It's my favourite Christmas song. I suppose he was pretty hard living. RIP

so many good songs, dirty old town, the irish rover, reminds me very much of smog-filled liverpool and the Irish who lived there and those with whom I went to school and made my young life so much fun with the craic and parties and country rambles

TerriBull Thu 30-Nov-23 13:22:16

Sorry to hear of his death, RIP Shane

Fairytale of New York is absolutely my favourite Christmas song. And although it’s a great recording, Kirsty McColl and Shane MacGowan actually recorded their individual parts separately and only sang together in live performances.
Quite appropriately SMacG was born on Christmas Day. Drunk and/or drugged and slurred, or sober and articulate, he was always entertaining anytime I heard him interviewed. Many in the music business consider/ed him a brilliant lyricist. FoNY never made it to No.1 in the UK but has reappeared in the charts practically every year since it was first released.
R.I.P. Shane MacGowan

I wish his wife hadn’t posted that last photograph she took of him in his hospital bed. In my opinion, his final days would be kinder kept private for his family and friends.

Kandinsky Thu 30-Nov-23 14:36:12

He did well to make it to 65 with the life he led.
Good band the Pogues.

Doodledog Thu 30-Nov-23 14:41:05

There is a very good documentary about him on iPlayer, called Crock Of Gold. There was a lot more to Shane McGowan than Fairytale of New York. He was very talented and had an interesting life.

Kandinsky Thu 30-Nov-23 14:46:03

He was actually very good looking in his youth & ( if I’m not mistaken ) was a model for a while.

Yes I thought so too Urmstongran it was very sad.

The Pogues were an amazing band. Their music linked traditional Irish with rock and punk. It's a small miracle Shane lasted as long as he did. In his own words from A Rainy Night in Soho.
Some of them fell into heaven
Some of them fell into hell
RIP Shane your music lives on.

I also love ‘You’re The One’, the soundtrack from ‘Circle Of Friends’. Shane duets with Maire Brennan. Not sure if he wrote it, but a lovely song.

Lovely tribute on the news this lunchtime. ❤️

It was Seán Cannon (Dubliners). He sounded so genuine he said "his passing made me sad" - he spoke of his "poetic genius" and that his work was traditional but still brand new.

I think he was a genuinely nice person. Seán C said he "never said a bad word about anyone"

Can't say that about most people...l

Like him or not, there's something compelling about his voice. And his Fairytale in New York is my favourite Christmas song.

glammanana Thu 30-Nov-23 18:54:17

Was such a legend

Bella23 Thu 30-Nov-23 19:18:44

It was my favourite Christmas song as well.
To think he was under the influence of drink or drugs when he wrote his poetry or songs. His wife said some lovely things about him and at times he must have been hard to live with.
Another troubled intelligent creative soul. RIP

Louella12 Thu 30-Nov-23 19:31:23

Certainly wasn't my favourite Christmas song.

But sad to hear that he's gone.
