Malnutrition in England

(334 Posts)

From 2022 to April 2023, 10,896 NHS patients — including 312 children — were hospitalised with the condition in England, as a result of the crises in the cost of living.

Scurvy and rickets have returned that were so prevalent in Victorian Britain, which were recognises diseases of poverty.

Surely there must now be a case for free school meals and midday milk?

PS. I don't have stroppy attitude!!! I've been diabetic for 30 years and I control it by avoiding carbs. It's not some faddy diet - it's a way of eating to keep me well.

I think ronib was talking about her dad, not you.

I haven't tried sweet polenta, but I do like it savoury.

ronib Fri 14-Jul-23 21:03:54

Doodledog yes you are right - I was talking about my dad.

We need energy (carbs) to move, run, dog walk, to live.

However, others may feel differently and do as they wish or their body prefers - I'm not advocating FOR any particular foods, I merely said what we love and eat quite often. I love carbs, I exercise.

^I assume we all eat polenta, no?^

Yuck no, it is truly disgusting stuff! I'm also a diabetic so carbs are not for me in great quantities. Carbs turn to sugars so unless I am looking to a slow suicide, I don't want them.

Same here! I get nearly all my carbs from veg and dairy - and I keep my blood glucose under control.

One of the reasons there's an obesity crisis is because cheaper foods tend to be carb-rich (and therefore energy/calorie dense), without providing other essential nutrients.

Doodledog Jamie Oliver was serving polenta chips in his upmarket restaurants for awhile. They were great.

Ohhhh fun, I'll look for a recipe! Thanks.

No Norah that's not what diabetics should eat. They need to limit carbs.

Protein and fat also provide energy.

That's not an opinion - it's a fact. I'm well aware of what you eat - you love telling everybody about it, but maybe you should accept that other people aren't like you. I'd die an early death if I ate what you do.

PS. I exercise too.

ronib Fri 14-Jul-23 21:26:51

Just to be clear polenta certainly didn’t make my dad fat. He maintained a perfect bmi all his very long life.

As do we have slim weight.

However, I was told, another thread, I may not say such!

You prompted me grin.

Norah Fri 14-Jul-23 21:39:10

ronib, Thank you for reminding us of cheap carb - polenta.

I'm not diabetic, this thread is not about me or our diet. But we do love love my polenta, we can exercise it back off! smile

I'm beginning to think I should buy shares in firms that make polenta.

I wouldn't risk the silver - so far I think there are four of us who like it grin. I doubt your shares would hit the roof any time soon. Market it as a weaning product for vegetarian children, though, and who knows. . .

Callistemon21 Fri 14-Jul-23 22:18:02

😁

I shall try it as an alternative to porridge. Is it anything like semolina?
I remember semolina pudding at school.

Yes. Much the same, slightly bigger bits by which brand one buys.

No particular flavour, like semolina -- just neutral corn not wheat.

Our daughters often make it savoury as they eat cheese, we make it sweet and use almond milk etc (as I said prior). GC and GGC Love!

I've not tried fruit zest - and after this batch of posts I believe I'll add chopped nuts and some sort of fruit zests this weekend.

Tesco doesn't sell it 😯

Waitrose does so will have to put it on the list for another time.

We used to give it to the residents who couldn't chew when I worked in an old people's home in Germany.

I've still got most of me teeth 😁
I listened to Pam Ayres.

Callistemon21 Fri 14-Jul-23 22:48:30

Well, I'll try most things.

Apart from tapioca, frogs' legs and eels. And tripe.

😂😂

I can promise it is nicer than tripe. I can't speak about eels, I'm afraid.

I’m not an ancient Roman either.

growstuff go to the top of the class. You really made me laugh with that comment grin
But I thought we all, or mostly all, knew growstuff is a diabetic so she’s hardly going to wax lyrical about the benefits of eating polenta which is pure carb is she? She doesn’t like it and she can’t eat it so why keep suggesting recipes and ways she can eat it.
I agree with her anyway as I don’t like the stuff either, but each to their own, those who like it and can eat it go ahead, and those who can’t or don’t like it will avoid it.

MibsXX Fri 14-Jul-23 23:15:37

we work, low wages, rent and everything soared in last two years, wages actually went down, both bosses answer to forced wage rise was to offer less hours. I CAN cook, just cannot afford to anymore not properly. Electricity, and real from scratch food items are bloody expensive now. we survive on alternating sandwiches one day, a bowl of p[orridge the next, maybe once or twice a week I actually manage to find a bargain and make a proper dinner. We're all losing weight and feeling very low on energy and health. Every time I visit the shop prices have gone up again, its almost daily now

maddyone Fri 14-Jul-23 23:17:02

norah diabetics can’t get half their calories from carbs, they have to strictly regulate how much carb they eat. If they exercise more than usual they may have to up their carbs a bit, but their blood tests will let them know whether to add carb or reduce carb. Mainly I think they avoid carbs and get their calories from other food groups.

Doodledog Fri 14-Jul-23 23:19:59

I don't think anyone recommended it specifically to growstuff, maddie. ronib just mentioned that her father ate it, and *Norah picked up on it as a general comment.

Mibbs, that is an awful situation to be in. I don't know what to say, but I hope things get better very soon.
