents them reading the messages otherwise - that’s why various governments keep trying to ban it.

(Surprised some right-wingers are happy for the UK to be called a police state. Not at all sorry that I’m not)

That surprises me, more often than not it's those on the left that call us a police state.

I remember this breaking, here’s the commentary from the Guardian.

Perhaps Wilf dropped it down the toilet.

The person has to be under arrest or the police must obtain a warrant before they can legally seize someone's mobile phone.

I think the phone has faked its own death and is living in sin beneath the North Sea with Rebekah Vardy’s agent’s phone. Can we drain the North Sea?

Perhaps Dilyn buried it in the garden.

It's barely a month since the issue of Johnson's old phone was discussed in this thread.

www.gransnet.com/forums/news_and_politics/1324611-Has-the-Cabinet-Office-complied-with-Heather-Hallett-s-request?pg=3

I'm surprised that regular posters on this forum, whatever country they may be living in, have forgotten already...

Casdon Tue 11-Jul-23 11:37:56

That was over 100 threads on the News and Politics section ago MaizeD, so it’s hardly surprising people forget. There’s so much news and politics to grab the headlines on a daily basis at the moment.

But surely one could retain enough to know that there was something dodgy about Johnson's phone and that there was a ? over whether it would be released?

And I have a shocking memory...

nanna8 Tue 11-Jul-23 12:28:03

I didn’t know they could actually take a person’s phone off them . Anyway, wouldn’t he just destroy it if that was the case? I’ve never heard of that except when you actually go into jail and they take the possessions you have on you.

nanna8 Tue 11-Jul-23 12:31:46

I didn’t read the rude comment and I’m glad. Can’t imagine why someone would find my comment offensive but still takes all sorts.
