People obviously remember what the US was like under Trump, before Biden destroyed it.

I am beginning to feel very uncomfortable for Urmstongran with the pile on of other posters all because she has differing views.

It’s difficult to empathise with a woman who is so vocal in her support of a misogynistic rapist.

Me too. I’m not a Trump supporter but some comment’s need challenging.

I think Urms is more than capable of holding her own grin that's not what worries me. It's a strategy that has proven time and time again to be counter productive.

MaizieD Fri 19-Jan-24 10:27:04

I think it's very odd to start a thread about a person who one must be aware that most people have a strong emotional distaste for. It's not as though Trump hasn't been extensively discussed in the past, the very recent past, indeed.

It feels like deliberate provocation.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 19-Jan-24 10:30:20

The exclamation mark in the thread title came across to me as provocative and goading.

Gundy Fri 19-Jan-24 16:23:32

US reader chiming in… There is so much to read here, I’m halfway through.

It is exhausting living here right now because of our politics. Good Lord, it may get worse before the election is over. People and parties are dug in like never before.

But the world is recognizing that one individual is off-the-rails and increasingly becoming worse, more of a raging lunatic, dragging his followers like lemmings to the cliff.

Voters are not stupid, but some voters cling to conspiracies and party loyalty (just because they were raised that way - OR - married into it). I wish they STOP and THINK what another Trump presidency would mean‼️

Trump does not really care about you, the devotees - he only wants your money to build his racist dictatorship on day one.

He is an out-of-control sociopath ready to tear everything and everyone down.
We all know how Jonestown ended.

I am a former Republican and cannot stop this lunacy.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 19-Jan-24 16:25:33

Thank you Gundy.

Not at all. The Iowa result prompted my discussion is all. The exclamation mark was to show surprise - such a huge win was certainly not expected.

Ug is in a small minority of pro-Trump GNetters and I am sure she knows this.

Unfortunately hardly any of the sensible GNetters who have pointed out how disastrous it would be, not only for the USA, but for the whole world, if Trump were to be re-elected, -actually have a vote.,

Urmstongran Fri 19-Jan-24 19:21:00

Ah well, it’s up to American voters to decide what they want in November.

Over & out on this topic now from me.

Thanks everyone for contributing!

DrWatson Fri 19-Jan-24 20:38:00

For UrmstonGran -- "such a huge win was not expected"?? Why write on a topic that you know so little about? For a couple of weeks before that Iowa caucus, the news reps from BBC, ITV and C4 (possibly Sky too) had all been reporting the local polls which had Trump so far ahead that everyone else had been spending their money (well, really that of gullible supporters) for nothing.

And so it proved. The Republican party (GOP for short) is in a complete mess re Trump, their saner folk know this, but can do little about it, as his fans are so gullible that they still lap up his assorted lies and blustering.

An ACTUAL election - against presumably lameduck Biden - will be a different matter, as the Dems election machine will highlight how well the economy is really doing, and topics like Trump's support for reducing Abortion rights (even criminalising it!) which have eroded some of his support from female voters. Plus of course, his various legal issues may well have caused him more serious problems by then (we can all hope), and there's that little matter of the attempted Revolution at the Capitol to remind voters about all over again. All it takes is a percentage point or two of voters to leave him in the 6 or 7 key states.

Callistemon21 Fri 19-Jan-24 20:57:34

DrWatson

For Nanna8, Biden has got the Stock Market at incredible levels, the economy is fine again, unemployment is way down.
Under your hero Chump, who promised to help the 'American workers' (as if he'd know what one of them is), his activities actually made things WORSE in a number of industries, I recall a news show talking to several union leaders (the 2020 campaign), and they were all disappointed that Chump had actually let them down.

Given that, what was it, 5 people DIED in that attempted revolution at the Capitol, with Chump egging them on, if you support that sexist, bigoted fraud, you too have blood on your hands.

