The latest “horror” from Braverman

A scheme to waive visas in order that the HO could employ “foreign workers” on the notorious barge if in the event of an outbreak of an infectious disease, has been considered.

It is expected that because of the overcrowded conditions there is almost certainly to be an infectious outbreak such as scabies, diphtheria, covid and other horrors.

It is understood that the local authority would be totally unable to handle the inevitable outbreak.

However, the HO has decided to at present not go ahead with the scheme.

In my view it is our mess and we should deal with it, not drag in immigrant workers, to be infected and no doubt then sent home.

Zoe65 Fri 25-Aug-23 11:49:40

And me too .She’s doing her best to stop these boats as most people want .

25Avalon Fri 25-Aug-23 11:53:53

But they are not going ahead with the scheme.

narrowboatnan Fri 25-Aug-23 11:54:47

Were there outbreaks of such diseases when the barge was used for its original purpose? If so, who dealt with that? If not, the risk is no higher than shoving them all in crowded hotel rooms, surely?

Zoe65 Fri 25-Aug-23 11:55:37

Whitewavemark2 Labour woukd not do anything to cope with the assylum seekers. They would just let them all in regardless if they are criminals or the fact that we have no room for them won’t matter .most of them will vote Labour of course and this country will face more house building on green belt, more long waiting lists,on the nhs, more schools overfilled and so on to achieve this agenda .vote for Labour at your peril but think of your grandchildren’s future too !

Grantonow
If that’s what Braverman thinks, she’s sorely deluded.
People I talk to will not be voting tory for the reason that they are not fixing the problem

Casdon Fri 25-Aug-23 12:07:00

She patently hasn’t done her best to stop asylum seekers Zoe65. There is now the highest backlog ever awaiting processing, and she failed to pump prime the Home Office to deal with that backlog. She hasn’t allowed a British presence in France to inform those who are ineligible that they will not be granted asylum if they cross, or to work with French forces. She hasn’t pursued rejoining the ERAC system. She hasn’t controlled the legal migration numbers, which are also higher than ever. She hasn’t set up a legal route for asylum seekers.
In fact, she has been worse than useless.
There’s far more likelihood that these thing could, should and will happen with a Labour Government. Nobody wants uncontrolled immigration, but it’s the only tool the Tories have in their armoury at the moment to convince the gullible that they can do better than Labour. Just look at all the evidence.

Oh dear - here we go again! Is there anything else to cringe over, about this ghastly government - they don't give a fig for humanity and integrity and it seems evident to me that most of them are thoroughly and unashamedly self-serving. The latest bit of news (on the Today programme at 6.00 am this morning) is that ousted MP's are going to continue to be paid for longer, to get their affairs in order. The period is increasing from 2 months to - I believe - 4, paid for by the tax-payer (you know, the person the Tories profess to support). I guess they are expecting lots of their friends to be given their marching orders and are awarding money where they can. Lovely!

undines Fri 25-Aug-23 12:55:11

Correct me if I'm wrong - I did not know asylum seekers had a vote??
The 'boats' problem is huge, and has its roots in global issues. It will, in my view, never be curtailed unilaterally, by any UK legislation. We need to get together with the rest of Europe - you know, that group of countries we have just spurned - and work something out that is humanitarian and practical. In the end, I'm afraid, it may just be something that happens in the world - we colonised southwards, refugees drift northwards. I am not saying we should feel guilty, for all countries have done reprehensible things. Nor am I saying we should accept all those who want to come here for we are only a small and overcrowded island. There's lots more room, land-wise, in France, for example. Maybe the European nations could 'club together' to build housing for the refugees, where there is space - but I'm just dreaming.....

4allweknow Fri 25-Aug-23 12:58:24

How do all those massive cruise liners control infections unless brought on board as happened at start of Covid.

DiamondLily Fri 25-Aug-23 13:05:39

Legionella is not spread human to human. It's spread by contaminated water supply, and can occur anywhere.

That's why things like hospitals, hotels, swimming pools, commercial jacuzzis/hot tubs are tested daily.

