Transgender footballer Francesca Needham says she’s being discriminated aga

Francesca was born male, went through puberty as a male. She is 30 years old and plays for Rossington Main Ladies. On 29 October, she caused an injury to an opponent that resulted in a broken knee. Since then, two teams in the Sheffield and Hallanshute Women and Girls League have postponed matches. Francesca is said to be considering legal action for discrimination after opposing teams refused to play against her.
It seems the women in opposing teams say they feared playing against her after the injury caused by her blocking a shot.

It seems football is behind other sports in allowing trans women who went through puberty to compete against adult females.

My daughters played football in girls teams. I really wouldn’t have wanted them playing against boys

Rosie51, I confess to having similar less than friendly thoughts about Mr Daley.

Rosie51 Fri 24-Nov-23 17:30:07

Of course Tom Daley and his husband knew exactly the differences between a transwoman and a woman when they wanted a surrogate to enable them to have children. No confusion then, he was happy to discriminate.

Precisely Mollygo and I wonder how fair Tom would have found it if he were a woman and found himself competing against a manhmm.

Tom Daley - he should stick to swimming

Mollygo Fri 24-Nov-23 16:56:46

Tom Daley thinks it is unfair that Fina has banned transgender athletes from competing in female sports.
”I was furious," he told iNews. "Anyone that's told that they can't compete or can't do something they love just because of who they are, it's not on.

No one has told them they can’t compete, only that they can’t cheat by competing in female sports which, since they aren’t female, seems fair.
Fina are going to introduce an open category that anyone can compete in.
I predict that TW will fight against that.
I further predict that if the open category ever takes off, it could well be filled with very good male swimmers, who think they have an extra chance to win as well as the TW. I don’t doubt there will be protests about that too.

Common sense dictates that this is a ludicrous situation. Unfortunately, common sense seems to have got up and gorn.

Men and transgender women (i.e. men) tend to have longer and stronger arms than women. Longer reach will count in pool, will it not? And in any sport involving throwing anything or pulling anything (like darts or archery) men and men who claim to be women will have an advantage.

Women’s sports for women, no ifs or buts.

I’m very much in favour of women’s sport being for women, whenever men or trans women have a physical advantage, and that includes nearly all of them. Of course people who’ve gone through puberty as boys should never be playing against women in football, rugby, etc - it’s dangerous as well as being unfair.

But I’m surprised that the female pool player in your linked article refused to play against a transgender player. I’m now wondering why precision sports such as pool and darts need to be split along gender lines at all. Is there a reason for it?

Good points, Baggs.

Baggs Fri 24-Nov-23 10:30:47

Sometimes it's necessary to make discriminatory judgments/rules for the sake of fairness.

Essentially, it's no different from discriminating against people who cheat by taking performance-enhancing drugs.

Baggs Fri 24-Nov-23 10:20:09

Not all discrimination is bad. People who cheat should be discriminated against when a fair playing field is wanted. Women's sports grew to allow natal women to play against their near equals.

Oreo Fri 24-Nov-23 09:12:38

Transwomen just can’t be allowed to compete with women in sports it’s unfair and dangerous.
If they love the sport so much let them play in a mens team.
Do transmen queue up to play in mens sports? I don’t think so.

Crazy world.

Unimaginable joannapianno

Moonwatcher1904 Thu 23-Nov-23 14:12:12

Quite agree Whitewavemark.

joannapiano Thu 23-Nov-23 14:10:50

Three of my grand daughters play rugby. I think our family would really worry if they had a trans player on the opposing team.

Iam64 Thu 23-Nov-23 14:03:31

We are whitewave - where cricket lead let’s hoe football follows _ not to mention rugby

Smileless2012 Thu 23-Nov-23 14:01:59

We certainly are Whitewavemarksmile.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 23-Nov-23 13:54:15

I see that the cricket league have stated that anyone who has gone through puberty as a male should never be allowed to play sport as a woman, as they have a clear and unfair advantage.

I think that we decided that on GN ages ago.

Ahead of the curve us😀😀

It’s so obvious to ordinary folk isn’t it. Yet this individual talks about suing for discrimination. I wonder how the young woman whose knee was badly injured by this individual is and whether she can sue
Ludicrous

RosiesMaw Thu 23-Nov-23 10:44:09

If she's built like a man with the strength and physique (and weight) of a man - with all respect to the gender she "identifies" with, she should not be playing with and against women
Would you want your daughter or adolescent granddaughter facing a tackle by a man ? I don't think so.

The sweet FA again. Teams will include a transgender player because it gives them an advantage over other teams. A few years back my ladies team played against a team with a transgender goal keeper. They were on hormone treatment but had not transitioned until post puberty. They were huge with giant hands and a gruff voice. My players were terrified and didn’t want to go anywhere near goal where they could be physically challenged. Even worse if the transitioning person is an outfield player. This was allowed by the FA so we had to accept it but it always seemed wrong to me. It’s a shame for the trans person but not fair on other players some of whom may be as young as 16.

There are LGBTQ+ football teams but are more recreational.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 23-Nov-23 10:05:53

Women’s sports for women, no ifs or buts.

henetha Thu 23-Nov-23 09:52:52

Nothing personal against Francesca, but it is just wrong to play sport against women. Unequal strength. It's not fair.

maddyone Thu 23-Nov-23 09:33:54

The sheer audacity of these trans people who actually claim they’re the ones being discriminated against!
