Well good morning to you on this beautiful Easter weekend
I am just back from France and their national flag is everywhere.
Do they get a reprieve because of the Auld Alliance paddyann ?

France wasn't exactly innocent in days gone by but they don't get the flack for flying their flag the way we do. How sad that patriotism and its symbols are denigrated by those in our Union.

Yes, other European countries had empires and certainly didn’t behave any better than we did - do they still beat themselves up about it?

The flags appeared during the referendum and the message to me, maddyone, said "vote leave". A political message and therefore inappropriate use of the flag.

I think what Greta was saying, Freya is how she felt about the flying of the union flag at the time of the referendum. As you have no access to her inmost thoughts I suggest that you take what she says at face value. Seeking to invalidate it by calling it a 'remainer trope' won't work, I'm afraid.

We have a flag pole.. They are very common in our part of the world.
DH puts up light hearted flags as well as the Union flag, Saltire, including a Pirate flag plus a Gin pennant, depending on the mood, never has it been or suggests its political.

Whatever has happened to tolerance for the views of others?
I don’t fly a flag, never even owned one.
Do those little paper flags you used to buy at the seaside and stick in your sand castle count? I did have some of those.
It’s all a storm in a teacup. Or a sand castle.

There's a Union Jack on the Bramley apples I'm about to peel which tells me instantly that they were grown here in the UK.

They also surprised me because during all the years I had lived and worked here nobody had suggested it was time for me to pack my bag. Could you just accept that Freya?

I do like to see the flag on foodstuffs because it lets me know I’m supporting our economy by buying British goods.

Greta those people were simply rude. Sadly some people are rude. I think it’s best to ignore them. Nonetheless I think to dislike our flag because of those experiences is sad.

Greta, I am so sorry that you were made to feel unwelcome during the referendum. Can I just say as a "Vote Leave" person, it was never about other europeans being unwelcome or anybody else for that matter. My best friend was German and had lived her for 25 years, my niece is married to a German, another friend is Dutch, etc, etc. In my naivety I believed that whoever had made their home here would be given an automatic right to stay and their circumstances would not change. My vote was entirely centred around the cumbersome bureaucracy in having 28 countries who had to agree policy and the missing money in the accounts. Everybody I know who voted the same way because their thoughts aligned to mine and certainly didn't have a "foreigner go home," agenda. The people with that agenda are ignorant and I don't agree they should be ignored, there should have been a way of educating them because I don't think there was enough of that within the Remain Campaign in so many ways which meant the average person was unaware of what they were voting for!

Thank you, icanhandthemback. I certainly do not dislike the Union Jack. On our Christmas tree we have never had a star or an angel what we have is a mini Swedish flag. Next to it is a mini Union Jack. Standing together.

My local butcher in Conwy - farmer’s son and his Firecracker sausages are to die for ….along with all the other produce in his shop, all locally sourced.

Did you say you are Swedish? Not in the EU are they?
The people in the UK opted to leave the EU, a political and economic group, they didn’t opt to leave the continent of Europe.
Fail to see why you felt anyone wanted you to leave.

I buy British wherever possible, we need to support our own growers, but I love Italian produce.