TiggyW Fri 25-Aug-23 13:08:17

Well said, undines. 👍
I still don’t see the attraction of the UK across a treacherous stretch of water, when France is a perfectly safe country. 🤔 Why are refugees so desperate to leave it and pay for a perilous crossing? It’s certainly not for the weather or access to a GP!

MadeInYorkshire Fri 25-Aug-23 13:10:56

Says it all really -

"It is expected that because of the overcrowded conditions there is almost certainly to be an infectious outbreak such as scabies, diphtheria, Covid and other horrors."

What I really find weird is that the Straits of Dover is 18 - 25miles long, 18 miles wide at it's shortest pint, and on a clear day you can see the French coastline - how come it is beyond the wit of the British Navy, the Coastguard and the government to patrol a stretch of water not that long and not that wide when you can actually see across it with the naked eye? Surely with the navy, drones etc it could be patrolled 24/7? This is the C21st after all - we can spot Russian and Chinese planes, why can we not see a dinghy?

Braverman is a disgusting vile creature and needs to go!

It makes me so cross that the likes of her, Patel, Sunak, Yousaf etc would not even be here had their parents not been welcomed in our countries, and they seem to be as racist as the National Front!

This will apply to all MPs who lose their seats, not just Conservative ones.

Cossy Fri 25-Aug-23 13:18:35

She’s just not quite as bad as Patel and better than Nadine Dorries 😂😂😂

Completely agree ! Oh the irony of these people !

Milliedog Fri 25-Aug-23 14:16:54

Mmm. Some points...
1. My children have shared flats with unknown people while at university and as adults. I shared with an unknown person at college.
2. The barge isn't fantastic but it's clean and the migrants can come and go at will. It's hardly prison accommodation.
3. Economic migrants pass through many safe countries before arriving here. They are not persecuted in any of them.
4. We do not have the infrastructure to cope with all people who want to live here. Long nhs waiting lists? Most people coming here illegally are not doctors and nurses. While they are young and fit, they may not need health care, but they will when they are older. Rocketing house prices? We don't have enough housing for people already here. My 37 year old daughter has a well paid job and works long hours but could only afford to buy a very small flat because the bank of mum and dad chipped in. That will impact on what we can afford as we age. Crowded classrooms? In my grandchildren's primary school, many children from other nations join the school without knowing English. That impacts the education of the rest of the class. And the teacher has to cope with all that.
5. I have many friends from other countries who have come to study or work in the UK via legal routes.
6. We have brought in many thousands from Hong Kong, Ukraine (we hosted one lovely Ukrainian for a year), and Afghanistan. And rightly so.
7. Those who come on boats should be sent elsewhere. However, those who disagree with this point of view should step up to the plate and offer to host as we did. We all have good reasons not to host, but those vociferously in favour of boat people being allowed to stay should offer up their homes.
8. Allowing boat people to stay just puts money into the hands of the people smugglers.
Apologies for the long post...

Interesting to see this post. On one post a couple of days ago here, there was a question about which country would be best to retire to. Oh the entitlement in that - as if we have the right to settle wherever we want in the world but completely deny that privilege to those we don't like the look of, whatever privations and problems they have suffered. I find it horribly depressing to think anyone would support Braverman.

Exactly my thoughts too on seeing the post about which country would be best to retire to. I know the people on Gransnet who feel so entitled is a minority, but I do find their posts shocking.

Nicenanny3 Mon 28-Aug-23 07:59:46

You must be easily shocked 😲 If you have money and can support yourself and go through legal channels you probably could settle anywhere in the world if that country allows it.

A bit different from paying people smugglers and arriving on a dinghy or in the back of a lorry with no ID or means to support yourself.

nanna8 Mon 28-Aug-23 08:13:27

There’s some envious people around. That thread was entirely hypothetical but if you want to feed your prejudice, go for it.

DiamondLily Mon 28-Aug-23 10:07:35

Oh well, Braverman has apparently now moved on to her latest/not so bright idea now:

Think you'll find that choosing to live in another country involves getting permission, legal documents, including a passport, money to support yourself, paying health insurance. In other words paying their way.
Ridiculous analogy.
