People obviously remember what the US was like under Trump, before Biden destroyed it.

I was watching a programme on BBC4 last night about New York at a time when they were waiting apprehensively about the result of the last election. They were so relieved when Biden won. I can’t imagine how worried they are now. I still can’t believe it’s happening.

Thanks Dickens. I wonder if those words make Urms and others supporting him here think twice?

I'm afraid you're just exemplifying the triumph of hope over experience, GSM. All this has been known for the past 8 years but their support has never wavered.

If the people who are voting for him, and admire Farage, Johnson and the far-right, are voting because they give easy, clear lines answers, as recent research suggests, when will they see it for what it is? I've heard people in tears now the realise the consequences, but more the lack of change for them after Brexit, but others still keep there heads firmly in the sand.

I know, Maizie, I know …

We were travelling around the USA (4 states) in the run up to the 2016 elections.

DH always manages to get into conversations with barmen, hotel staff and other guests. We were amazed at how particularly in Florida Mr Trump was revered in a God like way, whilst in New York he was a figure of hate and ridicule.

I am still amazed that in a land of approximately 331.9 million people (2021) that Mr. Biden and Mr. Trump are all they can come up with for Presidential candidates…

I’m late to the party (I’ve only just spotted this thread) but I have to echo GrannyGravy because I am also amazed that the Americans can only find Trump and Biden as Presidential candidates.

Siope Tue 23-Jan-24 12:27:30

But they are not the only two. There are still two Republicans competing, three Democrats (including Biden) and, to date, three independent/third party candidates.

I think it's because you have to be very rich, or able to attract enormous amounts of money, to rise up through the political hierarchy, let alone to run your presidential campaign campaigns.

I'm still amazed that Obama managed it.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 23-Jan-24 13:09:07

It’s why DeSantis withdrew.

A quick Google reveals there is one other republican female I think her name is Niki Haley who is behind Mr. Trump in the polls.

There are two other Democratic candidates Ms. Williamson and Mr. Phillips neither of which seem to be attracting much air time

I am not sure that third party Independent candidates stand much chance of winning.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 23-Jan-24 13:11:58

Agreed MaizieD it seems that the money favours these two, are they hoping they can pull their strings ?

TanaMa Tue 23-Jan-24 14:05:36

Difficult time for Voters in USA - no real options have materialised to challenge Trump or Biden. So far all my friends in America are backing Trump "to get them out of the mess Biden has caused". Think we will also have a problem when our next GE arrives, especially as our last two PMs were not elected by the public!!

MaizieD Tue 23-Jan-24 14:18:33

I'm at a loss to understand what 'mess' Biden has caused. His economic policy has been very successful in a country wedded to neo-liberal monetarist theory...

Donald Trump Cannot Be Removed Because He Is 'God's Choice,' Claims Pastor Who Says the 'Courts of Heaven' Elected Him

(the link is to "Newsweek")

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 23-Jan-24 14:41:00

I too would like to know what the ‘mess’ is, Maizie. I don’t think our US posters have given any indication of it.

Dickens, if the courts of heaven have elected him perhaps God would like to have him upstairs running things?

ronib Tue 23-Jan-24 14:44:11

GSM downstairs surely?

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 23-Jan-24 14:51:42

Well, the pastor said he was God’s choice but I agree, downstairs would suit him far better.

I am hoping that it will be ordered that his Criminal Charges will mean Trump can't stand but I am also concerned that such a decision would mean Civil War. He really is such a divisive person. It is beyond me how anybody can listen to him and think he is sane. At least Boris had a bit of charming veneer. Trump is just a childish bore.

Urmstongran Wed 24-Jan-24 09:45:50

I see Trump took New Hampshire. Surprised?

I am not all surprised.

Urmstongran Wed 24-Jan-24 10:14:57

Me neither GG13 👋

The will of the people speaks. A leader who connects with the electorate and is not scared to make a decision and do things for the good of the people. Listen up Tories.

Freya5 Wed 24-Jan-24 10:33:19

Haley has lost out to Trump in New Hampshire. Oh dear.

ronib Wed 24-Jan-24 10:35:39

Urmstongran not so sure the will of the people applies! More like the will of the mass media machine which Trump controls so well.
Poor USA if Trump really is your will though. How did you sink so low?

Won't all the states have times to vote?
