Interesting article in the Guardian this morning.
Labour MPs and activists say their campaign literature has too much emphasis on our national flag. Many ethnic minorities equate the flag with the far right, so it should not be shown as prominently .
Comments please.

I’m not a lover of flags of any description and can’t see the point of them - a bit of cloth with a pattern on - but according to some on here that means I should go and live somewhere else.

I wonder do you equally disapprove of the pro Palestine marchers carrying the Palestine flag? Or the abundance of Ukrainian flags that surfaced shortly after the Russian invasion?
What about Pride flags etc? Do you object to those being flown everywhere?

I have a relative who has recently taken citizenship of their country of residence. Having voluntarily moved there that relative respects their adopted country, its flag and customs, and has sworn allegiance to it. That's how it should be.

Nobody has to love or see the point of a flag, but to immigrate to a country then say you find their flag or other factors offensive does seem rather odd. Having said that I've not met any immigrant in my very diverse London borough who has expressed such an opinion!

I have these shoes, bought with true patriotism in mind for the late Queen's Jubilee in 2012. To me they symbolise this wonderful great country that we live in.

I love them . They’re gorgeous!

I understand some people see flags as symbolic, but they to me they are pointless, can do more harm than good. That goes for all bits of coloured cloth waving. Does that mean I have to live somewhere else?

For many years if I’ve seen a Union Jack in someone’s garden my immediate reaction has been ‘BNP supporter’. And I’m usually right. So it doesn’t surprise me if ethnic minorities think the same. I do feel we need to reclaim the flag in a nicer way but not sure how that can be done.

My neighbour has a flag pole. He flies all sorts of flags on it.
Definitely not a BNP supporter.

It's about time we put a stop to all this denigration of our country. This is still the United Kingdom and that union is represented by the union flag. We must stop bending the knee to immigrants. Rather, we should encourage them to embrace all things British (or return to their own countries).

I know the people in my village and the ones that fly Union Jacks are the ones that go on about ‘ foreigners’. I can’t speak for other places.

During the referendum quite a few flag poles with the Union Jack suddenly appeared in people's gardens. All sending a clear message. As a Swede it made me feel uncomfortable.

Really why is that. Do you not fly flags in your home country. I see a Swedish flag, flying in Lincolnshire, along with a Welsh dragon. People showing were they come from. This is of course the United Kingdom, flags are allowed, even banned terrorist ones, now that makes me extremely uncomfortable, because the police did not even try to remove them.

Flag flying in Sweden is usual…

Why?

Greta Sun 31-Mar-24 09:06:13

The flags appeared during the referendum and the message to me, maddyone, said "vote leave". A political message and therefore inappropriate use of the flag.

Galaxy Sun 31-Mar-24 09:18:06

I currently have the flag of Ukraine as a car sticker. I suppose I am making a political point.

And there were a lot of signs saying ‘ give us our country back’ at the time, too. At the time I was in an area where there were lots of tourists and I felt very ashamed.

Galaxy Sun 31-Mar-24 09:25:52

So is my Ukraine flag ok? Is it just political views that you dont agree with?

lixy Sun 31-Mar-24 09:26:58

I hope the whole UK will fly the Union flag to show support for the Olympic team in the Summer.

Walking around my local area yesterday I saw Ukrainian, St George's, Irish, Italian and Papal flags as well as one with a huge spotted Easter egg on it!

maddyone Sun 31-Mar-24 09:39:59

Surely people can have political views we don’t agree with. I don’t want to live in a country where only ‘acceptable’ views can be aired.
I have never owned or flown a flag. I have never put a political poster in my window, although that used to be seen a lot around election times.
I think it quite dangerous when people say that a flag or symbol they don’t agree with should not be shown. It seems intolerant to me.
Live and let live.

I’m not a lover of flags - any flags. Although, if England are doing well in any major football tournament, I do put one out lol 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Wiki states:

“ There are no symbols representing Wales in the flag, making Wales the only home nation with no direct representation, as at the time of the Laws in Wales Acts 1535 and 1542 (creating legal union with England) the concept of national flags was in its infancy.”

We can paint a little dragon in the middle, Anniebach
Or fly both 🙂
I might hoist three 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🇦🇺🇬🇧

I agree with others, we should be proud to wave our flag for events like the Olympics, World cups but I don't think politicians should be appropriating them for their own partisan reasons.

Still annoyed at this woman, just when I was beginning to think she might be a future leader.

Anniebach Sun 31-Mar-24 10:35:15
