Apart from any betting, do you actually support Trump, MerylStreep?
Good Morning Thursday 7th May 2026
Project Freedom.. deserves its own thread!

"Donald Trump has said he expects to be arrested by a federal inquiry into the US Capitol riot and efforts to challenge the 2020 election results."
Is he going to be called to account for this at last?
Apart from any betting, do you actually support Trump, MerylStreep?
There is an Americast Podcast on BBC Sounds and I believe they are due to drop another one this evening.
How can this be happening? How come his supporters are happy that the donated campaign money is being used as legal fees?

There will be a civil war in that country in the not too distant future. Trump has a lot of supporters who sincerely believe he has been unfairly ‘stitched up’. Scary bunch.
I can guarantee there will not be a civil war. There are more sensible people and they will show their presence as needed.
25Avalon Have you asked the people you know who have degrees and no jobs if they regret doing their degrees?
I expect they don't!
Good to know Syracute and hope you are right. You live in the USA so are more in touch than we are. We only know what we hear on the news. I just wish the populace would push for more representative, younger and saner leaders!
I can remember breathing a sigh of relief when he got voted out, thinking that social media would calm down and we wouldn’t be subjected to such idiocy and nonsense - and so it proved.
I couldn’t stand all that again - day after day of living in some second rate news outlet with all the accompanying lunacy.
I realise now why I can’t stand outlets like GBNews and DM - and I suspect like Fox News - they are all of a piece.
But let’s be optimistic and hope due process is followed and he is convicted.

Yes, I always say to my son that I am amazed, with the vast amount of political talent that must exist out there, the voters will probably end up having to choose (again), between Biden and Trump.
Apparently , with electoral colleges, the finances needed, and the system it's more complicated than that.
Our system might not be brilliant, but I'm glad we have it, some days.🙂
Not knowing enough about US politics, I can't understand why Biden is a shoe in for a candidate. He IS too old. there must be some great alternatives, surely?
Europe’s security cannot rest on the whims of the U.S. electorate
(French lawmaker Benjamin Haddad, a member of Macron’s Renaissance party)
“I believe Europeans are not taking seriously enough the probability of a Trump reelection,” Haddad told POLITICO. “Indictments, regardless of whether justified from a legal standpoint, clearly strengthen him for the Republican primary. And he’s neck and neck with Biden in the general election polls. At this point, it seems like a 50-50 scenario".

I wonder just how many people, in how many countries, have said that in the past.

Absolutely. Europe’s security will be under severe threat, particularly if he no longer supports Ukraine as he threatening to do.
Europe including the U.K. needs to work out a strong and unified strategy pdq in the event of Trumps presidency.

There may be, but the opinion is that he is the only one who can beat Trump.
I have no idea who are the possible alternatives. Harrison doesn’t appear to have made much impression.

I could be the same as here - very little choice?

It's News Agents USA - most recent episode "Has the Republican party become 'a cult'?
It covers Biden getting "in" on Hunter Biden's phone calls too.
The 43% thing - where Trump and Biden are tied still means that to be a winner they need to persuade other voters to go with them. I think those voters would find it very hard to vote for Trump.
The Washington Post has reported that Biden did well in the recent mid-terms because Biden appealed to the moderate Republicans, arguing with some success that Trump is a threat to USA democracy.
I would hope that as the various trials revel Trumps’ misdemeanours , this will gain traction and moderate Republicans will turn away. Of course there is a core support that as Trump recognised the he “could kill someone and still be supported” or words to that affect. But Biden is not speaking to these no-hopers but to the more moderate/rational wing of the Republican Party.
I read this too Whitewavemark2
I do think it would be better to have someone younger running but obviously no-one suitable as yet.
This is a quote from The New Statesman that gives a little glow of hope.
One in four Republican voters say (New York Times) they are "not open to Donald Trump" as the party's nominee, with three in ten of these voters saying they would vote for Joe Biden over Trump in next years presidential election. In other words, 7% of Republican voters say they will vote Democrat next year (think Republicans like Liz Cheney). That is huge - enough to decide '24 if it holds true.
If only the Republicans could reject Rump and chose LIz Cheney!
The Trump caravan continues to roll.
This week comes the 4th indictment which comes from a recorded phone call Trump made to a Republican official during the election telling him to “find” nearly 12k votes to “prove” he’d won Georgia. Trump will never ever accept that he is wrong or lost.
All power to the Republican who kept true to his oath and reported Trump.
Trump is also instructing his lawyers to Petition to remove and replace the judge with someone more sympathetic (I.E. a Republican appointed)judge and to get the case tried in a more sympathetic state. Which to me suggests that American justice is entirely dependent on the state and judge.
As an aside he has apparently been tweeting that the USA women lost the soccer game because they are too “woke”😄😄😄😄😄

Doesn't it count as amazing that people like us are cheering on Mike Pence, a right wing Republican who rejects the theory of evolution?
Mike Pence at least had the gumption to stand up to Trump's appeal for him to over-rule the election result, showing that even right wing Republicans still have some sense of right and wrong.
