The vote on the call for ceasefire in Gaza

I have never seen such a bloody shambles ever!!

I read that the BBC has a journalist broadcasting next week from Gaza -so presumably they are expecting a ceasefire to be in place?

I do hope that Biden is correct in his expectation - he, at least is better placed than most to know what is happening in the talks.

Did anyone see the BBC report from the west bank following a shepherdess and her flock of sheep? She has made a home in a cave with the sheep, because settlers keep trashing her house and killing her sheep. We saw footage of settlers shooting a Palestinian in the stomach - they all seemed armed to the teeth and are behaving dreadfully. The settler who shot the Palestinian in the stomach was found guilty and had his gun taken away as punishment😮😮.

This is what needs to be sorted out. The settlers need to be taken back to Israel, and leave Palestine to the Palestinians.

A two state solution.

SKY is reporting that Qatar have released a statement saying that a ceasefire is nowhere near at the moment.

maddyone Tue 27-Feb-24 11:40:06

Oh, conflicting reports then. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Today the world is giving terrorism legitimacy.

Today the world is giving terrorism legitimacy.

If we hadn’t done that with Ireland there would never have been peace there. Sometimes terrorism is the result of people not having a voice. Or, if they do have a voice that voice is ignored,

Today the world is giving terrorism legitimacy.

Nelson Mandela was branded a terrorist by the U.K.

You have to be much less closed minded when dealing with a peace process.

There were Jewish groups in Palestine branded as terrorist by the British government during the twentieth century.

The world must deal with groups of people that many find distasteful because the alternative is unbearable.

You have no idea of what your alternative will lead to. It may be unbearable too.

Andrew Mitchell seems to echoing Biden - it is all looking much more hopeful.

🤞 for the poor people in Rafah

It may just be me but when Joe Biden was asked about the progress of the proposed ceasefire he could have been stood somewhere more suitable than an ice cream parlour holding an ice cream cornet.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 28-Feb-24 06:22:40

I read that Biden has comfortably won the latest primary but tens of thousands voted “not committed” as a protest at what is happening in Gaza. The message is getting through.

People will not tolerate genocide.

Galaxy Wed 28-Feb-24 06:25:02

The American public will more than likely vote for trump at the election. What message will that be sending.

maddyone Wed 28-Feb-24 06:54:39

Who knows what will happen if Trump gets in. I’m afraid for what may happen.

The Deal (guardian) good and bad in parts

follows:

Ceasefire: Both sides would stop all military operations. Israel would move its troops away from densely populated areas and halt drone surveillance for eight hours every day.

Hostage release: Hamas would release 40 Israeli hostages. Those set to be released include women, children and young adults under 19 years of age, people over 50 and the sick. Men of military age would not be covered in this deal.

Prisoner release: In return, Israel would release 400 prisoners, in a ratio of 10 for every freed hostage. This is a much higher ratio than under the last ceasefire deal, when three prisoners were released for every freed hostage.

Aid and reconstruction: Israel would allow 500 trucks a day of humanitarian aid into Gaza, along with 200,000 tents and 60,000 caravans to house the displaced.

Fuel and equipment to rebuild hospitals and bakeries would be allowed into Gaza and Hamas would promise not to use this to threaten Isreal.

Despite signs both sides may be open to compromise, officials from Israel, Hamas and Qatar – a key intermediary in talks – said significant differences remained and a deal was still a long way off.

A Hamas official said Biden’s comments were “premature” and did not reflect the situation on the ground, Reuters reported. An Israeli website, Ynet, quoted senior Israeli officials saying they did not understand why Biden seemed so confident about the deal.

Qatar’s foreign ministry spokesperson on Tuesday said there had been no breakthrough, as Israel and Hamas could not reach agreement on the main issues, though he added the country was “upbeat and optimistic” about mediation prospects.

Democrats may register their feelings at the primaries but they won't vote for Trump. He agreed to Jerusalem being Israel's capital. We should all fear Trump being President again, the man is without morals and like Netanyahu is focused on himself not his country.

maddyone Wed 28-Feb-24 10:10:52

I’m not sure that Israel will go for only forty hostages being released opposed to four hundred prisoners.

maddyone Wed 28-Feb-24 10:11:10

But we will see.

JacquiG Wed 28-Feb-24 10:13:12

Quite right. People get tired of being terrorised and eventually fight back. Palestinians have been terrorised since their land was designated the new Israel by the League of Nations, by gangs such as Stern, Irgunn, Lehi, and others. It's worth reading the history, which shocked me, so currently reading more about it. There is a book by President Carter which I've started reading called 'Peace for Palestine' I think. Very measured so far and a good history as the preface. At the start he thinks the setup is wonderful, and reading on, he's seeing flaws. Good articles too in The Journal of Conflict. It needs to stop. This repeated carnage must not go on.

This! I agree. I also pray for a complete ceasefire and release of all hostages. 🙏🙏

The last hostage release ratio was 1 - 3 (one hostage for every three prisoners)

maddyone Wed 28-Feb-24 10:59:18

If forty hostages can be released it rather suggests that they know where they are contrary to some suggestions on Gransnet that they can’t be released because they’ll no longer know where they are.

Doubtful isn’t it?
Sounds like no nearer a solution just yet.

The armed wing of Palestinian militant group Hamas on Wednesday said it launched two missile salvos consisting of 40 Grad missiles from southern Lebanon into northern Israel.

Al-Qassam Brigades said in a statement on its Telegram channel it had bombed the headquarters of the 769th Eastern Brigade and the airport barracks in Beit Hilal.

No ceasefire then.
