I couldn’t believe this. Tell me it isn’t true. Back to the 18 th century.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 18-Jul-23 16:27:49

Well I’m glad it has been passed GG. Something has to be done. However the appeal has still to be heard.

Yes welbeck, if they are permitted to work - or if they disappear - they are prime candidates for slavery,

GrannyGravy13 Tue 18-Jul-23 16:33:28

Sky News is currently reporting that two Cruise Ships which were to be used to house refugees have been refused docking permission (one in Liverpool and one in Scotland, didn’t catch the Port) today, so are returning to whence they came.

The UN refugee agency is concerned about the profound impact on human rights and the international refugee protection system.
It states the Illegal Migration Bill is at variance with the country’s obligations under international human rights and refugee law.

I’m unhappy about hotels as well. No pleasing me as I do agree, we need to know who and where asylum seekers are.

They just are not getting on with the processing system.

The barge is not ideal at all, Rwanda is a shocking idea.

All the £millions that is spent should have been spent on granting the HO more money to train assessors, get a better system up and running then people will be allowed to work or, if they fail, deported, instead of languishing in hotels and centres.

Yes!

This, in spades.

How can they be deported when they have no Id's, Passports anything to identify where they actually come from.

And more, bigger spades

The system is demonstrably worse since the UK left the EU, because we no longer have access to the Eurodac fingerprinting ID system.

DiamondLily Tue 18-Jul-23 18:11:47

To be fair, they will be allowed to get off of the ship and go where they like.

The ship is just for eating/sleeping.

Not exactly slavery.🙂

Sago

Why on earth should we be made to feel guilty about due diligence?

Many of these men are deliberately arriving without papers, knowing the processing can take months, they are fed, housed, clothed and then disappear.

Who and where are they?

Over 30 absconded in a week from a facility near us.

If they are to be housed on this barge until we know who they are then I think it’s an excellent idea.

I've heard of this Sago from a friend who has the same in her village. They were put in a hotel away from the village and the nearby town and made a nuisance of themselves wandering around with nothing to do. Some were complaining about the facilities, which ordinary people without homes would have been pleased to stay in.
As you say when they disappear where do they go and who monitors their movements?
It must be awful if the conditions in your own country are so bad you feel you have to leave. They need to be processed as soon as possible to sort the genuine ones out.
A barge isn't as dangerous as what the Greeks appear to have done.

Meanwhile, in Dorset, it is down to volunteers to provide accommodation on converted buses for rough sleepers.

There is a great deal of concern about the floating barge which will be moored close to Portland and there will be regular access to shore. There is little to do there, and extremely limited employment opportunities. Also very few police.
Interesting to see all the local people who were so in favour of migrants being allowed in without check are suddenly realising the seriousness of the situation when it appears on their doorstep, or rather their quay.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 18-Jul-23 18:24:51

It does focus minds when it’s on your doorstep eazybee.

Nicenanny3 Tue 18-Jul-23 18:25:22

450 illegals arrived today nearly one barge full.

Well, they, like residents in other areas, were fine with it all while it only affected places like Dover and London.

They don't seem quite so keen if it's going to affect their areas.😗

Urmstongran Tue 18-Jul-23 18:30:14

Apparently the migrants will be ‘encouraged’ to be back on board by 11pm. But they cannot be forced as that’s against their human rights. After a day out in Weymouth town centre, how many young men that we know nothing at all about, will disappear into the ether?

I find it very worrying.

There are a lot of errors in your post eazy

DiamondLily Tue 18-Jul-23 18:32:34

Well, it is worrying - if they think they might be deported, to wherever, many will just disappear.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 18-Jul-23 18:34:32

This barge represents everything that is wrong with the Tory immigration policy.

They have lost control and are simply throwing money at the issue making no sense whatsoever.

DiamondLily Tue 18-Jul-23 18:40:02

Having a resident NHS facility, with instant access to medics, is more than most of us have now:

Docked at one of the south coasts top holiday spots just as the schools break up for their 6 week break too. What could possibly go wrong?

Riverwalk Tue 18-Jul-23 18:51:22

I recently heard either on Radio 4 or Times Radio, some extraordinary statistics, it was something like in 2018 there were around 400 arrivals by small boats in the whole year - so it was an easily manageable number that could have been dealt with.

Unfortunately the Tory Party have spent the time since having leadership contests and non-stop internal squabbles - is it any wonder that around 98,000 have arrived since then!

How many of those have had their applications dealt with or are still languishing in the system, who knows.

Anything and everything.

We have family within a couple of miles,” of Weymouth they will all be visiting the relatives this year as opposed to us visiting them.

Urmstongran Tue 18-Jul-23 18:55:43

Back in the day though Riverwalk small boats weren’t the journey of choice so much. It was running and jumping onto container lorries at Sangatte camp in the dead of night.
