Should any marches around or near the Cenotaph this weekend not be allowed?

Following the defacing of a Cenotaph in Rotherham yesterday, would it be advisable for the police to rule that marches in or around the area of the Cenotaph should not be allowed, this weekend only?
A poppy seller was attacked by people in a huge crowd this week, people who have been marching on previous weekends have committed hate crimes by calling for Jews to be eliminated. Should the sanctity of the Cenotaph and the Remembrance Service be at the mercy of the marchers to choose to do the right thing? Why was a Cenotaph thought to be a legitimate target in Rotherham?
Surely those who live in our liberal democracy should understand why this weekend is particularly special to so many people. Those of us who live in this country, a liberal democracy, should understand that compared to so many people in the world, we are very lucky to live in a country that affords us great freedoms, including the right to protest peacefully. Peaceful protest however, does not include the right to call for the deaths of other people, to attack poppy sellers or others, or to deface public buildings.
Why are the London police refusing to use the laws that are already available to ban any marching around this area for for this one weekend?

The march is on Saturday and goes nowhere near the Cenotaph. I feel that Braverman is being deliberately provocative. Most of the marchers are there to promote peace. We live in a free country thanks to the sacrifice of so many.

Since huge numbers of posters are carried which say free Palestine, pictures of Jewish children who are hostages are ripped down, people march with their faces coveted and call from the river to the sea, people are arrested for various crimes including calling for jihadi, poppy sellers are attacked, thumped and kicked, I’m sorry, but I don’t think marchers are marching for peace. They are marching for the overthrow and elimination of the Jewish state, so let’s just be clear about that!

Is Braverman hoping Sunak will sack her? She can then present herself as a strong right wing potential leader?

She’s dangerous isn’t she.

I think so.
Wants to do maximum damage.

Thank you varian

Well, I don't.

So singing of ‘from the river to the sea’ is singing about joining together for a paddle on a sunny day

Well, I don't.

Neither do I. Many on the march will be Jews, with family still in Israel, who are terrified of Netanyahu's war mongering on so so many fronts, including for Jews in Israel and all over the world.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 09-Nov-23 10:45:11

So those so critical of the peace marchers exercising their right of protest peaceably would you ban the March?

The poppy sellers were spoken to by the police - there is no case to answer so that isn’t true and I suspect much of the alarmist posts are not true either. Everyone needs to think very carefully before they post.

People need to calm down and remember that the U.K. is a democratic state with the freedom of speech as one of our freedoms. That is something very precious and idiots like Braverman would get rid of it in the blink of an eye if she could. She is endeavouring to undermine the police at the very time when she should be providing them support as a minister if the U.K. government. Cocking a snook at Sunak is disgraceful. She needs sacking.

What does this mean? They were attacked!

maddyone Thu 09-Nov-23 10:48:37

They are not peace marchers, they are free Palestine marchers. It’s different!

Ilovecheese Thu 09-Nov-23 10:49:19

Quite right Whitewavemark2

Dinahmo Thu 09-Nov-23 10:56:33

I suspect that many of those people on the marches who wear masks and chant anti Jewish slogans are there because they are anti Jewish people and not because they are supporting Palestine and opposed to Israel. There are always people on marches who are disruptive and who aren't supporting whatever the cause is.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 09-Nov-23 10:57:30

👀

Dinahmo Thu 09-Nov-23 10:57:52

I'm glad so many of you are remembering the Muslims too.

Suddenly the Met are so trustworthy

Whitewavemark2 Thu 09-Nov-23 11:07:51

Hope not Hate - the group set up after Joe Cox murder, is monitoring the situation this weekend- in particular the far rights plans for the so called “defence” of the cenotaph.

Galaxy Thu 09-Nov-23 11:11:08

They have as much right to match as the other 'side', that's the thing with freedom if speech and freedom of protest, you dont get to choose the ones you like, it's pretty much all or nothing.

Galaxy Thu 09-Nov-23 11:11:38

Someone should take away my freedom to type poorly.

Ilovecheese Thu 09-Nov-23 11:11:39

The Met may have its faults, but no Government should be able to bend the law to suit itself.
Overrule the police on this and what will she want next.
She is stirring up division and fear for her own ends.

Anniebach Thu 09-Nov-23 11:16:23

The police ‘have no reason to believe’

Whitewavemark2 Thu 09-Nov-23 11:24:04

So Bravermans article was not signed off by number 10 - they had sight of the document, but asked for changes which she never undertook.

She is running amok.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 09-Nov-23 11:27:39

So how weak is Sunak? Let’s wait and see.

SueDoku Thu 09-Nov-23 11:29:25

Ilovecheese

Stella Braverman and the Daily Mail are deliberately inflaming tensions and helping the Tommy Robinson types to find a justification for starting trouble at a march advocating peace.
She will then have an excuse to further remove any right to protest against anything that the Government does.
She is using Armastice day to further her own agenda.

Spot on..! Robinson and his mates will be the ones causing trouble, attacking people etc.

Iam64 Thu 09-Nov-23 11:30:15

Annie lots of posters raised concerns about the Met
I trust the commissioner on this more than Braverman
