Cultural Heritage

The UN is inviting countries to add tangible or intangible examples of our cultural heritage to a list they are compiling.

So we can add examples like Pantomime, Morris dancing, folk lore etc.

I think that I would add English literature -

As the cream is a butter substitute it must go on first, then the jam. For those that say jam first then cream is easier, when did 'easier' become the yardstick for doing it 'right' grin Devonshire family roots.

No - butter, jam and then cream

I couldn't possibly comment on the heresy of putting butter on first grin Should we continue on whether it's a scone to rhyme with cone, or a scone to rhyme with gone? 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Humour
Irony
Music
Literature
The Proms - what other country has such a long annual festival with a very wide range of music

Black cabs and red buses

Absolutely.

In London - but why does England (and indeed the U.K.) have to be so London-centric?

Other colours are available.

Fair isle knitting isn't.

Sorry, you're right Maizie.

How about fair isle knitting?

maddyone Sun 24-Dec-23 12:54:52

As for pigeon racing. Why can’t a strong working class tradition be included as part of our culture?

It can.

MaizieD Sun 24-Dec-23 12:27:51

The things I mentioned are world famous English events and part of our cultural heritage.

I don't think that growstuff's* list are 'events' either...

And while football and fishing may be world wide they are still part of our culture. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised t find that the spread of football world wide had it's origins in being introduced to many countries by the Brits when they were part of the British Empire...

MaizieD Such a very middle class, 'doing the season8 list (which I think it was criticised for on the other thread. How about football, fishing and pigeon racing? Do they get a look in?
The things I mentioned are world famous English events and part of our cultural heritage. Football has its own category because football events are never ending, and the other two are not events. Fishing has been carried out in every country in the world since the beginning of time!

Herdwick sheep, definitely. Castles, saying sorry when you are not the one at fault, lovely dry humour and quick witty repartees. Squirrels , and foxes, all over the place. The green fields that are small and enclosed. Cream first for me but most here have jam first. Love of animals, especially dogs.

I’m Cornish - so jam first.

I lived in Devon for years, have Devonian family but we're jam first as well 🙂

If this is to be a class discussion what about our popular period dramas and the royal family being our biggest tourist draw!
Then ofcourse, weirdly, Benny Hill was incredibly popular in Sweden. 🤣

Grantanow Sun 24-Dec-23 09:56:13

A silly diversion for the UN from their lack of competence in dealing with wars, etc.

maddyone Sun 24-Dec-23 09:45:18

such a very middle class……..list

Why is that a problem?
Aren’t middle class people British too?

The OP was a request for examples of our cultural heritage, and I think we discussed what makes us English on another thread. I added some very English events like Chelsea Flower Show, Ascot, The Boat Race, Wimbledon Tennis, Henley Regatta, The Grand National, and more.

Then there's our musical heritage, famous 20th century popular music, The Beatles, The Stones, The Kinks, and more. And literature, Shakespeare, Dickens and so on.

The first steam train was invented in Wales in 1804. Quite an achievement, along with several other inventions.

Really, there are so many. As a country we have always punched well above our weight, probably due to our cold wet weather. We don't lie around sleeping all day, we keep busy inventing things, writing books, music etc.

Perfect summary!

Has anybody added

Queuing
Talking about the weather
And
Mustn’t grumble?
