Another story MP arrested for alleged rape.

Galaxy Thu 26-Oct-23 19:33:02

I fear the enforcers of the law quite a bit to be fair. The Met for example have been behaving in an appalling way for a considerable length of time.
If you think I have broken any law in my post please report me.

Casdon Thu 26-Oct-23 19:47:47

I wouldn’t worry Galaxy. I’m not sure what welbeck meant by her comment exactly, but as Crispin Blunt himself outlined the charges not the police, and as the incident regarding his defence of the other MP is already in the public domain, you’re in the clear I’m sure.

MerylStreep Thu 26-Oct-23 19:56:19

welbeck

you do not fear the law ?

I fear the law but not in the way you infer.
It’s very scary when you’re arrested for something you know damn well you haven’t done.

Galaxy Thu 26-Oct-23 20:42:03

Oh I am not worried. smile

That was shocking, I kept thinking about the poor baby crying in the car, too!

Fear the law?

I'm not sure what that means.
Fear the laws of the land?
Fear law enforcers?

The law should apply equally to everyone and a person has the right to be presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

A member of my extended family was charged with rape. The accusation came from his very vindictive ex wife. He was suspended from his job as a result (police). We all believed him to be innocent as he claimed because we were well aware of his ex wife’s behaviour. It took over a year for it to come to trial. A year of hell for him. He was found to be innocent.

Do not be so quick to judge until you know the facts.

Galaxy Fri 27-Oct-23 09:32:18

I am not judging him on this case in the slightest. I judge him on his previous unpleasant behaviour.

Anniebach Fri 27-Oct-23 09:33:49

Has he been accused of rape before this ?

Katie59 Fri 27-Oct-23 09:38:26

These historic claims are very difficult to prove, unless there are multiple claims they are unlikely to result in a criminal conviction. A civil claim involving compensation is much easier to determine but then it’s the incentive of a wealthy man who can pay. There will be more cases because any wealthy public figure that had a relationship with a young junior makes himself vulnerable to a claim years later.

Working as a young nurse I was groped by patients many times, a couple of times by other staff, it was a hazard of the job, you brush it off, I’m sure it’s not as bad these days, 40 yrs ago it was bad!.

Rape is not easily "brushed off" Katie59

Galaxy Fri 27-Oct-23 10:06:27

Actually if you look at some of the most serious offenders they often have a history of flashing, and other offences, so it's not ideal for society to brush it off.
No annie his behaviour was around defending an mp found guilty of assaulting a 15 year old, hounding of women who disagree with, failure to declare interests etc.

Of course not but 10 yrs later you are not going to prove it in a criminal court. For Blunt its the reputational damage that will cost him unless there are a string of other incidents.

NotSpaghetti Fri 27-Oct-23 12:47:46

I thought this was only last September.
Perhaps I'm wrong.

Anniebach Fri 27-Oct-23 13:08:40

He said he was homosexual over 10 years ago

NotSpaghetti Fri 27-Oct-23 14:10:04

Sorry Annie I think we may be talking about different things...
I'm not sure about the relevance?

I was saying the "offence" was apparently last September (I assume not the one just gone).
I have read little about it so may be wrong of course.

MaizieD Fri 27-Oct-23 14:15:06

According to the Guardian this morning Blunt says that he had earlier made a complaint to the police about his current accuser attempting extortion.

Which muddies the water somewhat.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 27-Oct-23 14:19:35

Whatever the outcome of this accusation, it seems to me that a lot of MPs live very seedy lives and seem to be permanently in the gutter.

Certainly not people most would want to mix with socially.

A quick Google search shows that out of 650 MP’s 23 have been suspended so approximately 5%.

This is over all parties sitting in the commons.

Galaxy Fri 27-Oct-23 15:31:43

And in terms of sexual misbehaviour my guess is amongst female Mps it will be close to 0.

That’s the ones that have committed an offence. I’m talking about lifestyle choices that I think many would find a tad yucky

AGAA4 Fri 27-Oct-23 15:38:33

There are probably a lot more than 5% who have stayed under the radar.

I doubt if MP’s in general are more tacky than any other human.

Look at all the so called celebrities who have hit the headlines this year for alleged unsavoury deeds.

We have a MP in our extended family and know several others, they are not tacky in any way, shape or form.

Cabowich Fri 27-Oct-23 16:53:24

Guilty or not, I'm pleased to see he has "outed" himself. Pretty sensible considering the two-week circus that ensued when everyone was trying to find out who the presenter was in the Huw Edwards case.

We've barely blinked an eye at Crispin Blunt in comparison.

Iam64 Fri 27-Oct-23 17:18:24

In the year to December 2021, there were 67,125 rape offences recorded. The number of completed rape prosecutions plummeted from 5,190 in 2016-17 to 2,409 in 2021. The number of convictions almost halved.

Dame Vera Baird - ‘in my first annual report in 2020, I made headlines by saying we were witnessing the effective decriminalisation of rape”

No wonder few victims report rape.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 27-Oct-23 17:21:30

Was that rape offences or accusations of rape Iam?
