An election looms, so I think it is time to look at all the success over the 13 years that we have witnessed from the government.

Well, coming from me you can’t expect fulsome praise, but honestly? If I could find something I would.

Oh I know! If you are wealthy you have done very well - so that can be marked as a success.

You’d surely all have to agree that a democratic vote (by those who could be bothered) such as the referendum was, needed to be honoured?

The “corrupt and illegal practices” of the Vote Leave campaign in the 2016 referendum undermine the validity of the decision to leave the EU, ruled by high court.

So much for democracy.

Actually an election doesn’t loom.

Actually, it does. If the election is in November 2024 it’s less than 500 days away. When you take out recesses etc. it’s 150 days approximately per year that the Commons sits. So we’re only looking at about 170 days more of parliamentary activity before the election. That cheers me up.

Ahh. But that vote, as has subsequently been proved, contravened part of the definition of a democratic campaign.

The pertinent words are 'free and fair'.

While the campaigns were certainly 'free' the 'fair' element is highly questionable in that £millions were spent on 'dark adverts' shown only to a target audience, who'd been carefully identified as highly likely to be influenced by them, and not available publicly to enable anyone to counter the messages in them. Most undemocratic...

Your OP about wealth told me all I need to know about this thread tho.

Had you not noticed that only the wealthy have increased their wealth over the past 13 years while the rest of the population has steadily fallen behind in real terms and many have fallen into poverty?

I'm sure that the wealthy must count 13 years of tory government as 'successful' It's just stating the obvious, isn't it?

* Umstrongran* Brexit has broken this country (and many hearts ) add to that the many far right politicians and we have a country that I now despise instead of love There is NOTHING democratic about this place
13 years of hell getting more so year on year

TerriBull Thu 10-Aug-23 14:14:04

Well apparently we've moved up to 4th place in the international rankings for reading.

However if a couple of incidents, one experienced, one related, are anything to go by I can't imagine we lead the world in maths, or even basic arithmetic as was applicable in the following. In a pub a few weeks ago, we ordered a couple of drinks, can't remember what the actual amounts were, but really easy almost round figures. that could be done in the head without difficulty. The girl behind the bar, aged late teens asked us to hang on while she got her phone to add these two amounts together and then the other day, whilst buying some hooks in a picture framing shop, the proprietor told us that an 18 year old she had working on Saturdays couldn't work out the change taking £4.90 from a £10 note shock

Getting Brexit Done.
Sorry, but yes it was important to me that the result of the referendum were respected, despite many in the HoC trying to thwart it with their myriad ‘indicative votes’. We were stymied until Boris got elected. Mind you he squandered that stinking 80 seat majority - in part due to Covid. Then the war in the Ukraine. But hey - we ARE out. Massive plus for me.

The 'stinking 80 seat majority'? Well said, Urmstongran!

varian Thu 10-Aug-23 14:40:25

It certainly stinks that an 80 seat majority was gained by only 43% of the votes

AGAA4 Thu 10-Aug-23 14:40:59

"Massive plus for me"

Brexit has been a massive minus for me and many others.

And the politician who gained that majority is now a proven liar!

They stopped everything, Ilovecheese! State spending cut to the bone, with the results we're now living with..

Was that a good thing?

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 10-Aug-23 16:13:53

That’s wriggling if ever I saw it Maizie. You talk about ‘the wealthy’ so must be able to define who you consider them to be - otherwise how can you say they have become wealthier?

Why? Since it has been proven beyond doubt, that it was NOT democratic and based on so many lies, with outside interference- that, had it been binding, would have been cancelled by the Electoral Commission?!?

Galaxy Thu 10-Aug-23 21:39:37

Why. Because you havent the slightest clue what reversing the decision would do.
I voted remain. But I am not so entrenched that I dont understand that that would be a risk.

That is a totally separate issue. Several of us are strongly disagreeing, as is the Electoral Commission- that the Referendum was 'democratic'.

Casdon Thu 10-Aug-23 21:46:19

We can’t reverse the decision, it’s too late. What will happen will be a rebuilding of the lost links and increasing compliance with EU standards so trade is smoother. I predict we will ultimately rejoin, probably in about 20 years time.

Unfortunately Brexit is a massive minus for something like 70% of the population.

In your world maybe.😉

It really is about time you got over this or it will be a permanent thorn in your side.

We all actually live in the same world. And some of us actually care about how Brexit has adversely affected so many people. You only have to read the Lee Anderson thread to see what it has done to this country. Opened up a Pandora’s box of hatred.

If the Labour Party win the next general election I feel sorry for them as they will have an impossible task to undo the errors of the Tories. Of course, the Tories will then be rubbing their hands with glee when Labour struggle.

Glorianny Thu 10-Aug-23 22:24:12

What about more PMs in 13 years than ever before
And of course The shortest ever term as PM.

If the current polls are correct 17 cabinet members including the PM won’t win their seats at the next election, and there will be less than 100 Tory MPs left to rub their hands. Things may change of course, but at the moment the gap is widening.
The details are here.
