The Tory conference in progress in Manchester and the police are diverted from work they should be doing to prevent coaches of NHS supporter from entering the city and individuals from exercising their right to protest. Sadly under this government it is not longer possible to express opposition. How much more fascist will this government become before they are kicked out of power??

GrannyGravy13 Mon 02-Oct-23 08:17:28

There were plenty of people expecting opposition the other weekend in U.K.

Rejoin
Pro XL Bullies
Right to Food

The U.K. is not a Fascist country

GrannyGravy13 Mon 02-Oct-23 08:19:59

expecting 😡

Autocorrect should have been expressing

We can no longer trust people to protest peacefully. Others with ulterior motives get involved and violate can erupt so very quickly.

Not sure that the OP has much idea what Fascism actually is. It has become an expression that is carelessly banded about, as is Communism, when describing right/left wing governments by people who actually haven't a clue as what either regimes really are. They are not this government or a future Labour one. History lesson perhaps needed?

Doodledog Mon 02-Oct-23 08:50:41

I don’t think this government is fascist, but I think the lessons from history are clear. Fascism usually creeps in, rather than being imposed all at once, and we are living through what feels frighteningly like the start of that creep.

Oreo Mon 02-Oct-23 09:08:09

Not fascist at all.
Have heard this sort of thing before, the far right call the Labour Party communists and the far left call the Conservatives fascists.Yawn.
GE next year.

Quokka Mon 02-Oct-23 09:15:58

Certainly leaning further and further to the right.

Then we may see a thread called how communist is this government, when the LP get into power.
I lot of people wrongly called Corbyn a communist remember? In fact he was a Marxist.😁

Whitewavemark2 Mon 02-Oct-23 10:03:59

No one can argue that this is not the most authoritarian government we’ve had in our lifetime though.

maddyone Mon 02-Oct-23 10:15:29

This is not a fascist government, but it is a high taxation government, a net zero supporting government (with a small rowing back to bring us into line with the EU re timings) and a pro immigration government. These policies are more in line with a more left wing government and this has led to accusations from some quarters that you can’t see much difference between left and right at the moment.

As Marx and Engels wrote the Communist Manifesto I'm not sure where the distinction lies between Marxism and Communism.

TerriBull Mon 02-Oct-23 10:20:27

We do have the right to come together for peaceful protest. It's not only this government that could be deemed illiberal in that respect. Look how women are abused nowadays when they want to hold a "women only meeting" for whatever reason. We are living through extraordinary intolerant times and those who seek to close down rational debate are not necessarily associated with the government.

I like the chant - Say Hey! Ho! Rishi Sunak's got to go!

Marx never described what a communist state would look like.

He talked about socialism though, but that’s not to be confused with the way socialism is understood today.

Despite people protesting that the UK is a democracy our current government is not a democratic government. Democratically elected. yes (though it may be that last of our governments to be democratically elected unless the Voter ID law is scrapped) but that is as far as it goes.

Democracy doesn't end with everyone having a vote. The essence and bedrock of our democracy is Parliament. The UK is a Parliamentary Democracy. And it is in Parliament that our democracy is being gradually destroyed.

I have explained how our constitution works several times over the years. I have pointed out undemocratic moves from the government. I'm not sure if it's worth doing it again... 🤔

I will say that Parliament has lost most of its control of our legislation and that is not at all a good place to be.

Well, a communist state looked like an attempt to put his and Engel's theories into action.

Marx was a good sociologist in some ways, but he failed to understand just how difficult it is to achieve consensus and how to keep an organisation in a state of equilibrium. He recognised that repression was a means of achieving control but not how to harness the ultimate threat of force (which all governments are based on) in such a way that it would be only minimally used. And he was no psychologist.

Well that will depend on who wins.

The human rights lawyer against the law.

There is no more authoritarian leader than Starmer, throwing Jews out of the party, conflating support for Palestine with anti semitism. Not a word from the media because he is establishment. Goodness knows what his government would be like.
Starmer is a liar
Starmer out
Unseat Starmer.
U turns recent one on social housing Labour are now saying, it is merely a long-term aspiration.

Oh, FGS, Grany.

Can't we just have a discussion about the current government? Or Marxism, or, something interesting?
