Aged 76y.

Prostate cancer apparently.

Norah Thu 11-Apr-24 16:20:58

O.J. Simpson, the former football great who was accused of and ultimately acquitted of the brutal 1994 slayings of his ex-wife and her friend, has succumbed to his battle with cancer.

Ahh I didn’t realise he was that old I suppose the memory of him is stuck in that ‘year of intrigue’
If it was a wrongful sentence that was awful I remember the gloves he was supposed to have worn in the murder wouldn’t even go on his hands
He was always much loved before that terrible day

RosiesMaw Thu 11-Apr-24 16:28:34

You reckon he was framed? Innocent?

Smileless2012 Thu 11-Apr-24 16:31:52

I think there was an attempt to secure a conviction with a degree of framing but I think he was guilty, and attempts to frame him got him acquitted.

welbeck Thu 11-Apr-24 16:32:08

didn't a civil court award damages against him for unlawful deaths.
let's think of his 2 children, they'll have to cope with it all being turned over again, and more, now that people can't be sued.

I was hooked on the case, the first to be seen live in the UK, and watched most of the trial - it was fascinating .

Smileless2012 Thu 11-Apr-24 16:34:36

Yes that's right welbeck it was his wife's family I think that took it to court and won.

Grandmabatty Thu 11-Apr-24 16:35:47

Wasn't there a police car chase live on TV? I seem to remember that.

Georgesgran Thu 11-Apr-24 16:40:04

Robert Kardashian was his lawyer.

DiamondLily Thu 11-Apr-24 16:42:53

Oh dear, how sad, never mind.

Norah Thu 11-Apr-24 16:46:34

I believe the criminal trial ended in acquittal, civil trial convicted.

My brother litigating in America, interesting cases.

Iam64 Thu 11-Apr-24 16:46:55

Although Mr Simpson was found not guilty in the criminal trial, the Goldman and Brown families in 1997 won a 33.5 million dollar civil judgement against him from a jury that ruled he was liable for the murders. (Washington post)

Nicole’s journals recorded 60 different incidents of alleged bearings

the civil court found in favour of the plaintiffs, and awarded damages accordingly.
convictions only take place in criminal courts.

Galaxy Thu 11-Apr-24 16:55:36

I am thinking of Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman today.

BlueBelle Thu 11-Apr-24 16:58:41

Yes there was a car chase I remember too
I think it was iffy and I guess only he really knew what happened that day I think he served about ten years instead of life
One of these things that we ll never know I suppose

welbeck Thu 11-Apr-24 17:00:15

time served was for an unrelated matter.
some kind of poetic justice, maybe.

Sorry I used words improperly.

The result was as you say (awarded damages) though the total awarded damages have never been paid. The families of Brown and Goldman civil trial resulted in a reward of over $40 million in damages.

Oh well.

Too sad, too bad.

He was convicted for armed robbery and the kidnapping of two sport memorabilia dealers at gun point.

tickingbird Thu 11-Apr-24 17:30:43

Unbelievable that some on here seem to be sympathetic to this man. He may have got off but his wife’s throat was cut and her friend stabbed to death. He carried on to commit armed robbery and that’s why he served time in prison.

Like Galaxy I’m thinking of Nicole Brown and Ron Goodman and their families today.

Nightsky2 Thu 11-Apr-24 17:34:10

One of the worst injustices ever seen.

All seemed/seems quite unjust. Perhaps a broken legal system?
