There is something inherently wrong with Iran chairing the UN Human Rights Committee as from 2nd November 2023

It’s frightening how easily we’re giving in to these people. To have Iran chair the UNHR committee is essentially validating the way they treat their citizens. God help those who disagree with them.

Like others here, we also have friends who lived a wonderful life in Iran in the 70’s. One of their children was born there and has a Persian name. Iran sounds like a different planet now. sad

Says it all about the UN really.

TerriBull

The Iran that has Morality Police who dragged some poor 16 year old off a train for not wearing a headscarf, beat her around the head which left her in a coma before she subsequently died. WTF do they know about human rights shock

The UN was set up in different days, maybe it served some sort of purpose then. For ages it has been a useless talking shop, it has had trillions of pounds thrown at it and achieves what exactly?

I agree totally.

I've thought for a long time that it is just a useless waste of money because it achieves none of its original aims.

Iran chairing the UN Human Rights Committee as from tomorrow is an affront to women everywhere.

The United Nutjobs are really irrelevant these days. I really wonder where the ‘united’ comes in - maybe ‘unco-ordinated’ would be a better moniker.

Agree.. Total waste of time and money.
Useless to the extreme.

maddyone Thu 02-Nov-23 11:37:29

To be honest, I’ve been thinking that for some time. The money could be more usefully employed elsewhere.

About as useful as the former League of Nations in the 1930s.

What can be done? It’s awful I agree, can we campaign, will anyone listen? Will we be dismissed as the equivalent of terfs or Islamophobic because we object

No words, especially with the sad events in the area surrounding them at this point in time, and their involvement.

UN has been useless for years.Putting foxes in charge of henhouse so to speak.
Absolutely nothing to help West Papua, Tibet, Ukraine, Israel, nothing to save North Koreans and cruel dictatorships put in charge of human rights..Islamic fundamentalists that oppress women in charge.

Iran? I've been rendered speechless!! Who organises this circus? Only advice to Israel is to ignore both the futile/stupid, and the wicked members of this rabble.

My brother lived and worked in Iran 1977-79 we visited in 78. It was fine then although some men gave us a hard time. I never felt really at ease though. My then husband and I were sunbathing on the balcony one day and had stones thrown at us! My brother escaped in 79 to Jordan when the Shah was overthrown.
It is a very volatile, unsafe country which rarely, if ever, listens or tells the truth. The UN, in my opinion, is a spent force which rarely, if ever, makes any difference to the situations it faces. Look at Bosnia!!!!

Iran joined the United Nations in 1945 and their representative is one of 5 vice presidents elected from September this year.
Will widen my research so not chairing but sharing.

Katie59 Sat 04-Nov-23 16:48:01

It has become an irrelevant talking shop with very few powers it might just as well become come another aid organization. Human rights mean nothing in Iran, China, Russia or a great many other nations who pay lip service to it.

grandtanteJE65 Sat 04-Nov-23 17:15:50

No, the UN has not lost the plot: they never found it!

silverlining48 Sat 04-Nov-23 17:28:52

I think quite a number of U.N. personnel have already died in Gaza. More grieving families.

The UN is also saturated with transactivists. This is what they posted on International Lesbian Day (October 8th):
"Remember, trans lesbians are lesbians too.
Let's uplift and honour EVERY expression of love and identity! Happy International #LesbianDay! "

with this image:

(They did get 100% angry responses. Like last year. They do it on purpose.)

I have zero faith in the UN. As for hosting it in Iran, words fail me
