A wise move? Or will he come to regret it?

They’re now saying it’s good to have someone with experience in government. They’ve been in power for how many years now 13? Surely they should have a bit of experience by now. Or, at least they would have had Johnson not thrown out as many experienced MP’s as he could. And let’s not forget Braverman rose to power quickly because Johnson needed an Attorney General that was prepared to help him to override the law of the land. I think people forget she was Attorney General: I reckon it still gives Dominic Grieve nightmares. I bet Rory will get some stick from Alastair about not knowing this was going to happen after he let slip that he emailed Sunak regularly! I really need a break from politics but it’s been a case of blink and you’ll miss it for years now! What next? Election? Vote of no confidence in Sunak?

Gernanshepherdsmum I would argue that Cameron’s trashing of the country goes back much further than the Brexit referendum. He introduced austerity which was a way for the government to convince the electorate that public spending should be cut - an unnecessary action that began the decimation of public services. Then he called the Brexit referendum to quiet the Euro sceptics in his own party. The electorate was not calling for an in/out referendum on the EU. Cameron knew the risks for the country if the outcome was to leave - yet he put his own political career ahead of the good of the country. Also, his past record on foreign policy is hardly glowing. I loathe him!

Esther McVey - minister for common sense

Dear oh dear oh dear.

I’ve always found it difficult to dislike Cameron in the way that I couldn’t dislike John Major. But it’s probably because he didn’t seem to be one of the members of the Bullington (sp) Club that would burn twenty pound notes in front of poor people. Which isn’t exactly a good enough reason to actually like him.

But he was a member😮 don’t forget the pig!!

Well if there’s another leadership challenge why not? Sunak’s toast anyway and the dice might as well be rolled again - one last throw before annihilation at the GE?

eazybee Mon 13-Nov-23 18:53:57

Apparently Sunak didn't invite Suella Braverman to Downing Street, nor did he write her a letter to tell her she was sacked; he informed her by telephone.

Manners Makyth Man.
Clearly not in his case.

Letters beginning arrive into the 1922.
Be an interesting few weeks!

So that was Suella's game, she wanted to get sacked to unite the right wing of the party and force another leadership contest. This is just so depressing.

Urmstongran Mon 13-Nov-23 18:24:17

Uniting the party isn’t going to be easy. And how can you bring the electorate along without it?

Actually Sunak offering the job to Cameron sends out a ‘vote of no confidence’ surely to all his MPs. Not ONE of them good enough to be Foreign Secretary? He’s had to elevate Cameron to the Lords first to finagle this. No wonder Speaker Hoyle isn’t impressed.

Yes but sewerage is a real issue and Coffey did zero about that.

I suppose that I am thinking that she did as little as her boss - the PM - wanted her to do. That is who she was answerable to. I've nothing to back it up, but it kind of fits with the lack of interest that the Tories have shown in environmental issues since 2010. If they actually gave a damn, would they have more than halved the EA's budgets in that time?

foxie48 Mon 13-Nov-23 18:12:46

I think Sunak has brought Cameron back to signal that the party is moving away from the far right. I loathe Cameron but he is not a Thatcherite conservative nor is he on the far right. Sunak is preparing for the next election and realises that the move to the right is damaging the party. Love it or hate it but the centre ground is the winning place to be.

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 13-Nov-23 18:07:13

Lizziedrip, those who voted to leave the EU trashed the UK. Cameron had promised a referendum and a referendum was held. Those who voted to leave are responsible for what happened after that. I was not one of them. He is, imho, a good man for the job in the face of the difficulties we currently face.

growstuff Mon 13-Nov-23 18:06:30

I'm pretty sure that Sunak gave up his green card.

When Coffey was Health Minister I thought she was a perfect example of what not to do to look after your health.

That dreadful photo of her with stained clothes and a cigar😮

vegansrock Mon 13-Nov-23 18:04:37

On her watch our waterways have been polluted with sewage and our natural environment has become depleted . Worse thing is - she didn’t care.

Siope

Would love to have been a fly on the wall at the over a hour long meeting that led to Coffey’a resignation.

Coffey was one of the least effective Environment ministers ever, and they have had some dreadful ones.

In a perverse sort of way, she is almost irrelevant, as the environment is probably at the bottom of the government's list of priorities. Just look at how funding for the environment agency has been slashed for proof of this.

I am absolutely enraged that Cameron is back in a top job. This man trashed the UK and walked away - he should not now have a position of power handed to him on a plate. Even more infuriating is the way this deal has been done. Totally undemocratic! The man is not an elected representative of the people; he’s accountable to no constituents; he’s been made a lifetime peer TODAY just so that he can become foreign secretary; all done in secret, behind closed doors. Shame on the king for agreeing to award him a peerage. Shame on Sunak for such egregious manipulation. Apparently the speaker of the HoC is very unhappy about the situation - do you know what Lyndsey, you’re not the only one! What a shining beacon of democracy the UK is … NOT!

Spot on but no surprise? This government has .no scruples.

maddyone Mon 13-Nov-23 17:59:02

LizzirDrip I agree with you.

I wouldn’t mind betting George Osborne will be back soon. A safe seat somewhere for him.

And I think all Sunak is interested in is making his name on the World stage and get a nice new role - probably going to resign before or just after Christmas so he doesnt get the blame for losing the election! He has his Green Card....

I hadn’t thought of that. Maybe you’re right Urmstongran.

What about Cameron’s Greenshill connection? And his family investments overseas to avoid taxes. I don’t trust him.
