Charles & Camilla in Paris
(225 Posts)They arrived in windy conditions in Paris today and Camilla looked great, although she had a "Marilyn Monroe moment" on the steps coming down from the plane. I thought the late Queen always had her hems weighted to prevent that.
But Charles - how baggy and scruffy his suit looked next to Macron. Charles is a slim man, like Macron, yet his suit did him no favours whereas Macron looked very smart.
They have got a full programme while they are in Paris. Sounded exhausting.

I think I was more annoyed because of the extra cost involved ^in the transportation of said Bentley! You get it halfpint. It’s not like a family going on holiday to France and using their car to get there and back. Charles & Camilla flew over and they’d arranged for their car to be available for them. The weight of it - I assume it got put on a plane - increased unnecessarily their carbon footprint. Just like the POTUS taking ‘The Beast’ abroad to all countries. Or F1 racing cars being transported all around the world for entertainment.
Sorry I’m venting. Probably the wrong thread too! I’ll C&P this for another probably more relevant thread that’s topical for tomorrow.
😁
It’s £150 to take a car to France, give or take! Cost of a private flight, goodness knows - but seriously, the cost of the car getting to France isn’t the issue here.
I got your drift Urmstongran, but I've been amusing myself reading French news articles on the subject .......
1. Charles needed that particular car in order for him to move around because it is more comfortable for his bad back
2. Due to the height of the vehicle, Camilla could wear a hat without it getting squashed
3. The tinted windows, it's bullet proof etc etc
Take your pick, but as you say it doesn't answer the question why they needed to fly.

What a laugh isn’t it King and Queen. 😝
Charles the environmentalist decided to fly privately from London to Paris and take his Bentley with him.
And this. 👍
“Do as I say not as I do” comes to mind.
I am pretty sure the French commentators said it came on the Shuttle, so about 300 miles of road. They also seemed to be saying that it was symbolic for their arrival and once welcomed by the President they moved to the French cars.
You got my drift too vegansrock! 😊

How are Charles and Camilla getting to Bordeaux?
The point is we are encouraged to cut our carbon emissions.
The powerful and rich of all walks of life don't set the best
example. If we are to be lectured, they are to be criticized.
The Queen used to take the train to Norfolk.

Has no-one ever taken their car over to the Continent?
Really? Ah well.
Just us, then.
My car with its new UK sticker is currently sitting outside my appartement on full view to passing French people. It is even more conspicuous because it is red and most of the cars here are blues or blacks. 🚗
Plenty of other UK cars parked in French hypermarket car parks over here too.
Despite being owned by VW, Bentley vehicles are still designed, manufactured and marketed in/from Crewe.
I suppose HM wanted to be seen as flying the flag. Perhaps some chic, rich Parisiennes might even be tempted to buy one.
Will that offset my guilt for using fossil fuels, lithium and plastic to post on GN?
Don't use search engines, whatever you do, if you're worried about your carbon footprint!

We didnt have a car ☹
^Little did I realise , as I stood in the rain waiting for buses, catching coaches and trains, that we were saving the planet.
I just was very
of any friends whose Dads had cars!^
I’m having a me too moment and feeling quite pleased that I did my bit for the planet. Will that offset my guilt for using fossil fuels, lithium and plastic to post on GN?
I think people in Spain and Italy are much better dressed
I have always preferred Italian fashion to French. There is that air of the unexpected.
And oh my god the way the Italians dress their shop windows at christmas!!! Even the little mudane ones that sell pans and brushes.
Venice at Christmas is a sight to be seen with the windows.

No one is saying he should have used a bike or metro, I’m sure the French would have supplied an official car which would have been every bit as grand as a Bentley. I’m sure we would extend the same courtesy to the Macrons if they came to London.
It’s not a big deal though, is it. The ferry would have been going anyway, transporting hundreds of cars and lorries belonging to other Brits. - Callistemon21 is right.
I do get the criticism about the private plane, but not about the car.

We used to drive to the French Alps at least once a year, we have driven to the South of France, Paris, Southern Portugal and Southern Spain regularly using the train since it was built and before that the ferry (🤮)
Not just you Callistemon21

Yes I do know they have cars in Paris, if he hadn’t taken his car he would still have travelled around in a car would he not ?
No, he should have used the Metro!

I don’t see what the fuss is about the Bentley, it was also used when he went to Germany this year, and it was the same car used by the Queen for state visits to Europe. It’s 20+ years old. It goes by ferry, not on a flight with him. I don’t agree with private flights, but I really don’t see why the car is an issue.
Lots of people take their cars on ferries or under the Tunnel to Europe, some even further than the short hop across the Channel.
I do like the Royal Family as an institution, however there is
something which makes me think of Colonial style when I look
at them during this visit. Set against the chic French it makes
me wince at the old fashioned image they give off. I like
Camilla in the white outfit. Shame he took the Bentley, doesn't
go with enviromental speeches.
