Should the President of the Spanish FA resign

Or not?

I think he should, then I think he shouldn't.

Should he be forgiven in the light of the excitement prevailing at the time? Or not?

Well. he's stepping down, so it is sorted. Just one comment. The kiss was unacceptable, but I totally disagree that he patted her bottom. It was a congratulatory slap on the back. It landed in the small of her back and nowhere near her bottom,

While women make
excuses for men’s bad behaviour they will never change , why would they?
When I was 19 I was pinned up against a wall in my office by the accountant and kissed hard.
Completely out of the blue, I never reported it there was little point but I didn’t like the feeling it left me with.

For heaven’s sake, she wasn’t sexually assaulted, she was kissed! Of course he shouldn’t resign. If this ethic was applied to the arts, theatre or music, there’d be nobody left. It was just, as others have said, a moment of euphoria.

Generally speaking, those in the Arts and Entertainment world - luvvies - do a lot of hugging and pecking of cheeks but for the most part, I'm not aware that, unless they are familiar with each other, they go around planting full-on mouth kisses or pat bottoms.

How many excuses do we allow for men to cross women's boundaries?

Granmarderby10 Sat 26-Aug-23 09:46:43

Wrong on so many levels.
It will have tainted her big moment.
I have known men who do this kind of thing just to usurp women, then wrap it up as a “moment of euphoria”.

Smileless2012 Sat 26-Aug-23 09:36:11

Perhaps this ethic should be applied to the arts, theatre or music Grandma. Hold someone's head and kissing them on the lips is not a spontaneous response.

He’s now claiming he asked for a quick peck and she agreed. I’ve seen a brief video of him repeating he won’t resign. The men in the audience applauding enthusiastically. The few women not.

A handshake and a quick 'hug' of the shoulders - which is usually acceptable to both men and women - is all that's 'necessary' if someone feels compelled to show emotion at a victory.

A 'quick peck' is not a full-on kiss on the mouth.

Would a woman grab a male footballer's head, kiss him full on the mouth and pat his bottom as he walked away? I doubt it.

As long as people are prepared to make excuses for this kind of male entitlement, the more it will continue. And to those that are excusing his behaviour - are you OK with someone like him doing that to your daughter, or granddaughter?

Kissing someone on the mouth is an intimate gesture, it is not something you publicly force on another person.

The sheer arrogance of him saying he will never resign is all part of that typical male entitlement. The men in the audience clapped because they want to be able to keep hold of that entitlement. Shame on them. If my OH had clapped, I'd have had serious doubts about his integrity. He thinks it's appalling. He's Swedish - Swedes are, supposedly, in popular culture, thought to be very laid back about 'sex' in general (which is something of a myth anyway)... he thinks the man crossed the "boundary line".

He did.

Now the Spanish FA (how many women on that, I wonder) are taking legal action.
In a he lied, she lied situation, what are the odds?

I've watched this a couple of times. Horrible. However... one thought occurred to me was that the young lady's arms were free and she seemed to offer no resistance. I guess many were caught up in the euphoria of the moment/occasion. Not an excuse. Just a thought.

I’m gobsmacked by this comment. Haven’t you heard that it is no longer to be assumed that if someone is sexually assaulted and doesn’t fight back, she must have consented? It is now allowed that you can be taken by surprise and not have time to fight back!

Claiming it was consensual, implies that he managed to fit in a quick. Are you all right if I kiss you passionately?
Or did he just firmly grasp her head so she couldn’t move hers out of the way-which would have left him puckering up to thin air and looking very silly.

Allsorts Sat 26-Aug-23 07:35:42

I didn't watch the match as not interested, I just heard about the incident and our players response to that kiss, my judgement was made purely on that alone, if she wasn't bothered end of matter. However it's escalated now, he is extremely arrogant and when I saw the clip it sickened me. Am against trial by media but in this instance he comes over as a very unpleasant man and what he did was dreadful.

Ramblingrose22 Fri 25-Aug-23 23:34:42

I'm not sure if it was a spontaneous gesture that wasn't intended to cause offence or whether he took advantage of his position in congratulating the players.

Kissing on the cheek would have been less objectionable.

What I am sure of is that he is/was extremely arrogant to state that he'll never resign. Who does he think he is? The last person I remember saying he wasn't going anywhere when asked if he'd have to resign was Kwasi Kwarteng and we all know what happened to him!

I hope the Spanish footballers, both male and female, keep up their protests and put pressure on him to go.

Wyllow3 Fri 25-Aug-23 22:38:49

Yes, at first I thought a sort of quick peck on the lips was implied,

but the footage shows he held on tight to her head as well as the parting pat on the bum and it was quite gross in front of the whole world and she had no choice. It was from someone who clearly felt it was fine and he was "entitled".

grannyqueenie Fri 25-Aug-23 22:32:37

A kiss on the lips in a moment of celebratory excitement is one thing, holding the back of a someone’s head firmly doesn’t look like spontaneity to me, more of a desire to force the other person to comply. In any other setting it would be called sexual assault so why is it trivialised in this instance?

Wyllow3 Fri 25-Aug-23 22:08:24

On the news right now - every single woman on the team have asked him to go, the woman has made it clear it was absolutely NOT consensual, she felt attacked...

the whole team have said they will not represent the country until the man has been removed - the government has said it has to be the countries "me too" moment".

I wasn't sure before. He should go, with apologies.

lixy Fri 25-Aug-23 21:54:37

Yes, he should resign/be sacked and be investigated for similar occurrences.

I'm really, really teed off for the Spanish team (and for women in general) that their achievement of winning the world cup has been totally overshadowed by one man and his c--k.

*She added that she was put "under continuous pressure" to help with a "statement that could justify" Rubiales' actions - and so were her family, friends and team-mates.
These types of incidents add to a long list of situations that the players have been denouncing. This incident is the final straw and what everyone has been able to witness on live television also comes with attitudes like the one we saw this morning [Friday] and have been part of our team's daily life for years," she added*

It’s not a one off

Louella12 Fri 25-Aug-23 21:40:38

I missed the crotch grab! That is just ghastly.

Gillycats Fri 25-Aug-23 21:39:18

Definitely should be sacked. Vile man. Grabbing his crotch like that at such a major international women’s event was unacceptable.

Living in Spain I've had many a kiss on the lips over the years. Mostly unwanted. I managed to invent a neat manoeuvre by coughing and moving face swiftly to the left to avoid lips.

I think he'll have to resign. Social Media has him by the short and curlies and he'll have to go

She couldn't move her head he was holding it

Soccer player Dani Alves is accused of attemped rape and also playing the "consent" game

She was drunk!

She asked for it by winning!
