Can’t believe am thinking this- apparently we’re not .. global warming but 🥵

Bea65 Thu 27-Jul-23 18:23:07

Meteorologists are saying we’re above the average temperatures in UK but why say Boiling?

Shrub Thu 27-Jul-23 19:22:44

It’s Global boiling not UK boiling!

Oreo Thu 27-Jul-23 20:56:17

Below July temps here💦and constant rain.

Gillycats Fri 28-Jul-23 00:10:39

I’m staying in Wisconsin this week and was shocked at the fog caused by the Canadian wildfires. The sun was a really funny colour too. Fortunately it seems to have lifted at the moment but apparently it was terrible. Very worrying!

When it's so blindingly obvious the earth is in trouble down to us, why are we doing so little to save it? To paraphrase what Greta said, it's not just up to us individuals, we're not the experts, we need those in charge to find a way to mitigate the worst and exercise some leadership. And Uxbridge went to the Tories because people don't want the inconvenience of ulez?

maddyone Sun 30-Jul-23 11:41:40

It’s not above average temperatures here on the south coast today, it’s barely 18 degrees and damp.

maddyone Sun 30-Jul-23 11:43:22

ULEZ isn’t an inconvenience to richer people, just to the poorer people who can’t afford to buy a newer car.

Authoress Sun 30-Jul-23 11:51:25

ULEZ is essential to lower pollution and stop people suffering asthma and chest problems. No doubt in the science. The issue is the cynical use of it by the Tories as a political football...

And as for "global boiling" - I watched people FLYING OUT ON HOLIDAY to places like Rhodes, and wondered what on earth they don't understand about carbon footprint?!

We need to do all we can, and insist our chocolate-teapot politicians do too!

silvercollie Sun 30-Jul-23 11:57:02

Jess 20. Cannot agree that it is all down to us. The earth has been changing climates for millennia.
At one time you could ice skate on the River Thames and Walnuts grew near Hadrians Wall. Neither of those phenomena are happening at the moment.
Climate change has always been.

maddyone Sun 30-Jul-23 11:57:26

Do you live in the ULEZ area Authoress?

Foxygloves Sun 30-Jul-23 12:01:06

Hear, hear.
Livelihoods can depend on being able to drive in a ULEZ - and what about care workers etc whose incomes are not likely to stretch to a ULEZ compliant vehicle- even second hand.
Exceptions must be made - why is nobody agitating on their behalf?

Romola Sun 30-Jul-23 12:06:10

This is absolutely THE most important issue confronting the world. Much of the south is already uninhabitable for humans, there is already pressure on places like the UK which will only increase as people flee from heat and poverty.
We need a United Nations Global Warming Organistion so that ALL nations can co-operate to try to cope with the terrible situations which are already arising from global boiling.

Grammaretto Sun 30-Jul-23 12:08:30

Very few people are prepared to have their habits. Do you know any?
The people who took 6 holidays a year are still taking 6 holidays a year

grandtanteJE65 Sun 30-Jul-23 12:09:03

Those of us who are serious about trying to prevent global warming continuing are doing what we can, by recycling, changing utility companies to those who are using solar and wind energy, have stopped driving a car and look very carefully at how far our food has travelled from wherever it was produced to the shop where we buy and how the food was produced.

We are also voting for politicians or parties who are trying to change things in the right direction.

And trying to influence friends and neighbours who find it "too difficult" to sort their rubbish properly. It is not reallly hard to work out what goes into which side of the three bins provided. It is uphill work, but then changing attitudes always is.

I bought a pair of new sandals last summer, apart from them, all my shoes, boots and clothes are from charity shops. Apart from that we have only bought things like new brake shoes and chains for our bikes, so our conscience is fairly clear.

In order to save the planet, we need to change our lifestyle quite drastically and take it account what doing so will do to the world's economic and financial systems!

Trurider1 Sun 30-Jul-23 12:19:10

Absolutely NOBODY is actually looking at the future. If BRITAIN did not exist then there would be NO CHANGE to CO'2 Levels. BRITAIN hardly contributes anything. The Third World DOES. It produces most of it. REALITY is that if things are unchanged in the next 25 years the World Population will have FALLEN by one Seventh that is ONE BILLION. China's one Child Policy has meant an aged population and LESS Chinese. Russia and Europe have the same issue. BUT NOBODY is taking that into consideration. Time for joined up thinking and not knee jerk reastions.

Fleurpepper Sun 30-Jul-23 12:38:11

And what is your joined up thinking to solve this?

Basically, because China and other countries cause most of it = we do nothing at all, and wait for our grandchildren's world to boil over.

How do you think that the U.K. can influence the main polluters Fleurpepper ? You have repeatedly posted that the U.K. is diminished on the world stage.

According to Google the U.K. is accountable for less than 1% of global CO2 emissions.

MerylStreep Sun 30-Jul-23 12:49:51

How many times does it have to be said.
It’s the speed at which the earth is heating up that is the problem
But carry on thinking that but don’t be surprised when some very nasty viruses are are released from the permafrost now melting in Siberia.

Urmstongran Sun 30-Jul-23 12:51:26

We produce a tiny amount of carbon footprint. Developing countries (India, China) want what we did in our Industrial Revolution. It’s their turn now is how they must see it. Trouble is, their emissions dwarf what we produced. Their land mass and populations are huge.

I don’t know the answer but I agree, ULEZ won’t affect the well off in this country. Just the care workers, the supermarket workers etc.

Before long we will look around and the UK will look like the ‘Hunger Games’ have arrived. Or ‘Rollerball’ with James Caan back in the day. Scary stuff but I honestly believe this is what’s coming down the track. More than Haves and Have Nots. The 1% Elites will take charge, flaunt their wealth (private jets, tycoon sized super yachts anyone? no EasyJet for them!) as the rules don’t apply to them. Wealth insulates them from the realities the little people (us, our grandchildren) are facing.

MerylStreep Sun 30-Jul-23 12:54:34

Nothing will seriously happen until the warming affects the conglomerates that are causing it.
As it stands they aren’t affected at all. But one day it most certainly will.

Yes.

My point still stands what can the the U.K. do about it?

We recycle everything that’s possible to be recycled, we have solar panels, we have a rain water tank sunk under the lawn capable of holding thirty thousand litres, which can be used for flushing toilets and watering garden (with the watering if the garden a fair proportion goes back into the tank)

My car has an eco engine, DH’s is 16 years old, we walk everywhere locally.

I have no idea how as an individual citizen I can do anything more.

PamelaJ1 Sun 30-Jul-23 13:32:42

Can we totally blame China?
Australia exports its coal and makes tons of money.
We all buy ‘stuff’ from China so we don’t add to the uk’s carbon footprint. I really do try not to but sometimes it’s unavoidable.
My friend bought an MG. She was unaware it was made in China, why not a car made here?
I look at every label and immediately lose any desire for the article if it says it’s made there. My DH nearly had a spasm when I paid quite a lot to buy a British made toaster but he has nearly recovered!
I am getting disillusioned though and wonder if I can be bothered to keep on being the rubbish monitor.

Gwenisgreat Sun 30-Jul-23 13:41:32

If the powers that be want us to drive electric cars they will have to make sure we can charge them out of London. We don't all live in the Capital!

maddyone Sun 30-Jul-23 13:41:35

I agree with GrannyGravy and others who have said we’re doing what we can, but our less than 1% of the world’s global emissions are not going to alter outcomes. We all know who the culprits are and we all know that they are not doing much about it. Until they do, nothing we do will make a difference!
