Having been mildly unwell the past few days, I dozed off on the sofa during the debate. I am grateful to Whitewavemark for starting this thread and explaining what I had missed.

Hoyle’s voice when he returned to the Chamber was breaking with emotion. I am certain that he was genuinely sorry for what had happened and I hope there will be some solution to this injustice to the SNP members.

It is obvious that most, I hope all, MPs who were taking part in the debate wanted one thing only, to stop the slaughter of innocents along with the guilty in Gaza, while in no way weakening the total condemnation of Hamas leaders for the slaughter of innocent Israeli families and young festival goers.

I am deeply hurt that anyone should use a thread on this subject to condemn a group of our fellow citizens. The call from the vast majority of Muslim and others on the demonstrations is not for ‘jihad’ but for justice, peace and an end to this unbearable suffering.

The whole bunch looking like toddlers - we all want a ceasefire but we want our call for a ceasefire. Tories not even voting for their own amendment. Complete farce. Joke is - what country cares what the U.K. says? It won’t make a jot of difference to the people of Gaza.

I like thoughtful, tolerant people. Of all stripes and faiths. Or none (like me). I have friends who are Muslim (I live in Manchester a place of great diversity, not a little hideaway village) and we get along well. What I do not like is this bear garden mentality on our streets every weekend. Flag waving and hurling (screaming) abuse. The UK is a fair and tolerant society and I am proud to be part of it but if I’m honest? I fear for our future. Our borders are so porous to be laughable. Not every incomer has our best interests at heart. The Manchester bomber proved that at the Ariana Grande concert where 22 people lost their lives attending a concert. Literally just up the road from where I live. So yes, I see the dangers that lie ahead if we don’t nip all this in the bud.

Yes I’d hate this to degenerate into a division between two of the worlds big faiths.

We should be bigger than that, and give mature consideration to the arguments.

Had Starmer simply listened to his party MPs and either permitted a free vote or actually put the Labour party vote behind the SNP motion we would have sent a humanitarian message to the world.

The speaker may be weak and too easily influenced, but if a party leader has exerted unnecessary pressure on the speaker he has behaved unacceptably.

I think this highlights Starmer's lack of confidence. It wouldn't have threatened his position if he had permitted a free vote. Matters of conscience are permitted free votes, and this is largely one of those. Sadly he seems to think he must control everything.

I can't see either Netanyahu nor Hamas reading about the world demanding ceasefire will have any affect on them whatsoever.

So no one should speak up and condemn the slaughter of innocent civilians?

My oh dear is for all the gesture politics that we have now. As is clear the main protagonists in the Israel Gaza conflict will not be bound by the various motions the UK parliament chooses to pass. We are not their masters.

I didn’t watch it but saw some on the news. I agree Whitewave, it looked to be a complete shambles.

I don’t think Farage has got anything in do with it. He can say whatever he likes, on this issue he has no influence. Neither will our Parliament have any influence, whatever they vote for. Hamas is not listening. Netanyahu is not listening either.
