My big political wish (well one of them) for 2024

After the next election there will be massive political reform, that sweeps away the corruption, cronyism and undemocratic practices that have bedevilled our politics during, in particular, the past few years.

The shameful use of the the honours system must disappear and along with it the House of Lords as it stands and the introduction of a democratic second chamber.

Let's be fair, siope. He is delivering something for the British people.

Lengthening hospital waiting lists, polluted watercourses and beaches, crumbling public services, poverty...

It's just that a great many British people don't want what he's delivering...

That the incoming Labour government will comprise honest and diligent Ministers and MPs in the mould of Clem Attlee, Ernest Bevin and others of yesteryear and achieve at least three terms like Tony Blair with his three rock solid majorities.

Siope

Less than one week into the new year, and already I never want to hear 'delivering for the British people' again.

I am so with you on this.

And, it's the way that politicians mouth this platitude - with a feigned look of seriousness, meant to convince us I'm sure that they respect the opinion of "the British people".

It's clichéd, patronising and insincere. The "British people" are very divided, economically, socially and politically - and the majority did not vote for this government.

My wish is that the next government - whichever it is- acknowledges the fact that we are now more divided than ever before, looks at the causes of the division, and attempts to, at least, start to reconcile them.

There will never be a "one nation" party - there will never be one nation, but we did at least function at one time in a more integrated way, when we had politicians who were more competent, statesman-like, and not quite so obviously self-serving, egotistical, and devious.

Or if they were, there wasn’t the internet available to make it clear exactly how much that applied.

I would like to see the UK transformed into a democracy - where a government could only be elected with the support of a majority of those who voted at the general election.

The UK is one of only two uindemocratic countries in Europe. The only other country which uses First Past The Post to elect its government is Belarus.

At the last general election Boris Johnson's Conservative Party won a "landslide" majority of 80 seats on the basis of only. 43.6% of thew votes. 56.4% of those who voted were opposed to them. They were able to do exactly what they wanted for up to five years - and what did we get - a lurch to the right amid chaos, gross incompetence and corruption.

We need electoral reform. An overwhelming majority of delegates at the last Labour Party conference voted for a change to PR. Yet Keir Starmer says "it's not a priority".

The way to show him that it certainly is a priority is to vote Liberal Democrat in as many seats as possible.

Proportional representation is truly democratic. It does often lead to coalition governments which are better able to plan long term as they have majority support.

Not only the Liberal Democrats, I don't think. I believe the Green party want PR as well. I am most likely going to vote for them.

Please vote for the Green Party if they are the best placed to defeat the Tories in your constituency.

Otherwise please vote LibDem or Labour, whichever is the strongest in your area.

Our top priority must be to defeat the corrupt self-serving Conservatives

What we need is for people to vote, not sit at home and waste their votes or use excuses for not voting.

It’s no good complaining which party gets in, or doesn’t, or whether the outcome of a referendum is right or not if you didn’t vote.
Brexit happened because over 1,000,000 more people turned out to vote leave than those who voted to remain.
We’ll never know if all those who didn’t vote would have voted remain or leave.

I would never vote lib dem but certainly now I would br waiting for clearer information on Ed Davey and the post office issue.

varian Fri 05-Jan-24 19:12:47

It is astonishing how many people who previously said they would never vote LibDem actually do when they are presented with the choice of a good LibDem candidate and yet another useless Tory.

We had a by-election here last year and our constituency changed from having a Tory MP with a 19 thousand majority to a LibDem MP with an 11 thousand majority.

The Tories will never win in my area.
That is why I feel free to vote Green.
if it was otherwise I would vote as you suggest.
