Seems Prince George will be attending Eton after all, same as his father and Uncle Harry.

Apparently Catherine favoured her alma mater, Marlborough 50 miles away - a co-ed establishment. Did you know there are over 100 boys at Eton paying no fees? I didn’t. They're not all "elite". Many are very normal, others are very rich. It's a complete mix. They are all clever though. I hope he can keep up.

Digging below the surface I hope Eton has firmed up on its safeguarding policies. A couple of serious incidents.
And of course it paid out £45k in damages to the young art teacher who successfully sued the school for wrongful dismissal in 2005 over Harry’s A level. With accusations of bullying etc.
It does seem to me that Prince Harry has not been able to overcome early life traumas and I do wonder if Eton is possibly not the best nurturing environment?
Of course let’s hope Prince George flourishes.

Princess Anne’s two children went to Gordonstoun

Urmstongran Sat 06-Jan-24 16:33:21

I’d forgotten that Anniebach!

ronib Sat 06-Jan-24 16:53:03

Gordonstoun also had safeguarding issues in the 1990s paying out £500k to two abused former students.

I said it Joseann because you posted about exceptions being made to students who aren't very bright and the OP says Many are normal, others are rich.

Prince George is a 10 year old child with a title and has been born into a wealthy family. I find it rather distasteful TBH, to see comments that appear to be questioning a child's intellect and suggest that he may not be 'normal' because the family he's been born into are Royal and therefore wealthy.

Sparklefizz Sat 06-Jan-24 17:27:21

Perhaps Prince George has been included in the decision ... but I am not sure if a choice has definitely been made.

sodapop Sat 06-Jan-24 17:33:17

I agree Smileless distasteful to assume Prince Geiorge was neither normal ( whatever that means) or intelligent because of his family.

eazybee Sat 06-Jan-24 17:37:35

I agree with you, Smileless.

And can you imagine the time royal children would be given by some of the brightest and best at the local state school?

An MP's children are given a hard time by those at their local state school, and I am talking about the younger teachers.

Grandma70s Sat 06-Jan-24 17:39:02

I’m disappointed. I hoped he’d go to Marlborough so that Charlotte could go too.

When my son was looking for a school for my grandson, I jokingly suggested Eton. He said that it was very difficult to get into now. I’m sure they ‘adjust’ their entrance requirements for princes, if necessary.

At least he’s not being shipped off to Gordonstoun!

Yes, it’s a great pity Charles didn’t go to Eton instead of that Spartan nightmare place Philip insisted on sending him to.

Smileless2012 Sat 06-Jan-24 17:46:32

I wonder how you would feel Grandma if your GS was admitted to Eton and it was suggested that their entrance requirements had been 'adjusted' to make that possible?

We don't know about how intelligent Prince George is, because as I said earlier:
We don't know his scores, and probably no one ever will.
What I mean is, that is all irrelevant anyway in the selection procedure because he is PRINCE George. But I added he also seems to me normal, ie unremarkable too, just in case that was questionable. Certainly no distaste meant, sorry if it came across like that.
I assume the OP meant "normal" in terms of money, that it could be anyone's grandson there as MerylStreep high-lighted in her example. ??
I agree with you that George will have been included in the decision making. One of the first questions asked in the Year 6 interview is, what do you feel this school can offer you, and what will you bring to the school?

Anniebach Sat 06-Jan-24 18:02:29

It will always be the same for George, admittance to a school, exam results, university entrance, all questioned

ronib Sat 06-Jan-24 18:07:27

Anniebach I don’t remember anyone questioning Prince William when he turned up at St Andrews. What a lovely university. So lovely that Kate apparently changed her first choice from Edinburgh…. So rumour has it.

My cousin has taught and still teaches at a Private big name school.
He said a large majority of pupils are on some kind of Bursary.

Does Prince George have to pass the allegedly difficult Common Entrance paper? Is Marlborough therefore an insurance option? Or perhaps mitigating circumstances can be considered if Prince George doesn’t quite pass?

Harry isn't the brightest button in the box and got in! I suppose it is possible that security would be better/easier at Eton.

ronib Sat 06-Jan-24 18:20:22

My children did a rowing course at Eton and it really didn’t seem that physically secure. They quite enjoyed the course and it kept them exercised for the week!

Calendargirl Sat 06-Jan-24 18:21:47

Eton seemed to suit William, which must have helped in the decision process.

Harry not so well. After reading ‘Spare’, I think Harry would have flourished at Gordonstaun, unlike his own father. Probably would have been better for the brothers to go to different schools.

Hindsight a wonderful thing of course.

George Osborne?

Osborne went to St Pauls

SORES Sat 06-Jan-24 19:07:43

Logistically and pragmatically Eton is the best choice,
in close proximity, walking distance to the Castle, cycling distance to his current Windsor home, his contemporaries will be poshos like him, possibly from his primary school, a little too egalatarian at Marlborough and an increased security risk.
Plus at Eton no distracting girls.
Will George attend this year? will he move at age 13 ?
He is exactly the ‘type’ of young man Eton expects, with
no hint that he is below par academically.

ronib Sat 06-Jan-24 19:09:49

Chardy yes I am mistaken but still another product of a single sex school. To my mind so last century.
One of my friends also went to St Paul’s and he is the best oddball ever…

ronib Sat 06-Jan-24 19:10:45

SORES distracting girls? What?

SORES distracting girls? What?

I went to a single sex school and imo they are far better for girls because teenage boys can be quite nasty bullies if they think a girl is cleverer than them, even in this day and age.
We had no problem with friendly relationships outside school hours and I don't think any of us are odd 😁
(Although you might think so, ronib)

ronib Sat 06-Jan-24 19:15:05

SORES Prince G went to a preparatory school not primary btw.

Joseann Sat 06-Jan-24 19:15:34

Sores
George can't go to Eton this year because he isn't old enough yet. The age is 13 - 18 years. He has another 2 years to complete at his prep school.
It's all speculation anyway, because there has been no official announcement yet to my knowledge.
