Hi everyone - this is my first post although I’ve been looking at Gransnet for many years.

I have had to bear two suicides - my 20 year old son in 1989 when I was 38 and my husband of 50+ years died in 2019. I don’t know why my son took his own life. We were very young when we married - 17 and 19 - but we worked really hard and thought we had done ok when ……...For years I thought he died because of our inexperience as parents, but after joining The Compassionate Friends I met older parents whose children had died the same way.

My husband left me a letter and the code for his mobile. He took his own life because he had been coercively controlled by a women he had a child with 20 years ago. I knew about the child but I didn’t know about the cc and that she had extracted some £400K from him over the years (and indirectly from me) and he could take no more. He said he felt under a spell to give money to her, her mother, sister and other 4 children. I even used to buy the child presents at Christmas and birthdays and let him come over for Sunday lunch so he would know his dad - unlike her other children. I reported everything to the police but after about a year they said not enough evidence to bring a case. When questioned under caution with a lawyer she just replied ‘no comment’ to all questions. If only he had told me what was happening I would have gone to the police to get help. I will never understand why Lloyds didn’t pick up on thousands of pounds being sent morning and evening, day after day. In the last 6 months of his life he gave some £65K. I saw this as suspicious activity but Lloyds disagreed. I went to the Financial Ombudsman but they will only investigate if I get probate but I’m just so tired of it all.

You never really get over these events. I have a daughter and two grandchildren, but I live in fear as to what will happen next. We’ve all had counselling - except grandson (29) - but at the end of the day you just have to deal with everything as best you can.

I would take my partner, plus any of his adult sons , to task if they discussed women in this manner in front of me or their partners. Suicide is a huge issue for men to deal with and as mothers, wives, partners, females we need to support them. The media per se is not helping

I have always enjoyed Laurence Fox's acting career and feel he has been unfairly attacked and targeted since he appeared on Question Time some time ago. He was set up then when he was described as a "white, privileged male" by a woke feminist when he stated that the UK was a more lovely and welcoming place than most other countries. I can understand why he reacts as he does in response to people who feel he must be cancelled because they feel it is their role in life to find things which offend them.

I don't agree with you orly. What he said was disgusting and there's never any excuse for it. Maybe he should have a think about why feminists take the stance they do. I guess the privileged never like the prospect of losing their privilege.

Suicide and mental health issues are a huge problem for men and women.

Doodledog Look up how "cucked incel" (a phrase Fox used) is being used by the alt-right. What Fox did was respond to AE's comment, not with a reasoned argument, but be demeaning her sexuality.

I wonder why he doesn't refer to Kate Hoey or Ann Widdecombe in the same way. He also attacked her feminism directly as part of his culture war.

No, it wasn't meant as a criticism of anything you've written. I was about to go out and get Pfizered when I wrote it, so was in a hurry.

I'm just surprised that nobody has mentioned the phrase. Maybe GNers don't know what it means. If there ever needed to be any proof of Fox's misogynist intent, it's there in those two words.

I agree what he said was appalling but whatever happened to free speech in this country. Unless he used a swear word then giving publicity to this is plain silly. By the way no one seems to be reporting what the female in question said about male suicide.

The concept of free speech is not an excuse for abuse of the privilege held by those with a media platform.

I enjoyed his acting career and I can understand why he felt the way he did on Question Time but he hasn't done anything to help himself since. He has revelled in being controversial and unpleasant. Even his cousin doesn't seem inclined to defend him when asked.

Yes he used that phrase. I thought it ws an interesting insight into the material he is obviously listening to.

That's what I thought too.

I became aware of "incels" a couple of years ago, when one went on a killing spree. I also cane across the word "cuckd", so I looked at some social media groups where this kind of language is common.

I'm not easily shocked, but I wish I hadn't . It really is scary to think there are misogynists who think this way. It's worse than stereotypical "laddish" behaviour or working man club jokes. Fox must move in those circles.

Exactly! But being misandrist and misogynist in the same breath doesn't make anything neutral.

No, it smacks of a belief in ubermench who should have access to women on demand.

"Cucked" also became linked to BLM. The idea is that any white man who sleeps with a black woman is being "cucked" ie tricked. It moved on from there to being used for a takeover by black people generally.

Somehow or other "cucked" and "incel" then became linked. It's nonsensical really because incels claim women won't sleep with them because they've been brainwashed to dislike alpha males, as they see themselves, so an incel couldn't be cucked.

In their confused minds, they blame women who have been brain-washed by feminism.