Where has nanna8 said she is a Trump supporter, DrWatson?
She said:
I think he has a real chance. Don’t underestimate his appeal and realise that whilst he would have zero chance in the UK or most other countries, the US is different

She lives in Australia but recognises that the USA is not like the rest of the world, especially in a political sense.

Good posts DrWatson. Would the Trump supporters on here care to return and tell us whether they have had second thoughts?

No, they're not good posts.

They are complete misinterpretations of what some posters are saying which is that the USA is a different country and that yes, unbelievable as it may be to some of us, Trump could win.

MaizieD Fri 19-Jan-24 21:25:13

I would disagree with nanna8's belief that Trump would have zero chance in the UK, though. Boris Johnson got elected, didn't he?

How can anyone vote for this dreadful man i really despair! He should be in jail. Same as those in this country who “loved” Johnson.

Totally in agreement

Sharp intake of breath!!

Actually, I don't think so.
He's too odd even for the British.
The USA is a foreign country; they do things differently there.

The difference between Johnson and Trump is that I think Johnson had the intelligence to recognise when the game was up, though he played it as long as he thought he could get away with it.

There were burblings about 'witch-hunts', etc, but I don't believe Johnson would actually have encouraged physical violence... would he?

I don’t need to justify anything that I say on this forum. I live in the States. I will be voting. Will any of you?

I certainly will be voting.

Why do you say that? It wasn’t as great a victory as it looks. Only 14% of registered Republican voters turned out to caucus, and slightly more than half of those voted for Trump, so that’s about 7% of actual Iowan Republicans. Iowa is a pretty rural state and ought to be fertile territory for Trump. It will be more interesting to see how he does in New Hampshire.

Please anyone explain why any person wound vote for that moronic idiot!

Today’s politics plays out against a backdrop of uncertainties that include wars in Ukraine and Gaza with little prospect of exit strategies in sight; the continued cost of living crisis; energy, food and water insecurity; migration; and so on. Above all, the impact of the climate crisis.

The answer to this uncertainty, according to rightwing populists, is to blame everything on outsiders. Remove migrants and all problems will be solved – and all uncertainties eradicated. True or false, the message is simple and clear.

In conveying this message, it is important to instil in the public an exaggerated fear of the impact of migration, so their message will give people a false sense of certainty. What if there are no outsiders? Then create one. Use the culture war to label the “experts” (judges, scholars, etc.) as the enemy of the people.

For populists to thrive, society needs to be divided so that people can feel certain about where they belong – and so that those on the opposing side of the argument can be ignored.

The problem, of course, is that there are rarely simple solutions to complex issues.

Thanks for your support Call. I am certainly not a Trump supporter. Come on, I have said that many times but I can’t be bothered arguing with people who are the type that make people want to actually support the Ginger One by their rude and ignorant comments. They are another reason he has so much support really. I do think he has a good chance though. I think he will win, given his opposition, unless they get another democratic leader. Please.
Just as an aside, there is a ginger Tom here who terrorises our little cats and we call him Donald. Strange for a Trump supporter.

Reading that trump is not attracting the better educated or the middle class suburban American. I would also hazard a guess that he will have trouble with the women’s vote.

Gundy Sat 20-Jan-24 09:04:25

I think this election will depend on women turning out to vote - Suburban Women specifically - to protect their constitutional rights.

We also have another factor that is dividing our country - the Supreme Court - currently laden with conservative judges who are coming under increased scrutiny. These are lifetime appointments. That Right There Is Wrong and needs to be reevaluated. The world is changing, no need to have archaic life-long appointments.

Nine months left till US election. A lot can still change with current candidates - both old buggers - who need to move aside. There is one particular 54 yr old Democrat from Minnesota who is emerging as an opponent to Biden. Keep your eye on Dean Phillips.

The ONLY reason Trump is running (and hoping for a win) is so he can pardon himself and avoid prison.

I am from Iowa but it’s not where I live.

I'm glad you said that, Gundy. When I said it I was told it wasn't possible. Perhaps it needed an American to say it ...
