So pleased to see hostages being released.

GN hasn't had much to say in the last few days, perhaps like me you have been holding your breath and hoping to see hostages being released and aid flowing into Gaza. I am not religious so I can't pray but I am hoping that this release of hostages continues and this breathing space gives an opportunity for a long term peace plan to evolve.

foxie48 if what you say had been done I hope the world would have remembered the innocent of Israel too

Israel is also the only country designated as an apartheid state. It’s also the only country being taken to the UN court charged with genocide by South Africa a country which can recognise an apartheid state when it sees one.

Anniebach Tue 02-Jan-24 15:55:42

A country which has suffered persecution for centuries

Yes of course, in the same way that it is to be hoped that the children of both countries are remembered now.

Fleurpepper Tue 02-Jan-24 16:07:13

No-one denies that, at all.

Many Jews are disgusted and appalled and in fact VERY SCARED for the future- that the dreadful, inhumane, abominable events on the 30s and 40s - are being misused massively to commit genocide on another people. The balance of power is changing in the world. The USA and the UK are supporting and aiding Israel for now. Most of the rest of the world is NOT. And Israel will forever be surrounded by them and the memory of what is happening now will remain forever. Making Israel at hugely increased risk, and Jews all over the world- especially those that openly support Netanyahu and the IDF.

I know some of you can't, or won't see that- I can assure you this is very real. And Jewish friends who oppose Netanyahu and the abhorrent and inhumane treatment of Gaza and West Bank citizens, including children, babies, whole families- even more so.

I never thought I'd read on EF that children in the UK who feel they should not wear their Jewish school blazers- somehow deserve more compassion than the children and babies being bombed in Gaza. It's just sickening to read.

Anniebach Tue 02-Jan-24 16:16:42

I did not say that fleurpepper I spoke of the children afraid to
wear their school blazers , it was on the news as I was reading GN, I said no more . Do copy and post what you claim was said, I didn’t read it

I think Israel would have been remembered for changing it's tactics and perhaps the awful loss of life on 7/10 would have a better legacy than the loss of innocent lives in Gaza. Who knows, I certainly don't but if you keep doing the same thing, you keep getting the same results.

Where on earth did I mention your name? I cannot even remember who it was and on which of the many threads on the subject of what is happening in Gaza. I mentionned the rise of Islamophobia (after a mention of the rise of antisemitism and the fact school children fear wearing their Jewish school uniform in UK) - and I asked again- about the rise of Islamophobia and the bombing of children in Gaza - and someone replied 'no sympathy'- and I was truly shocked and sickened. Still am.

maddyone Tue 02-Jan-24 17:34:11

I’m so saddened to read all this, some posters who have never set foot in Palestine, Gaza, or Israel but seem to know the answers. Philippa who lives in Israel and experiences the difficulties in Israel roundly dismissed. She knows little apparently, but information coming from who knows where, Twitter, X, the world’s press (they have no bias have they?) and even the much discredited UN and Red Cross, is believed!

What should Israel have done? Annie asked the question, and eventually some replies, but certainly not any that were totally serious. foxie gave the most viable answer probably.

What should the UK have done in 1939? Going by some comments on here, the answer is not a lot except secure our borders.

As for every country in the world except the USA and UK, condemning Israel, what about every country in the world condemning Putin and Russia for their incursion into a sovereign country and slaughtering it’s innocent children, and executing its menfolk, and raping its women, and it’s targeting of the civilian population and bombing it’s hospitals, schools, private homes, and infrastructure. Condemnation of Israel is loud and passionate, condemnation of Russia, not so much.

Antisemitism rose here as soon as Israel was attacked, children
attending Jewish faith schools take their school blazers off when traveling

No-one is denying that.

Are you denying the rise in islamphobic attacks?

The reasons I am sure:
- I live here and personally know MANY people directly involved who report on what they see
- The Israeli press is radically free and mostly quite against Netanyahu so they report all and everything that is negative in the Israeli actions - absolutely no restrictions (except many sensitive time bound military information)
- When Israel makes mistakes - they immediately own up to them very transparently

Thank you for your posts, Philippa; it's very interesting to hear from someone who actually lives there.

Do keep posting, don't be put off.

growstuff Tue 02-Jan-24 17:53:19

No, I did not dismiss Philippa! However, I doubt if she has details of what goes on inside Israeli police stations or prisons, just as I don't know what happens in UK prisons. All I can do is read about conditions in the media - and who knows how truthful they are?

What I actually wrote is that I don't know. Why should I believe a random person on GN any more than Haaretz (an Israeli newspaper) and Amnesty International?

Foxie's answer was perfectly serious and is more or less what some of the most serious and knowledgeable commentators are advocating. Terrorism has rarely been beaten by military force and it won't be this time. Every single Hamas fighter could be killed, but the ideology will survive and even more generations will grow up with hate. The underlying causes for the attacks need to be addressed.

The Germans weren't terrorists, so 1939 is irrelevant. After the war, the allies did not leave Germany flattened, not did they radicalise millions of Germans, thus storing up problems for the future. Israel needs the co-operation of its neighbours, if it's ever going to be safe.

I disagree with you about Russia. Sanctions were imposed very soon after the attacks on Ukraine started.

No, they don't. The standard response is that they don't have any information and need to investigate.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 02-Jan-24 18:11:03

SKY is reporting that Israel (IDF) have killed the deputy leader of Hamas Saleh al-Arouri in Beirut.

Netanyahu's corruption charges relate to bribes paid to secure positive press/news coverage. That doesn't seem like a free press willing to criticise Netanyahu.

Iam64 Tue 02-Jan-24 19:12:40

Anniebach please don’t be silenced by Fleurpepper SHOUTING at you. Your comments about Jewish school children are valid. I don’t live in Switzerland, I live in north Manchester. My home town has a large Muslim community, largely of Pakistani origin, we have a number of Muslim schools. A few miles away is the area with the largest Jewish population outside London. There is no evidence of an increase in Islamophobia in my town, or any of the other northern mill towns with similar population, for that I’m thankful. My town avoided the race riots and we drove the EDL back to their buses when they came to stir hatred.

It’s different down the road, my Jewish friends are anxious, the synagogues and schools under threat. Anti semitism ever present.

Phillipa60, thanks for posting. Please don’t disappear

I agree Annie.
Whitewashing history.
Berlin was flattened by the Allies in 1945.
Other cities the same. Dresden, Hamburg, and others. It’s easy to find photographs online.

OK everyone, I live here and am definitely not a Netanyahu supporter, but I'm going to bow out now and defer to others' knowledge from sources like Wikipedia!
All the best and I will stick to family / grandparenting issues from now on (I did wonder if it was a good idea to weigh in on the conflict...!)
Best to all, and wishing for PEACE!

We are ALL back seat drivers on here philippa60
You aren't, and as such your observations are more relevant.
I do hope/wish you could find a way to report your observations without entering into a bun fight with those who wish to do so?
It would be so useful.

Obviously Philippa can see what's happening in Israel and she has my sympathies, but I doubt if she's done a tour of Israeli prison cells and police stations, where Palestinians are held.

I doubt she has done a tour etc.
Sorry, but this statement is just illogical.
