People obviously remember what the US was like under Trump, before Biden destroyed it.

Apparently his vocabulary is that of an eight year old.

That good eh?

That's idealistic, that's wonderful, that's a beautiful thing.
It's nice.
We love winners. We love winners. Winners are winners.

Just what the world needs!

Trump is a serial loser.

In spite of inherited wealth, he bankrupted many businesses.

In 2016 he got 3 million fewer votes than Hillary Clinton.

In 2020 he got 7 million fewer votes than Jo Biden.

Trump is a proven LOSER.

varian those quotes are Trumpisms.

Why does he tell his followers they need to make America great again? Didn’t he make it great when he was president?

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 22-Jan-24 18:14:04

That doesn’t surprise me.

You coukdnt make it up coukd you. Each time I see him his expression is that of a petulant child, and when he opens his mouth he sounds like one.

Trump once observed that his IQ was higher than Obama's and GW Bush's. He talked about it a fair bit at one time (his IQ). To be fair to him, it was probably because his IQ had been called into question in some quarters.

He believed also that his quotient was higher than our Alan Sugar's (I'm no fan of Lord Sugar, but I would question Trump's assumption on that). And so the comparison's continued. Without him ever indicating his own IQ score.

But, as someone pointed out...

"If you take someone we consider to be a genius like Einstein, he would probably not do well on an IQ test, because he thinks outside the box".

"He could probably think of a dozen answers to one question."

So it's all a bit of a nonsense. I think maybe what many of us on here are looking for in politicians and leaders - especially world leaders, is maturity - that quiet calm wisdom that, allegedly, comes with age.

Trump appears to be permanently on the defensive, not so much like a child but very much like a petulant teenager who hates being challenged or questioned about his behaviour, regarding it as an attack, rather than a quest for information.

What worries me about him is that he comes across as a man whose emotional intelligence has been arrested. He can't manage his emotions, nor understand or respond to the emotions of others (unless they agree with him). In the vacuum, his ego has rooted itself firmly and it appears to be this huge ego that is in constant need of stroking that seems to govern what he thinks, says and does.

In short, I fear the world will be far less stable if he becomes POTUS with all its associated powers because we will become dependent on the replica of a tetchy and fractious teenager.

But - he inspires enormous admiration and confidence in others, so...

I do question why women hold him in such esteem though. Any mature male who, when talking about the opposite sex, incorporates "pussy" as part of his lexicon, immediately alerts little red flags in my brain. But, reactions may vary.

MaizieD

Sorry, DaisyAnneReturns, but posters have been addressing you as DAR for ages and you've never objected to it before.

Interesting point Maizie. Obviously it would have been better to comment when it originally happened. I find it takes courage to speak out when a group sees their etiquette as the only acceptable set of norms governing that groups behaviour. I think (and have been told) that as my health has improved over the last 10 years, so has my confidence.

Obviously, that does not excuse me not speaking out earlier, but it may explain the timing.

Ron DeSantis Governor of Florida has suspended his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination.

Looks like Donald Trump has a free pass for the nomination now.

😒😒

I know it is somewhat off topic but can you name one good head of state/ PM/President these days? I can’t. There are one or two politicians that are ok but the bosses- no. I used to like Angela Merkel but she’s gone.

I daresay Volodymyr Zelenskyy would qualify. Some, I'm sure, would say the Pope (not sure he does much actual Head of State work though(.

Some others, off the top of my head:

Katerina Sakellaropoulou - I think it's mark of how well regarded she is that Mitsotakis nominated her, despite their political positions being so different
Gudni Thorlacius Johannesson - who continues, I believe to have approval ratings of over 95% and, I guess, Katrin Jakobsdottir (also evidence of how well-led coalition governments can lead to stability)
Petr Pavel
Mette Frederiksen
Sandra Mason and Mia Mottley - providing a blueprint for independence from the Commonwealth
Sauli Niinistö (navigating a very tricky situation with some nous and effectiveness)

Probably Michael Higgins and Leo Varadkar: they seemed to be playing a blinder internationally, until the current Israel-Palestine situation, but I don't know enough to be sure that this is the case domestically.

Bit early to tell about Charles III (although I disapprove of hereditary heads of state in general)

I'd have liked to include Gabriel Boric, and given time I think I will be able to, but he's struggling presently.

There are more...

He’s done and said so many awful or stupid things I lose track of them. My partner said before he became president last time he just wanted to create a dynasty for his family. I’ve also remembered he said if Ivanka wasn’t his daughter he’d be dating her. It isn’t as if half of this stuff was just rumours because it’s on record. And yet his supporters still worship him

I think Angela Merkl was a steady hand and is missed by many Germans. Even those who might be a different political persuasion. They all called her Mutti which is mother in German.

She wouldn’t have advised the German people to drink bleach to protect them against covid…how can anyone take that man seriously?

Easybee prison is a distinct possibility for Netanyahu too which is why he’s clinging by his fingertips to his political life.
What does that say about today’s
Politics in far too many countries.

I agree. It also isn’t, sadly, his best interest to find a solution to the war.

Aveline Sun 21-Jan-24 12:32:45

Couple of Good articles in the Observer today.

The first was looking at the rise of the very far right/fascism in Europe, and then the next at Trump and that he is setting the pace for the rise of fascism.

I can’t do links, but if you have access the articles are on page 26-27.

Very succinct comment from an American involved in politics: about Trump running again:
" Very simple; if he doesn't run for president he will go to jail."
