Seems Prince George will be attending Eton after all, same as his father and Uncle Harry.

Apparently Catherine favoured her alma mater, Marlborough 50 miles away - a co-ed establishment. Did you know there are over 100 boys at Eton paying no fees? I didn’t. They're not all "elite". Many are very normal, others are very rich. It's a complete mix. They are all clever though. I hope he can keep up.

Does Prince George have to pass the allegedly difficult Common Entrance paper? Is Marlborough therefore an insurance option? Or perhaps mitigating circumstances can be considered if Prince George doesn’t quite pass?

Eaton is very close to a Windsor Castle,

Joseann Sat 06-Jan-24 15:03:22

Yes, Urmstongran, I believe around 20% of the boys at Eton receive financial help. The school, like most stuffy independents, has moved on enormously in the last 25 years. It's unlikely they would accept less than extremely bright children, but Prince George might be the exception, thanks to his title!

Also Eton has history in helping members of the RF through Art A level. But not sure if it was really that wise?

Witzend Sat 06-Jan-24 15:15:12

It’s not unusual for independent schools to have pupils on bursaries. Dh and his brothers all attended a very academic London day school, which AFAIk since its beginnings a few centuries ago has always had pupils on bursaries.

I dare say George has a good chance of passing his common entrance. I’ve certainly heard it said that intelligence descends largely via the mother, and Kate did (presumably) make it to St Andrews on her own merits - you don’t get into St Andrews after scraping a couple of Es at A level.

Smileless2012 Sat 06-Jan-24 15:16:40

I don't think that being rich necessarily precludes you from being normal.

ronib Sat 06-Jan-24 15:16:57

Kate did very well AAB I think. But she was highly motivated….

Joseann Sat 06-Jan-24 15:17:03

grin
I doubt whether Art was the only subject that had a bit of extra exam "help". The trouble us, Eton couldn't exactly boot that pupil out after GCSEs.

Joseann Sat 06-Jan-24 15:19:17

In addition to the exams, there is also the important interview which can decide the outcome.

Kittycat Sat 06-Jan-24 15:21:03

What’s “normal”?

They took William and Harry.

Joseann poor Mr Burke head of art …. Lovely chap though!

Smileless2012 Sat 06-Jan-24 15:29:30

Oh dear, poor Prince George.

It's unlikely they would accept less than extremely bright children, but Prince George might be the exception, thanks to his title!.

He may also, as well as being titled be extremely bright and normal.

Joseann Sat 06-Jan-24 15:32:24

They do take the odd (!!) few who are well connected. I'd like to find a Head Master who would turn down the son of the future King of England!

Excellent, Smileless

ronib Sat 06-Jan-24 15:38:11

Boris Johnson went there.

Joseann Sat 06-Jan-24 15:39:31

Just wondering why you say, Oh dear, poor Princes George. Smileless? Prince George seems pretty normal to me (as far as he can be). What we don't have is access to his test scores, and those I know who have gone there, (since 2010), have, without exception, been exceptionally high achievers.

Callistemon21 Sat 06-Jan-24 15:44:39

ronib

Boris Johnson went there.

And so did thousands of other boys, the lovely Bill Turnbull for one.

ronib Sat 06-Jan-24 15:47:59

George Osborne?

SusieB50 Sat 06-Jan-24 15:50:43

I would have liked to have seen him attend a day school and not a boarding school. Maybe he will as Eton is near Windsor 🤞. Unless essential (armed services families and similar ) I think boarding children is never a good life experience. I have several cousins who boarded and not one had sent their own children away to school.

One of the ordinands where I worked had been a scholarship boy at Eton. He was in the same year as Lord Frederick Windsor who I understand was also incredibly bright.

MerylStreep Sat 06-Jan-24 15:57:11

A friend of my Grandson won a scholarship to Eton.

Urmstongran Sat 06-Jan-24 16:06:14

Eton isn’t a day school. Boarders only.

Ladyleftfieldlover Sat 06-Jan-24 16:13:00

At least he’s not being shipped off to Gordonstoun!
