“We are killing like we haven’t killed since 1967”
"Britons despair of violence instead of taking sides"
A head line from yesterday's Sunday Times who printed the results of of a YouGov Poll with possibly an interesting statistic of the different age demographics and how they are lined up in their support of the opposing sides in this terrible conflict. I'm focusing here on the middle ground headed up where sympathies lie,
"Both sides equally" as follows: 18-24 17%, 25-49 28%, 50-64 39%, 65 plus 37% Possibly that response of the older generation, could be argued reflects the more measured attitude of knowing that, as with most conflicts, there are two sides and situations are generally more nuanced than the superficial black and white.
Hamas attack on the defenceless citizens of Israel was the stuff of nightmares, there was a headline, a few days ago in particular, as to what was inflicted on babies which I wish I'd never seen, but once read cannot be unread. This was premeditated, barbaric in the worst possible sense, enough to think "we've come so far in how mankind has developed, but something like this happens and we might just as well be back in ancient times" We know there is another side, The Palestinians have undoubtedly been treated most unfairly, but nothing justifies the brutality that was meted out that day.
Now the Jewish communities of the western world are having the full force of the hatred of the Israeli government well and truly dumped on them. Why? THEY HAVEN'T DONE ANYTHING WRONG! they are communities like the rest of us just peacefully trying to go about their daily lives. Stars of David have been daubed on Jewish houses, businesses, within their communities in Germany and France and to a lesser extent here, all resonant of previous nightmare times Jewish people lived through. The other day a Jewish woman in Lyon was stabbed, how much worse is this all going to get, it's unbelievably depressing that one community can be so unfairly reviled in this way. What of the pro Palestinian marches, whilst I accept many marching are doing just that supporting Palestine, there are equally plenty of agitators and Hamas supporters. Posters pin pointed have shown comments such as these "make this a Jew free world" "Rid the world of the Jews" the hate is there in full force, once again for the umpteenth time they are being "othered" singled out, attacked, blamed, just to be Jewish is to be conflated with whatever the government of Israel is doing. The demonstrations are becoming more and more aggressive in their stance, should they for example be allowed to occupy the concourses of London train terminals, where commuters have to pass through that throng, and if Jewish, I imagine that could be alarming as it was on the tube train recently, when the train driver, who I hope was sacked, decided to initiate a completely inappropriate support Palestine chant amongst commuters on his train. Some of those demonstrating aren't doing it in that passive, dopey way of say Just Stop Oil, it's full on vitriol on the part of some militants, less about support of one faction and more about haranguing our Jewish community. IMO they should not be allowed to occupy areas where the general public have to pass through and the police should do more to arrest those that are overtly committing hate crimes against Jewish people.
In summary, another heartbreaking headline in yesterday's paper from Palestinian Dr Izzeldin Abuelaish "An Israeli shell killed three of my girls, but hate will only prolong the horror"
No thanks.
Some comments reminded me of my mother's experience. She was studying German in Munich in 1932- when it all started. The first shops smashed, the first insults shouted around, the first beatings in the street. She wrote to her father about it, and he told her to return early, before her year at Uni was over. Some of her Jewish friends asked her to tell everyone back home, because they had no voice,, and no-one would believe them.
She tried- no-one believed her- even her journalist friends.
Very different back then, now we have so much more thrown at us including fake news, deepfake recordings and sophisticated propaganda plus all kinds of stuff on SM. It doesn’t do to blindly swallow all of it.
It is perhaps not available here because it has been checked and found to be false propaganda/conspiracy theory.

It's more likely not available for copyright reasons.
Perhaps try to Google John Oliver?

Were all theses protesters arrested?
Thanks for posting this picture (shown in the video). Indeed.
Huge demonstrations in Israel against Netanyahu, and against his policies and the bombing of civilians, and continued illegal occupation.

I think MerylStreep might have been asking if all these protestors over the years had been beaten black and blue, lost their jobs, been imprisoned etc.
As I posted previously, protesting seems to be be a regular occurrence in most democratic countries.

You said Israelis protesting were being thrown into prison and being attacked!!
I went to the synagogue a few days ago - first time in years - just felt drawn there.
Prayers were said for Israel BUT prayers were also said for the Palestinians and the suffering there at present. I also spoke to a few people and the female Rabbi. All had family and friends in Israel and they were shocked when I said what I’d read on here about people being beaten and jailed for protesting. They weren’t enamoured of BN either and said they know many in Israel feel the same but had heard nothing of that behaviour. If anything, regardless of feelings about BN and his government, Israelis were coming together at this terrible time. They all wanted it to end but turning on each other? I find that hard to believe and prefer to use my own sources.
I don’t know if this has already been mentioned on one of the Israel /Palestine threads but I watched Michal Weitz’s account of reading her great grandfather Joseph’s diaries and I think the best example of how young Israelis are questioning the rights of settlement and expulsion of Palestinians that their parents and grandparents have accepted without question.
It’s very enlightening.

About the huge marches in Israel- since then Netanyahu has passed a new Law to forbid more and to give police and army for powers to arrest any who criticise his regime and bombing- and even show photos and the names of victims.
Israel is hugely divided- it has been for many years due to Netanyahu. Part of the anger is because he allowed the attacks and just seems to have given up on the hostages- who have become part of the collateral damage.
But being Jewish is not the same as being Israeli.
Enough Israeli's voted very recently for Netanyahu and those other groups in his coalition for him to be representative of the citizens of Israel. However, this has got nothing to do with most Jewish people because they are citizens of other countries.
I have seen nothing to indicate that Mr Netanyahu has given up on the hostages
There are obviously ongoing negotiations behind the scenes.
No doubt we will have ISIS, Hezbollah and The Taliban are just misunderstood…

Oops sorry posted on the wrong thread 😼
MOnica many Israelis living in Israel oppose Netanyahu. Not unlike Britain, where polls increasingly show people don’t feel our government represents us

Did you quite honestly think they may not have been?
Thanks Callistemon
Our C of E Church prayed for peace, for the people of Palestine and Israel. I heard a local imam and a rabbi interviewed this week, both praying for peace
I can’t imagine anyone with genuine faith doing anything else

I am aghast at this comment, I truly am. My stomach churned as I read it.
It seems to imply that Jewish people are unfeeling and uncaring, when my experience of our Jewish family is that they are very much the opposite.

I attended two Remembrance services last weekend. Prayers for peace for the people of Israel and Palestine were said at both.

Unbelievable, isn't it!
Justin Welby, Sheikh Ibrahim Mogra and Rabbi Jonathan Wittenberg delivered a joint statement of solidarity at Lambeth Palace.
Religious leaders from Bristol came together at Bristol Cathedral on Thursday to call for a “swift and peaceful” end to the Israel-Palestine conflict. Leaders from the Jewish, Muslim and Christian community invited people in Bristol to join them in prayer for those affected by the violence in Israel and Palestine.

I attended two services as well, and think the word peace may have been mentioned 20 times in prayers, supplications and the sermon. Prayers for those people suffering on both sides of this conflict and for those in other conflicts around the world.
It was certainly the word which stood out the most last weekend.
On a slightly different note I have just listened to the BBC apologising for incorrect reporting on the Israeli forces entering the hospital where Hamas have military operations. They reported the IDF were targeting Arabic speakers and medical personnel. They have admitted they should have said the IDF included Arabic speakers and were providing aid to the medical staff.
Makes you wonder what other misinformation is out there but kudos to the beeb for correcting their error.
If only every source corrected its errors!
