Is this ironic or what? Suella's speech

As Suella Braverman rants about gender ideology and people being "disciplined for using the wrong words" a quietly spoken man in the audience says "It's trash." He's immediately surrounded and escorted from the conference by security and policemen. He has been a member of the Conservative party for 50 years and is the chair of the London Assembly. Seems you can be disciplined for using any words in the Tory Party.

I was utterly appalled by this action. It felt like the kind of thing we see happening in oppressive regimes where any dissent is forbidden. The man in question wasn’t shouting or causing a disturbance - he was merely voicing an opinion that was different to that of Ms Braverman😱 Clearly not allowed!

See below for what he was protesting about.

He should not havebeen treated in that way.He was a long standing member of the Conservative Party who was just voicing his opinion.

Dinahmo Wed 04-Oct-23 14:52:06

Why were the police involved? Surely they have better tings to do than police the Tory party conference?

That poor man was hustled out by several burly men.

MerylStreep Wed 04-Oct-23 15:06:14

He often speaks out against the government when on GBNews, as do a lot of Tory voting commentators.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 04-Oct-23 15:25:16

Braverman believes in the freedom of speech, but would dearly like to get rid of the law that protects that freedom.

I think her name ought to be Janus.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 04-Oct-23 15:37:12

Time and place.

Oreo Wed 04-Oct-23 15:47:34

He was heckling but the response seemed heavy handed. There was a man heckling a few years ago at the LP conference, I think he was disabled too, and he was dragged out by security.
It happens at these events.

Grantanow Wed 04-Oct-23 15:53:14

It was a very mild form of heckling which any platform speaker ought to be able to respond to without resorting to the heavies. I recall the late Roy Jenkins was well able to push back in far more raucous meetings than the Tory conference.

Oreo Wed 04-Oct-23 15:55:30

Security has been stepped up as time has gone on, not always for the better but that’s modern life.

Iam64 Wed 04-Oct-23 15:58:23

Minor miracle - I agree with Oreo. We live in different times. JFK, Bobby K, Jo Cox and forgive me for not recalling the name of the conservative mp murdered.

Iam64 if you came to my place for a cuppa and biscuit you may be surprised at how much we would have in common.😃

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 04-Oct-23 17:10:35

Yes, David Amess. Yesterday’s mild heckler can be today’s murderer. Remember also the Brighton bombing - these events provide an opportunity for those who would do harm and risks can’t be taken.

Callistemon21 Wed 04-Oct-23 17:19:17

Suella Braverman thinks Andrew Boff should be allowed back into the conference, as do other prominent Tories.

Sounds like heavy handed security people making it into a storm in a teacup.

Glorianny Wed 04-Oct-23 17:24:49

The heckler isn't just anyone, he is a well known member of the party the chair of the London Assembly- A possible bomber!!! Oh come on!

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 04-Oct-23 17:32:15

There’s no time in these situations for security people, who are responsible for everyone’s safety, to check who someone is and whether they have ill intent. And the mildest of people has been known to turn. It’s easy for us sitting in our armchairs - security people are paid to act quickly and effectively.

They probably did the right thing, although I haven't seen it so can't say for certain.
Was he quietly muttering or shouting?
Could he not listen first, ask questions later?

But now they know who he is, he should have his pass returned.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 04-Oct-23 17:46:13

Apparently he was speaking quietly but obviously he came to the attention of the security people. He is able to return.

Dinahmo Wed 04-Oct-23 17:57:50

Surely everyone going into the conference is checked by security before being allowed in?

We went to a meeting held in Brixton by the SDP. Shirley Williams was heckled and she dealt with it simply by allowing the person to shout and not responding. He soon gave up.

Glorianny Wed 04-Oct-23 18:52:06

You can see his very quiet comments here. www.independent.co.uk/tv/news/florida-black-history-art-vandalism-b2424028.html?ap=1
And the crowd of people it attracted, including a policeman. What was a policeman doing policing the inside of a private conference?

Iam64 Wed 04-Oct-23 18:54:32

Heckling used to be accepted as part of delivering political speeches. It can add to the debate.
We live in a more reactive society and there seems to be increasingly high levels of anger and polarised view points.
I’m sorry this man was evicted but the security staff can’t know who, poses a threat and who is just going to have a shout,

Oreo, you’re on for a cuppa and a biscuit

Glorianny Wed 04-Oct-23 18:58:19

If you watch the video there are a number of people talking to him before they decide to get security to escort him out. He's wearing his ID badge so wouldn't be difficult to check him out.

Iam64 Wed 04-Oct-23 19:01:17

Glorianny, I understand the point you make. However I’d rather have one genuine man escorted out than anyone hurt. Terrible state of affairs
